Electromagnetic mass difference of pions at low temperature
1999
We compute low temperature corrections to the electromagnetic mass difference of pions in the chiral limit. The computation is done in a model independent way in the framework of chiral perturbation theory, using the background field method and the hard thermal loop approximation. We also generalize at low temperature the sum rule of Das et al. We find that the mass difference between the charged and neutral pions decreases at low temperature $T$ with respect to the T=0 value. This is so in spite of the fact that charged particles always get a thermal correction to their masses of order $\sim eT$, where $e$ is the gauge coupling constant. Our result can be understood as a consequence of the…
Global conservative and multipeakon conservative solutions for the modified camassa-holm system with coupling effects
2014
Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2014/606249 This paper investigates the continuation of solutions to the modified coupled two-component Camassa-Holm system after wave breaking. The underlying problem is rather challenging due to the mutual coupling effect between two components in the system. By introducing a novel transformation that makes use of a skillfully defined characteristic and a set of newly defined variables, the original system is converted into a Lagrangian equivalent system, from which the global conservative solution is obtained, which further allows for the e…
Towards gauge coupling unification in left-right symmetric SU(3)c×SU(3)L×SU(3)R×U(1)X theories
2017
We consider the possibility of gauge coupling unification within the simplest realizations of the $\mathrm{SU}(3{)}_{\mathrm{c}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\mathrm{SU}(3{)}_{\mathrm{L}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\mathrm{SU}(3{)}_{\mathrm{R}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\mathrm{U}(1{)}_{\mathrm{X}}$ gauge theory. We present a first exploration of the renormalization group equations governing the ``bottom-up'' evolution of the gauge couplings in a generic model with free normalization for the generators. Interestingly, we find that for a $\mathrm{SU}(3{)}_{\mathrm{c}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\mathrm{SU}(3{)}_{\mathrm{L}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\mathrm{SU}(…

Heavy-quark spin symmetry for charmed and strange baryon resonances
2013
We study charmed and strange odd-parity baryon resonances that are generated dynamically by a unitary baryon-meson coupled-channels model which incorporates heavy-quark spin symmetry. This is accomplished by extending the SU(3) Weinberg-Tomozawa chiral Lagrangian to SU(8) spin-flavor symmetry plus a suitable symmetry breaking. The model generates resonances with negative parity from the s-wave interaction of pseudoscalar and vector mesons with 1/2(+) and 3/2(+) baryons in all the isospin, spin, and strange sectors with one, two, and three charm units. Some of our results can be identified with experimental data from several facilities, such as the CLEO, Belle, or BaBar Collaborations, as we…
s-wave charmed baryon resonances from a coupled-channel approach with heavy quark symmetry
2009
We study charmed baryon resonances which are generated dynamically within a unitary meson-baryon coupled channel model that treats the heavy pseudoscalar and vector mesons on equal footing as required by heavy-quark symmetry. It is an extension of recent SU(4) models with t-channel vector meson exchanges to a SU(8) spin-flavor scheme, but differs considerably from the SU(4) approach in how the strong breaking of the flavor symmetry is implemented. Some of our dynamically generated states can be readily assigned to recently observed baryon resonances, while others do not have a straightforward identification and require the compilation of more data as well as an extension of the model to d-w…
Mechanical and structural characterizations of gamma- and alpha-alumina nanofibers
2015
Abstract We investigate the applicability of alumina nanofibers as a potential reinforcement material in ceramic matrix compounds by comparing the mechanical properties of individual nanofibers before and after annealing at 1400 °C. Mechanical testing is performed inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM), which enables observation in real time of the deformation and fracture of the fibers under loading, thereby providing a close-up inspection of the freshly fractured area in vacuum. Improvement of both the Young's modulus and the breaking strength for annealed nanofibers is demonstrated. Mechanical testing is supplemented with the structural characterization of the fibers before and afte…
Experimental evidence for pressure-driven isostructural and symmetry-breaking phase transitions on Bi14CrO24
2014
Abstract We performed in situ X-ray diffraction experiments on Bi 14 CrO 24 under pressure up to 17.4 GPa. We discovered two reversible phase transitions that take place at 7.3 and 12.1 GPa. The first transition is isostructural and the second-transition involves a tetragonal-monoclinic symmetry reduction. Both transitions involve a small volume collapse indicating that they have a first-order character. For the three observed phases we determined a P – V equation of state. All of them are highly compressible having bulk moduli that range from 64 to 70 GPa. We also determined the axial compressibilities for difference phases, being the response of the structures to pressure anisotropic. Thi…

Early asymmetric cues triggering the dorsal/ventral gene regulatory network of the sea urchin embryo
2014
Dorsal/ventral (DV) patterning of the sea urchin embryo relies on a ventrally-localized organizer expressing Nodal, a pivotal regulator of the DV gene regulatory network. However, the inceptive mechanisms imposing the symmetry-breaking are incompletely understood. In Paracentrotus lividus, the Hbox12 homeodomain-containing repressor is expressed by prospective dorsal cells, spatially facing and preceding the onset of nodal transcription. We report that Hbox12 misexpression provokes DV abnormalities, attenuating nodal and nodal-dependent transcription. Reciprocally, impairing hbox12 function disrupts DV polarity by allowing ectopic expression of nodal. Clonal loss-of-function, inflicted by b…
