Relationship Between Functional Traits, Functional Types, and Habitat in Boreonemoral Bryophytes

Abstract The aim of the present study was to determine a relationship between physiological traits and functional types of bryophytes from five boreonemoral habitats with a particular emphasis on discriminative ability of these traits. Sampling of 25 species was performed four times during one season. Water content, chlorophyll a fluorescence and photosynthetic pigment concentration were measured in field and water-equilibrated samples. Principal component analysis indicated the existence of an inverse relationship between concentration of pigments and water content. AbstractMacroalgae-based products are increasing in demand also in Europe. In the European Union, each category of macroalgae-based products is regulated separately. We discuss EU legislation, including the law on medicinal products, foods including food supplements and food additives, feed and feed additives, cosmetics, packaging materials, fertilizers and biostimulants, as well as biofuels. Product safety and consumer protection are the priorities with any new products. Macroalgae products can be sold as traditional herbal medicines. Abstract An efficient approach to enhance the performance of colorimetric biosensors has been developed. The biosensor is based on the co-immobilization of the reagent 3,3′,5,5′-teramethylbencidine (TMB) and the enzyme horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in a PDMS-TEOS-SiO2NPs support. The HRP, in presence of H2O2, catalyzes the oxidation of TMB, producing a blue color. The generated biosensor, doped with the substrate (TMB) and the enzyme (HRP) (entrapped or adsorbed), has been used to determine H2O2 in real samples. A segmentation algorithm for noisy images

International audience; This paper presents a segmentation algorithm for gray-level images and addresses issues related to its performance on noisy images. It formulates an image segmentation problem as a partition of a weighted image neighborhood hypergraph. To overcome the computational difficulty of directly solving this problem, a multilevel hypergraph partitioning has been used. To evaluate the algorithm, we have studied how noise affects the performance of the algorithm. The alpha-stable noise is considered and its effects on the algorithm are studied. Image retrieval system for citizen services using penalized logistic regression models

This paper describes a procedure to deal with large image collections obtained by smart city services based on interaction with citizens providing pictures. The semantic gap between the low-level image features and represented concepts and situations has been addressed using image retrieval techniques. A relevance feedback procedure is proposed for Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) based on the modelling of user responses. The role of extracellular polymeric substances on aerobic granulation with stepwise increase of salinity

Abstract A granular sequencing batch reactor (GSBR) worked for 164 days to study the effect of salinity on aerobic granulation. The feeding had an organic loading rate (OLR) of 1.6 kg COD⋅m −3 ⋅d −1 and a gradual increase of salinity (from 0.30 to 38 g NaCl − ⋅L −1 ) to promote a biological salt-adaptation. First aggregates (average diameter ≈ 0.4 mm) appeared after 14 days. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) analyses revealed that proteins were mainly higher than polysaccharides, and microorganisms metabolized EPSs as additional carbon source, mostly in feast phase, to face the energy demand for salinity adaptation.
