The effect of climate on Burgundy vintage quality rankings.
2019
Aim: Based on consensus rankings from prominent rating authorities, we examined the importance of a suite of climatic variables, organized by winegrape phenological stage, in distinguishing between high- and low-ranked vintages in Burgundy. Methods and Results: Vintage ratings of Burgundy wines acquired from 12 sources were evaluated to develop consensus rankings for red and white wines from 1961–2015. Climate variables (air temperature, precipitation, degree-day accumulations, etc.) were organized by mean phenological stage and compared between good and poor vintages using Mann-Whitney U tests and multivariate stepwise discriminant function analysis. High temperatures, particularly during t…
2018
The reign of Robert II of Burgundy (1272-1306) marks a rupture within the Capetian duchy'sgovernment. The evolutions that feature his governance are deeply linked to the relations that unitehim to the kings contemporary to his reign such as Philip III the Bold and Philip IV the Fair.Showing signs of a flawless faithfulness, Robert II places himself close to these kings in order toreaffirm his authority and to fulfill his own ambitions. This rapprochement is due to two majorevents - the first one being the matrimonial policy initiated by the Dukes of Burgundy since HughIV and the second one the numerous favours from Robert II to the kings both in the military fieldand regarding royal gov…

Soil erosion rates in Burgundian vineyards.
2006
Burgundian vineyards are affected by erosion phenomena that induce sediment transfer along hillslopes. The vineyard under study has occupied the western Bressan rift border for 1000 years, benefiting from marly limestone bedrock and its silt-sand covering. The combined effects of rainstorms and monoculture on slopes reaching 25°, induce a high level of erosion in the arable soil layer. Quantification of erosion rates on a pluri-decennial scale, using vine roots'as a palaeo-surface marker, has been performed on three parcels on three sites along the Côtes-de-Nuits and Côtes-de-Beaune. Assessed erosion rates of around 1 mm.yr-1 characterise current erosive dynamics involving a critical situat…

EAAgroSupECOLDUR; Do vole outbreaks have the same effects on suckler beef farms in Burgundy as they do on daily farms in Auvergne and Franche-Comte? Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 19 farmers from Burgundy who had been affected by a water vole outbreak in 2011. The results indicate that, just like farmers in Auvergne and Franche-Comte, farmers in Burgundy witnessed a decrease in forage quantity and quality. Farmers used diverse measures to deal with the outbreak (e.g., avoidance strategies or the use of bromadiolone). Farmers that described water voles as pests were more likely to have used bromadiolone, while those who described water voles in morphological terms or in ter…

Impact of climate change on water resource evolution in Burgundy, France (1980-2011) – Analysis of hydro-climatic parameters simulated at high resolution by a regional climate model (WRF) The regional climatic model ARW / WRF is used to make a dynamic downscaling of climate (driven by ERA-Interim) at a high spatial resolution (3 km2) over Burgundy, at daily time scale over the period 1980-2011. Climatic simulations were analyzed and compared with meteorological data, in order to validate them with the aim of their use by hydro(geo)logic models. The hydro-climatic parameters necessary as climatic inputs of these models, in particular precipitation and evapotranspiration, reproduce correctly …
2014
Assessment of hydric balance at the catchment scale, under climate change scenario Face to climate change, public policies must implement adaptation strategies. This implies that the effects of climate change are plainly identified on territories. However, in the current state, data and knowledge at the local level are limited or not available to decision makers. This work proposes to well characterize the local impacts of climate change and to develop synergies between researchers and territorial actors to prepare the public decision.
