Multidrug resistance (MDR), of the innate and acquired types, is one of major problems in treating tumor diseases with a good chance of success. In this review, we examine the key role of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) to induce MDR in three tumor models characterized precisely by innate or acquired MDR, in particular triple negative breast cancer (TNBC), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Solid lipid nanoparticles containing tamoxifen characterization and in vitro antitumoral activity.

Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) containing tamoxifen, a nons- teroidal antiestrogen used in breast cancer therapy, were prepared by microemulsion and precipitation techniques. Tamoxifen loaded SLNs seem to have dimensional properties useful for parenteral administration, and in vitro plasmatic drug release studies demon- strated that these systems are able to give a prolonged release of the drug in the intact form. Preliminary study of antiproliferative ac- tivity in vitro, carried out on MCF-7 cell line (human breast cancer cells), demonstrated that SLNs, containing tamoxifen showed an antitumoral activity comparable to free drug. Dryofragin is a phloroglucinol derivative extracted from Dryopteris fragrans (L.) Schott. In this study, the anticancer activity of dryofragin on human breast cancer MCF-7 cells was investigated. Dryofragin inhibited the growth of MCF-7 cells in a time and concentration-dependent manner. The cell viability was measured using MTT assay. After treatment with dryofragin for 72, 48 and 24 h, the IC₅₀ values were 27.26, 37.51 and 76.10 μM, respectively. Further analyses of DNA fragmentation and Annexin V-PI double-labeling indicated an induction of apoptosis. Introduction: Breast cancers (BC) are the major cause of death in women. More than 70% of BCs express high levels of estrogen receptor-α (ERα) and are sustained for their growth by the hormone. This thesis covers three separate but related studies. The first, a questionnaire survey of infant feeding practices in two nearby European regions (Dijon, France and Aalen, Germany) reports between- and withinregion differences in breastfeeding duration and variety of vegetables offered early in weaning. This survey identified the level and rate of vegetable variety and the specific foods to use in a second study. The 2nd study examined the effects of breast- or formula-feeding and different levels of vegetable variety (no, low or high) early in weaning on acceptance (intake and liking) of new foods.
