Anthropometric and pharmacotherapeutic variables on acute emesis induced by cisplatin-containing chemotherapy.
2000
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the effects of anthropometric and pharmacotherapeutic variables on acute emesis induced by cisplatin-containing regimens with dosages ·50 mg·m−2. METHODS: A prospective, cross-sectional, noncontrolled study was performed to analyze acute vomiting during the first 24 hours in patients treated in a Spanish hospital. The patients received an intravenous combination of drugs (2 doses of metoclopramide 3 mg/kg, dexamethasone 20 mg) as first-choice antiemetic therapy. Intravenous ondansetron 8 mg and dexamethasone 20 mg served as an alternative regimen in patients <30 years old with a history of extrapyramidal manifestations or emesis in previous cycles. Therapeutic …
Infanticide in the evolution of reproductive synchrony: effects on reproductive success.
2007
Synchronous breeding in animals and plants has stimulated both a theoretical and empirical examination of the possible benefits of active synchronization. The selective pressures of predation and infanticide are the strongest candidates proposed to explain the evolution of reproductive synchrony. Alternatively, breeding asynchronously with conspecifics may ensure a greater availability of resources per breeder. However, the possible fitness benefits resulting from active asynchronization have not yet received attention in evolutionary ecology. Here we present a hypothesis, based on a graphical model, illustrating the costs and benefits of the two modes of reproduction. We tested the hypothe…
A Research Agenda: The Changing Relationship Between Body Weight and Health in Aging
2008
It is increasingly recognized that changes in weight and body composition with age are strongly connected with health status and physical function. Aging is typically associated with reductions in total and lean mass, so that in the last few years of life, older people frequently report having lost weight and strength (1–3). We know only a few important facts about this process. On average, muscle mass declines with age, and even in older persons with stable weight, muscle is replaced by fat over time (4,5). Increasing fatty infiltration of muscle tissue is associated with decreasing muscle strength (6). The general pattern of weight change over the lifetime is that weight increases through…
Kinerja Sapi Bali Jantan yang diberikan pakan Rumput Gajah (Punnisetum purpureum) subtitusi fermentasi Jerami Padi
2018
The research was aimed to study Bali bulls fed with Pennisetum purpureum with fermented rice straws substitution in Manokwari Regency, West Papua was conducted experimentally with 12 Bali bulls that have average weight of 176.02±38.35 kg with 2 – 2,5 years old for 5 months duration. The study was designed using complete randomized design of nested pattern with 3 (three) treatments, 4 (four) replications and 4 (four) times weighing, with an assumption that Bali bulls are nested during weighing time. The results of this study showed that Penicetum purpureum substitution with fermented straws did not significant on Bali bulls body weight. The duration of fermented rice straws feeding that subs…
Associations Between the Modified Food Standard Agency Nutrient Profiling System Dietary Index and Cardiovascular Risk Factors in an Elderly Populati…
2022
Background: Helping consumers to improve the nutritional quality of their diet is a key public health action to prevent cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The modified version of the Food Standard Agency Nutrient Profiling System Dietary Index (FSAm- NPS DI) underpinning the Nutri-Score front-of-pack label has been used in public health strategies to address the deleterious consequences of poor diets. This study aimed to assess the association between the FSAm-NPS DI and some CVD risk factors including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, plasma glucose levels, triglyceride levels, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and diastolic and systolic b…

PARASITES AND SEXUAL REPRODUCTION IN PSYCHID MOTHS
2004
Persistence of sexual reproduction among coexisting asexual competitors has been a major paradox in evolutionary biology. The number of empirical studies is still very limited, as few systems with coexisting sexual and strictly asexual lineages have been found. We studied the ecological mechanisms behind the simultaneous coexistence of a sexually and an asexually reproducing closely related species of psychid moth in Central Finland between 1999 and 2001. The two species compete for the same resources and are often infected by the same hymenopteran parasitoids. They are extremely morphologically and behaviorally similar and can be separated only by their reproductive strategy (sexual vs. as…
Upper body strength endurance evaluation: A comparison between the handgrip strength and three body weight tests
2021
BACKGROUND: The hand-grip strength test has been widely adopted to evaluate upper limb strength. Other field based tests as push-ups and pull-ups are commonly used for the same purpose. It is however unclear if these may be used interchangeably for upper body strength evaluation. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate strength endurance of the upper body and understand which test could be the most appropriate for upper body evaluation. METHODS: Thirty-eight healthy young male participants were tested with three tests comprised of: 1) push-ups (PS), 2) pull-ups (PL) and 3) parallel dips (PD) performed to exhaustion. Grip strength (GS), total number of repetitions, time-…
Vitamin D status as a determinant of peak bone mass in young Finnish men.
2004
Severe vitamin D deficiency causes rickets, but scarce data are available about the extent to which vitamin D status determines the development of the peak bone mass in young adults. Our aim was to evaluate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency [serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) less than the lower limit of the reference range of 20–105 nmol/liter] and the relationship between vitamin D status and peak bone mass among young Finnish men. A cross-sectional study of determinants of peak bone mass with data on lifestyle factors collected retrospectively was performed in 220 young men, aged 18.3–20.6 yr. One hundred and seventy men were recruits of the Finnish Army, and 50 were men of similar …
Mediterranean diet and adiposity in children and adolescents: A systematic review
2021
Our aim was to summarize, through a systematic review, the current evidence from dietary intervention and observational studies on the impact of adherence to the Mediterranean diet on adiposity markers and obesity in children and adolescents. We searched Medline up to June 1, 2021 for the identification of intervention and observational studies meeting the inclusion criteria, following the PRISMA statement. We included 55 articles: 8 intervention studies and 47 observational studies. Three trials report a beneficial effect of the dietary intervention, whereas two did not, and three did not compare with a control. All observational studies were cross-sectional, and only five studies also inc…
