Abstract The synthesis of a new biocompatible bichromophoric system (CURBO) was developed, by connecting the skeleton of the naturally occurring curcumin to a BODIPY derivative. The system exhibited an intense fluorescence band with maximum at about 510 nm in organic solvent, while its emission spectra in aqueous solution were more complicated and slightly red-shifted, due to the effect of aggregation for the poor solubility of the dyad. BODIPY–diketopyrrolopyrrole–porphyrin conjugate small molecules for use in bulk heterojunction solar cells

Two small molecules denoted as BD-pPor and BD-tPor composed of a central BODIPY core surrounded with two DPP and two porphyrin units have been designed and synthesized. In BD-pPor and BD-tPor, porphyrins are linked to the central BODIPY by phenyl and thiophene bridges, respectively. The optical and electrochemical properties were systematically investigated in order to employ them as donors along with PC71BM as an acceptor for solution processed bulk heterojunction organic solar cells. Abstract We have designed two new BODIPY derivatives, denoted as 6a and 6b, substituted with truxene moiety and triphenylamine (TPA) unit groups and have investigated their optical and electrochemical properties. Dyes 6a and 6b were employed as donor along with PC71BM or Y6 as acceptor for the fabrication of binary and ternary organic solar cells. We report the preparation of water-dispersible, ca. 30 nm-sized nanohybrids containing NaYF4:Er3+, Yb3+ up-conversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), capped with a polyethylene glycol (PEG) derivative and highly loaded with a singlet oxygen photosensitizer, specifically a diiodo-substituted Bodipy (IBDP). The photosensitizer, bearing a carboxylic group, was anchored to the UCNP surface and, at the same time, embedded in the PEG capping; the combined action of the UCNP surface and PEG facilitated the loading for an effective energy transfer and, additionally, avoided photosensitizer leaching from the nanohybrid (UCNP-IBDP@PEG). The (6-4) photolyases are blue-light-activated enzymes that selectively bind to DNA and initiate splitting of mutagenic thymine (6-4) thymine photoproducts (T(6-4)T-PP) via photoinduced electron transfer from flavin adenine dinucleotide anion (FADH(-)) to the lesion triggering repair. In the present work, the repair mechanism after the initial electron transfer and the effect of the protein/DNA environment are investigated theoretically by means of hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) simulations using X-ray structure of the enzyme-DNA complex. The in vivo use of optical imaging is still limited by the lack of near infrared emitting probes. This thesis work focuses on the optimization and valorization of a water-soluble fluorescent platform whose optical properties enable an in vivo use. Two distinct applications were investigated for this WazaBY (Water-soluble azaBODIPY) platform: use as a PET (or SPECT) / optical bimodal probe, and as a theranostic agent. Concerning the first project, we were able to develop a targetted SPECT/optical bimodal probe, which was radiometallated with indium 111. A modular synthesis of unsymmetrical BODIPY dyes based on a [6π]-electrocyclization to construct the two pyrrole rings is presented. The products carry four aryl moieties in positions 1, 3, 5, and 7 which can be freely selected as well as optional substitution in positions 2 and 8. The method employs acetophenones, benzaldehydes as well as glycine nitrile or glycine ethyl ester as the key building blocks.
