Ruthenium Oxide Nanotubes Via Template Electrosynthesis
2011
Ruthenium oxide nanotubes were fabricated by a single-step galvanostatic deposition using porous anodic alumina membrane as template. For the electrodeposition process, we used a electrochemical cell specifically designed in order to employ only 0.5 ml of 0.02 M RuCl3•xH2O solution. The deposition from a very small volume was specifically addressed owing to the high cost of ruthenium compounds, which could be of some relevance from an applicative point of view. Several techniques were used to characterize the samples prior to and after thermal treatment, which was carried out at different temperatures in order to study the crystallization process of the deposit. Raman spectroscopy of as-dep…
Antonio Belguardo.
New documents that have come to light on Antonio Belguardo allow us to draw a more complete biographic profile of one of the most prolific protagonists of Late Gothic Sicilian architecture; His activity, as far as we know, was mainly carried out in Palermo, between the las…
Cutting Fluids
2008
This chapter provides comprehensive knowledge regarding cutting fluids (CFs), their classifications and basic categories, including non-water-miscible, water-miscible and water-based CFs. Main properties and application areas of these three CFs are characterized and specified. Such effects as cooling, lubricating and processing (i.e., the influence on the behaviour of the cutting process) resulting from supplying CFs are outlined. The strategies of delivering CFs to the cutting zone, including flooding, external and internal supply of pressured CFs, along with minimum-quantity lubrication techniques as well as cryogenically cooled gases (CO2 snow and liquid nitrogen (LN2)) are described. So…
Results of the 1986-1991 campaigns. New data on its palaeolithic sequence
2022
From βαλανεῖα to thermae: unveiling the transition from Greek to Roman architectural models of baths by technological and provenance archaeometric st…
2019
So far unexplored, the introduction and the spread of the Roman thermal buildings in the prima provincia (Sicily) are widely debated in the current archeological studies. Mainly due to the lack of systematic excavations and intensively technological studies, the assessment of thermae in the Hellenistic-Roman Sicily has been thus far interpreted as a new social and architectural experience. However, a more careful archeological investigation would suggest a gradual transformation of the architectural landscape from the purely Greek bath tradition to the canonical thermae types. The aim of this paper is therefore to study the classical hot bath culture and, in particular, the transition from …
From Historical Silk Fabrics to Their Interactive Virtual Representation and 3D Printing
2020
The documentation, dissemination, and enhancement of Cultural Heritage is of great relevance. To that end, technological tools and interactive solutions (e.g., 3D models) have become increasingly popular. Historical silk fabrics are nearly flat objects, very fragile and with complex internal geometries, related to different weaving techniques and types of yarns. These characteristics make it difficult to properly document them, at the yarn level, with current technologies. In this paper, we bring a new methodology to virtually represent such heritage and produce 3D printouts, also making it highly interactive through the tool Virtual Loom. Our work involves sustainability from different per…
Life cycle energy performances and environmental impacts of a prefabricated building module
2018
Abstract The paper explores the energy performances and environmental impacts of a prefabricated building module located in Messina (Sicily, Italy) through an approach that combines both the non-steady state building simulation and the Life Cycle Assessment methodology. The building uses renewable energy technologies and is usable in emergency situations or as simply temporary housing. Results show that the building module causes the emission of 1.5 t of CO2eq/m2 and consumes 29.2 GJ/m2 of primary energy during its life cycle. The building achieves the Net Zero Energy Building target even if it has relevant environmental impacts in the materials production stage (72% on average of the total…
