Halogen bonding enhances nonlinear optical response in poled supramolecular polymers
2015
We demonstrate that halogen bonding strongly enhances the nonlinear optical response of poled supramolecular polymer systems. We compare three nonlinear optical chromophores with similar electronic structures but different bond-donating units, and show that both the type and the strength of the noncovalent interaction between the chromophores and the polymer matrix play their own distinctive roles in the optical nonlinearity of the systems. acceptedVersion Peer reviewed
Interactions in water-alcohol mixtures: Conductance of lithium picrate in solutions of water and isomeric pentanols at 25C
1982
Conductance measurements of lithium picrate in solutions of water in n-pentanol, 2-pentanol, 3-pentanol, 2-methyl-1-butanol and 3-methyl-1-butanol have been carried out at 25°C. Ionic association and conductance were found to change with water content and with the molecular structure of the alcohols (i.e. position of the OH group and degree of branching of the alkyl chain). These results indicate that both conductance and ion pair formation are not the consequence of the simple motion of ions in the electrical field as required by the continuum model. A more realistic approach, involving the internal structure of the solvent mixtures, has been considered.
Flexible Synthesis of Planar Chiral Azoninones and Optically Active Indolizidinones
2014
The flexible synthesis of defined substituted optically active indolizidinones starting from chiral pool (S)-proline and trans 4-hydroxy-(S)-proline is described. Several defined 2-vinylpyrrolidines were generated in short sequences. The aza-Claisen rearrangement using chloro and phenylketene equivalents delivered nine-membered-ring lactams with up to three stereogenic centres and pS-arranged E olefins. Depending on the substitution pattern, certain azoninones had a flexible conformation and showed pS/pR double-bond flipping. Treatment of the unsaturated lactams with the soft electrophile iodine induced diastereoselective transannular ring contractions. Here, the planar chiral arrangement o…

Thermoanalytical studies on an order-disorder transition resulting from supramolecular organization of hydrogen bond motifs in an unpolar (polymer-) matrix are reported. Functional groups having two potential sites for hydrogen bonding (4-carboxyphenylarazole) are located statistically along the polybutadiene backbone. Multistep hydrogen bond formation leads to the formation of association chains whose lengths can be controlled by addition of monofunctional groups (phenylurazole) like in conventional stepgrowth polymers. The association chain length is estimated from the variation of transition enthalpy and «melting» temperature
Switchable Supramolecular Crosslinking of Cyclodextrin-Modified Hyperbranched Polyethylenimine via Anthraquinone Dyes
2011
Two anthraquinone dyes, 5,8-di-N-adamantylamino-1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone (AQ-OH) and 1,4-di-N-adamantylaminoanthraquinone (AQ-H), are synthesized. The combination of AQ-OH and AQ-H with hyperbranched polyethylenimine (PEI) bearing covalently attached β-cyclodextrin spontaneously formed host–guest complexes with hydrodynamic diameters of about 260 nm. Even enlarged structures of the trifunctional AQ-H were observed via DLS. Repeated measurements show that their assembly and disassembly is reversible with a critical point at 26 °C and therefore switchable via temperature. Also superstructures up to 100 μm were detected via TEM, cryo-TEM-, and SEM. Hence, a smart colored network of switchabl…
Water-soluble hyperbranched polyglycerol photosensitizer for enhanced photodynamic therapy
2020
Porphyrin and its derivatives as promising photosensitizers have been widely utilized in photodynamic therapy (PDT). However, the water-solubility and biocompatibility of porphyrins are the typical bottlenecks in clinical PDT processes. Herein, we successfully fabricated a new type of water-soluble, hyperbranched polyglycerol photosensitizer through one-step esterification between water-soluble hyperbranched polyglycerol (hbPG) and fluorophenylporphyrin (FP). Compared with the linear control polymer, i.e., FP covalently connected with linear polyethylene glycol (LPEG), the hyperbranched structures bearing multiple porphyrin units generated more singlet oxygen and exhibited higher cytotoxici…
Homogeneous mixtures of polybetaines with low molecular weight salts
1996
The prepaparation of amorphous, homogeneous blends of zwitterionic polymers with various low molecular weight salts, and in particular with ionic dyes was studied. Homogeneous miscibility was achieved in many cases up to equimolar amounts of salt, even for bulky compounds. Whether miscibility is achieved, or not, depends in a subtle way on the chemical structure of the salt, but no obvious correlation between structure and miscibility could yet be revealed. Spectral shifts of the dye UV/Vis spectra in solution as well as in bulk suggest strong interactions between the polybetaines and the admired salts.
Recent Developments in Monte Carlo Simulations of Lattice Models for Polymer Systems
2008
A brief review is given of methodological advances made during the past decade with the Monte Carlo sampling of equilibrium properties of simple lattice models of polymer systems, and representative applications of these new algorithms are summarized. These algorithms include Wang−Landau (WL) sampling, the pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method (PERM), and topology violating dynamic Monte Carlo algorithms such as combinations of local moves, slithering snake moves, and “double bridging” moves for the bond fluctuation model. The applications mentioned concern phase-transition-like phenomena of single chains (collapse and crystallization in bad solvents; interplay of collapse and adsorption; escap…
Saccharide modified silica particles by enzymatic grafting
1997
The surface of silica particles has been chemically modified with oligo- or poly-(α,1→4)-D-glucopyranose (amylose) chains of various length by covalently attaching maltoheptaose derivatives to the solid support and enzymatic polymerization of glucose-1-phosphate with a potato phosphorylase as catalyst. The characterization of the products by solid-state NMR spectroscopy showed an interesting dependence of the linewidth with the grafting density of the glucan chains. The modified silica particles showed chiral discrimination in liquid chromatography.
Spectroscopic and structural characterization of pure and FeCl3-containing tri-n-butyl phosphate
2014
The spectroscopic properties and liquid structure of pure tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) and FeCl3/TBP solutions have been investigated by Uv–Vis and Raman spectroscopies, X-ray diffraction and conductometry. Uv–Vis and Raman spectra, supported by conductometric measurements, consistently indicate that the solubilized salt is present mostly as TBP n [FeCl3 − n ] n+ and FeCl4 − complex ions due to specific interaction with the TBP phosphate group. Thanks to this interaction, a high amount of salt (up to 13 % w/w) can be dissolved despite the relatively low dielectric constant of TBP. The X-ray diffractogram of pure TBP has been interpreted in terms of three main contributions which can be attri…
