BONE MINERAL DENSITY, FRAGILITY FRACTURES AND CLINICAL RISK FACTORS
2018
Osteoporosis affects the skeletal system and is characterized by a reduction in bone strength that predisposes one to an increased risk of fractures. In Italy, about 3.5 million women and 1 million men suffers from osteoporosis. These numbers are set to increase in the coming twenty years because the percentage of the Italian population over 65 will increase by 25%. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the general characteristics of a population of patients suffering from osteoporosis and the relation with comorbidity. A single site, open-label, investigator-initiated, retrospective trial was conducted at the Bone Metabolic Disease Clinic, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitat…
Effects of thalassemia major on bone mineral density in late adolescence
2003
Management of thalassemia major has shown substantial clinical and prognostic improvement, suggesting the need for major attention to quality of life. We studied bone health in 25 patients (13 males, 12 females; 15-23 years old) affected by β-thalassemia major. In all patients, bone mineral density (BMD), biochemical markers of bone and calcium metabolism (calcium, phosphate, magnesium, alkaline phosphatase, urinary calcium, 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25OH-D], 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2,D], parathyroid hormone [PTH]), hematological parameters and gonadal steroids status were assessed and related to each other and to auxological parameters (chronological, statural and bone ages, height, we…
Er supermosjonisme sunt? : kartlegging av helsevariabler blant mannlige langdistanseløpere og syklister.
2016
Masteroppgave folkehelsevitenskap - Universitetet i Agder 2016 Introduction: Physical activity is well documented as an important factor for good health. There are however some people who train far beyond the national recommendations for 6 physical activity combined with work and family life. The research done on «high volume exercisers» is limited, specially the health variables. Objective: The purpose with this master paper is to investigate if high volume exercise is healthy. By identifying different health variable it may point to how the body responds to high training volume. Method: 41 male high volume exercises (18 to 50 years) were included in this cross-sectional study. The compila…

Associated Factors and Liver Disease Severity for Decreased Bone Mineral Density in HIV Mono- and HIV/HCV Co-infected Patients
2015
Objective: We assessed the prevalence and risk factors of decreased bone mineral density (BMD) in patients mono-infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or co-infected with hepatitis C virus (HIV/HCV). We also evaluated whether bone loss was linked to lipid asset in both groups and to severity of liver fibrosis in the co-infected group. Methods: We consecutively enrolled 194 HIV-patients (129 mono-infected and 65 co-infected). All HIV-patients underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), while co-infected patients underwent transient elastography. Advanced liver fibrosis was defined as a median liver stiffness ≥ 9.5 kPa. Fibrosis was also assessed in all the HIV-patients using …
Response of Bone Metabolism Markers to Ice Swimming in Regular Practitioners
2021
Objective: Both exercise and cold exposure cause physiological stress and they often occur in combination. However, the effects of exercise during severe cold on variation in bone metabolism in humans have remained elusive. The aim of this study was to investigate the variations in circulating bone metabolism markers after ice swimming (IS).Methods: Eighty-seven women and men aged 42–84 years old were recruited to perform regular IS activities. Serum parathyroid hormone (PTH), total calcium (Ca2+), total phosphorus (Pi), total magnesium (Mg2+), N-terminal osteocalcin (N-MID), total propeptide of procollagen 1 (TPINP), and C-terminal telopeptide of type 1 collagen (β-CTX) were measured 30 mi…
Dairy calcium intake and lifestyle risk factors for bone loss in hiv-infected and uninfected mediterranean subjects
2012
Abstract Background Despite the reported high prevalence of osteoporosis in the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-population, there have been no previous studies examining dairy calcium intake and bone mineral density (BMD) in HIV-subjects. We assessed the prevalence of low BMD in HIV-infected and uninfected subjects and analyzed the effects of calcium intake, lifestyle and HIV-related risk factors on BMD. Methods One hundred and twelve HIV-infected subjects were consecutively enrolled. Seventy- six HIV-uninfected subjects matched for age and sex were enrolled as the control group. The HIV-subjects were interviewed about lifestyle habits and completed a weekly food-frequency questionnaire …
Decreased serum levels of sex steroids associated with osteoporosis in a group of Romanian male patients
2016
Abstract Introduction. With age, sex hormone deficiency leads to reduced bone mineral density (BMD) in men. The aim of our research is to analyze the role of serum sex steroids in assessing BMD in the men included in this study. Materials and methods. This cross-sectional study included 146 men aged 65-85 years old with osteopenia or osteoporosis (study group) and 121 men with normal BMD (control group). Serum levels of total testosterone (Tt) and free testosterone (Tf) were measured by immunoassay, and estradiol (E2) levels were measured by the immunoenzymatic method. Femoral neck and lumbar spine BMD was examined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Results. Tf and E2 deficiency was signi…
