Local Extinction of Dragonfly and Damselfly Populations in Low- and High-Quality Habitat Patches
2010
Understanding the risk of extinction of a single population is an important problem in both theoretical and applied ecology. Local extinction risk depends on several factors, including population size, demographic or environmental stochasticity, natural catastrophe, or the loss of genetic diversity. The probability of local extinction may also be higher in low-quality sink habitats than in high-quality source habitats. We tested this hypothesis by comparing local extinction rates of 15 species of Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) between 1930-1975 and 1995-2003 in central Finland. Local extinction rates were higher in low-quality than in high-quality habitats. Nevertheless, for the thre…
Die Diskrepanz zwischen Linguistik und Fremdsprachenunterricht - am Beispiel der sogenannten Abtönungspartikeln im Deutschen
2016
It is beyond question that linguistics and foreign language teaching should go hand in hand, but unfortunately, this is not always the case. A good example of this phenomenon are the German modal particles: small words such as wohl in Achmed? Er ist wohl Türke, as denn in Meine Ferien waren super. - Wo warst du denn? or as mal in Komm mal!. Although numerous scientific publications have been made on this topic, it is sufficient to examine German textbooks in use to find out that they often fail to utilise the scientific insights developed from linguistics, regarding these words. After a description of German modal particles seen from the point of view of linguistics, the present article ana…
The entrepreneurial logic of startup software development : A study of 40 software startups
2021
Context: Software startups are an essential source of innovation and software-intensive products. The need to understand product development in startups and to provide relevant support are highlighted in software research. While state-of-the-art literature reveals how startups develop their software, the reasons why they adopt these activities are underexplored. Objective: This study investigates the tactics behind software engineering (SE) activities by analyzing key engineering events during startup journeys. We explore how entrepreneurial mindsets may be associated with SE knowledge areas and with each startup case. Method: Our theoretical foundation is based on causation and effectuatio…
Spectroscopy of the long-lived excited state in the neutron-deficient nuclides $^{195,197,199}$Po by precision mass measurements
2017
Direct mass measurements of the low-spin 3/2− and high-spin 13/2+ states in the neutron-deficient isotopes Po195 and Po197 were performed with the Penning-trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP at ISOLDE-CERN. These measurements allow the determination of the excitation energy of the isomeric state arising from the νi13/2 orbital in Po195,197. Additionally, the excitation energy of isomeric states of lead, radon, and radium isotopes in this region were obtained from α-decay chains. These excitation energies complete the knowledge of the energy systematics in the region and confirm that the 13/2+ states remain isomeric, independent of the number of valence neutrons. Direct mass measurements of the …
Liquid-phase alkali-doping of individual carbon nanotube field-effect transistors observed in real-time
2011
The carbon nanotube (CNT) is known to be very sensitive to changes in its surrounding environment. Our study is on the effects of mild, liquid-phase alkali-doping on electronic transport in individual CNTs. We find clear and consistent reversal from p- to n-type behavior, with all seven investigated CNT field-effect transistors (FETs) retaining a similar ON/OFF ratio and subthreshold slope. We have also measured the realtime electronic response during liquid-phase doping, and demonstrate detection of alkali cations with a signal response that ranges over more than three orders of magnitude. The doping is fully reversible upon exposure to oxygen, and the doping cycle is repeatable. We also c…
Femoral neck's fracture in Fahr's Syndorme
2016
Fahr's syndrome is a rare neurological diseas characterized by the presence of idiopathic deposition of calcium in aeras of the brain that control movements.
"She's straight, you delusional cunt!" : a study on bullying and homophobia in online fandoms
2016
Tutkielmaa varten tehty nettikysely suunnattiin “femslash”-faniryhmille. Näiden ryhmien median kulutukseen kuuluvat esimerkiksi tv-ohjelmien naishahmojen väliset (romanttiset) suhteet ja näistä suhteista puhuminen sekä eri materiaalien (kuten kuvien, videoiden ja fanifiktion) luominen ryhmien henkilöiden kesken. Kyselyn perusteella oli tarkoitus saada selville, miten yleistä näiden ryhmien kokem…
Antioxidant properties of polyphenol-rich cocoa products industrially processed
2010
Fermentation and roasting are the main causes of polyphenol degradation during the process for obtaining cocoa products. In the present study, a process for obtaining polyphenol-rich cocoa products on an industrial scale is described. The process avoids the fermentation and roasting steps and includes a step for the inactivation of the enzyme Polyphenol Oxidase (PPO), which helps preserve the polyphenol content present in the raw cocoa bean. In addition, our study evaluates the antioxidant capacity and characterizes the flavonoid profile of the polyphenol-rich cocoa products obtained from the natural polyphenolrich cocoa cake. Using different protocols, we have obtained three cocoa extracts…
Observation of Photon Polarization in theb→sγTransition
2014
This Letter presents a study of the flavor-changing neutral current radiative $B^{\pm} \to K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}\pi^{\pm}\gamma$ decays performed using data collected in proton-proton collisions with the LHCb detector at $7$ and $8\,$TeV center-of-mass energies. In this sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3\,\text{fb}^{-1}$, nearly $14\,000$ signal events are reconstructed and selected, containing all possible intermediate resonances with a $K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}\pi^{\pm}$ final state in the $[1.1, 1.9]\,$GeV/$c^{2}$ mass range. The distribution of the angle of the photon direction with respect to the plane defined by the final-state hadrons in their rest frame is studied in interva…
Risk Management for Sovereign Financing within a Debt Sustainability Framework
2018
The mix of instruments used to finance a sovereign is a key determinant of debt sustainability through its effect on funding costs and risks. We extend standard debt sustainability analysis to incorporate debt-financing decisions in the presence of macroeconomic, financial, and fiscal risks. We optimize the maturity of debt instruments to trade off borrowing costs with refinancing risk. Risk is quantified with a coherent measure of tail risk of financing needs, conditional Flow-at-Risk. A constraint on the pace of reduction of debt stocks is also imposed, and we model the effect of debt stocks on the yield curve through endogenous risk and term premia. On a simulated economy, we show that t…
