Evaluation of plankton communities in small highly humic bog lakes in Latvia

This paper reports the results of a study performed at the Teici State Reserve in Latvia The results indicated that algal communities in brown water lakes were formed by species that were tolerant to a low pH and high humic substance concentration. The composition of the species of phytoplankton and zooplankton was comparatively simple. A significant correlation was found between the number of species of phytoplankton, zooplankton, and the pH value. Similarly there was a clear relationship between the taxonomic composition of phytoplankton, zooplankton, and the trophic state of the lakes. Maģistra darbs uzrakstīts latviešu valodā uz 56 lapaspusēm. Tas satur 22 attēlus, 6 tabulas, 3 pielikumus, 81 atsauces uz literatūras avotiem. Darba mērķis bija novērtēt intensīvi pulsējošas gaismas un sildošo masku terapijas efektivitāti uz sausās acs sindroma ārstēšanu. Pētījumā piedalījās 12 dalībnieki ar sausās acs sindromu. Pētījumā tika pierādīts, ka pēc divām IPL procedūrām uzlabojās NIBUT (21 %), lipīdu slāņa biezums (68 %), samazinājās meiboma dziedzeru iztrūkums (31 %), radzenes krāsošanas pakāpe (85 %) un OSDI (34%). Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia mainly affecting the elderly population, which can lead to serious complications such as stroke, ischaemic attack and vascular dementia. These problems are caused by thrombi which mostly originate in the left atrial appendage (LAA), a small muscular sac protruding from left atrium. The abnormal heart rhythm associated with AF results in alterations in the heart muscle contractions and in some reshaping of the cardiac chambers. Thrombin generation may be a potential tool to improve risk stratification for cardiovascular diseases. The aim of this study was to explore the relation between thrombin generation and cardiovascular risk factors, cardiovascular diseases, and total mortality. For this study, 5,000 subjects from the population-based Gutenberg Health Study were analyzed in a highly standardized setting. Thrombin generation was assessed by the Calibrated Automated Thrombogram method at 1 and 5 pM tissue factor triggers in platelet-poor plasma. A total of 42 islet-cell tumors were examined between 1972 and 1984. Problems of localization were only encountered in 31 tumors less than 2 cm in diameter. Of 31 small tumors, 27 were correctly localized using a combined diagnostic approach: ultrasound was successful in 12/20 tumors, CT in 9/21, angiography in 20/31, intraarterial digital subtraction angiography in 1/2, and pancreatic venous sampling in 13/16. The smallest tumor found by ultrasound and CT was 7 mm in diameter. Intraoperative ultrasound demonstrated all 9 insulinomas examined. Under the auspices of the International Society for Neurovascular Disease (ISNVD), four expert panel committees were created from the ISNVD membership between 2011 and 2012 to determine and standardize noninvasive and invasive imaging protocols for detection of extracranial venous abnormalities indicative of chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI). The committees created working groups on color Doppler ultrasound (US), magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, catheter venography (CV), and intravascular US.
