Cajal–Retzius and subplate cells: transient cortical neurons and circuits with long-term impact

2020

Abstract The laminar and columnar organization of the mature cerebral cortex is determined by a variety of early developmental processes. Two distinct populations of early generated neurons play important roles in corticogenesis. Cajal–Retzius neurons, located in the marginal zone (later layer 1), control the formation of neocortical layers by releasing the extracellular matrix protein reelin, which serves as a guiding signal for migrating neurons. Subplate neurons in the lower neocortical layer play an active role in axonal pathfinding of thalamocortical connections and in transient synaptic circuits, influence early cortical plasticity and the maturation of the columnar architecture. Both…

Electrical activity patterns and the functional maturation of the neocortex

2011

At the earliest developmental stages, sensory neocortical areas in various species reveal distinct patterns of spontaneous neuronal network activity. These activity patterns either propagate over large neocortical areas or synchronize local neuronal ensembles. In vitro and in vivo experiments indicate that these spontaneous activity patterns are generated from neuronal networks in the cerebral cortex, in subcortical structures or in the sensory periphery (retina, cochlea, whiskers). At early stages spontaneous periphery-driven and also sensory evoked activity is relayed to the developing cerebral cortex via the thalamus and the neocortical subplate, which amplifies the afferent sensory inpu…

Nonlinear dynamical model of Costas loop and an approach to the analysis of its stability in the large

2015

The analysis of the stability and numerical simulation of Costas loop circuits for highfrequency signals is a challenging task. The problem lies in the fact that it is necessary to simultaneously observe very fast time scale of the input signals and slow time scale of phase difference between the input signals. To overcome this difficult situation it is possible, following the approach presented in the classical works of Gardner and Viterbi, to construct a mathematical model of Costas loop, in which only slow time change of signal's phases and frequencies is considered. Such a construction, in turn, requires the computation of phase detector characteristic, depending on the waveforms of the…

Lament for the loss of al-Andalus in two Zajal from Cútar

2012

This article edits, translates, comments and examines several aspects related with two strophic poems in Andalusian Arabic dialect. They are written in a miscellaneous volume recently found in Cútar (Málaga). Their contents speak about the hard moments lived during the last times of Muslim political power in the Iberian Peninsula. Mention is made to the copyist and the possible author of the poems.

Pintura califal de Bédar (Almería, 355/966)

2020

2002

The Morisco Jesuit P. Ignacio de Las Casas collaborated in the translation of some of the lead books found in Granada at the end of the 16th century. At first he was a partisan of their authenticity, but he rapidly became convinced that they were false. There followed a fierce struggle to make the Church prevent their publication. In the article his activity as a translator of these texts is reviewed, together with the arguments, which he used in order to criticise the doctrine contained in the lead books. In addition to noting the presence of Islamic elements, de Las Casas saw in them clear signs of ancient anti-trinitarian heresies. Although he does not consider them the work of Moriscos,…

Un asesinato en la Valldigna (Valencia, 1492)

2005

In 1492, a fatal robbery was committed in a small village in the Kingdom of Valencia. This article analyses the statements of the witnesses to a confession of this crime that were recorded in an Arabic document. The document provides evidence for the application of sharī'a law among Muslims in a territory that was no longer part of an Islamic state - in this case, the meting out of punishments for blood crimes. The survival of the document as part of the case file of the Christian court that adjudicated the case shows that the Valencian justice system considered valid documents produced by a Muslim judge, by a court clerk or by a notary. Moreover, these decisions were provided in Arabic wit…

ER stress in human hepatic cells treated with Efavirenz: Mitochondria again

2013

Background & Aims ER stress is associated with a growing number of liver diseases, including drug-induced hepatotoxicity. The non-nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitor Efavirenz, a cornerstone of the multidrug strategy employed to treat HIV1 infection, has been related to the development of various adverse events, including metabolic disturbances and hepatic toxicity, the mechanisms of which remain elusive. Recent evidence has pinpointed a specific mitochondrial effect of Efavirenz in human hepatic cells. This study assesses the induction of ER stress by Efavirenz in the same model and the implication of mitochondria in this process. Methods Primary human hepatocytes and Hep3B…
