Knowledge, Attitudes, and Smoking Behaviours among Physicians Specializing in Public Health: A Multicentre Study

2014

Background. Healthcare professionals have an important role to play both as advisers—influencing smoking cessation—and as role models. However, many of them continue to smoke. The aims of this study were to examine smoking prevalence, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours among four cohorts physicians specializing in public health, according to the Global Health Profession Students Survey (GHPSS) approach.Materials and Methods. A multicentre cross-sectional study was carried out in 24 Italian schools of public health. The survey was conducted between January and April 2012 and it was carried out a census of students in the selected schools for each years of course (from first to fourth year …

Tobacco use among medical students in Europe: results of a multicentre study using the Global Health Professions Student Survey

2012

Objective: To examine smoking prevalence, knowledge and attitudes, and tobacco cessation training among university students attending European medical schools using the Global Health Professional Students Survey approach. Methods: A cross-country, cross-sectional study was performed among 12 medical schools in four countries in Europe (Germany, Italy, Poland and Spain). The survey was performed during the second semester of the third year of study from March to May 2009. Results: In total, 2249 subjects entered the study (overall response rate 92%). The overall prevalence of smoking among medical students was 29.3% (95% confidence interval 28.1-34.7), with percentages ranging from 28% in Ge…

Perceived stress and smoking across 41 countries: A global perspective across Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas

2017

Within recent years, there has been a seismic shift in smoking rates from high-income to low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Evidence indicates that perceived stress may comprise a barrier for smoking cessation, but little is known about the association of perceived stress and smoking in LMICs. We conducted a cross-sectional, community-based study comprising 217,561 people [mean age 38.5 (SD = 16.1) years, 49.4% males]. A perceived stress score [range 2 (lowest-stress) 10 (highest-stress)] was computed from the Perceived Stress Scale. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted. In the overall sample, a one-unit increase in perceived-stress resulted in a 5% increased odd…

Reduced membrane-bound alkaline phosphatase does not affect binding of Vip3Aa in a Heliothis virescens resistant colony

2020

The Vip3Aa insecticidal protein from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is produced by specific transgenic corn and cotton varieties for efficient control of target lepidopteran pests. The main threat to this technology is the evolution of resistance in targeted insect pests and understanding the mechanistic basis of resistance is crucial to deploy the most appropriate strategies for resistance management. In this work, we tested whether alteration of membrane receptors in the insect midgut might explain the &gt

Smoking cessation opportunities in severe mental illness (tobacco intensive motivational and estimate risk — TIMER—): study protocol for a randomized…

2019

There is an increased risk of premature death in people with severe mental illness (SMI). Respiratory disorders and cardiovascular disease are leading causes of increased mortality rates in these patients, and tobacco consumption remains the most preventable risk factor involved. Developing new tools to motivate patients towards cessation of smoking is a high priority. Information on the motivational value of giving the lung age and prevention opportunities is unknown in this high-risk population. In the context of community care, screening and early detection of lung damage could potentially be used, together with mobile technology, in order to produce a prevention message, which may provi…

Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia: a proposal for diagnostic criteria.

2009

Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) is a rare form of oral leukoplakia, which was first described in 1985 by Hansen et al. Since then, various published case series have presented PVL as a disease with aggressive biological behaviour due to its high probability of recurrence and a high rate of malignant transformation, usually higher than 70%. PVL is a long-term progressive condition, which is observed more frequently in women and elderly patients over 60 years at the time of diagnosis. Eventually, PVL tends to become multifocal with a progressive deterioration of the lesions, making it more and more difficult to control. Tobacco use does not seem to have a significant influence on th…

Resident-Initiated Smoking Ban Surveillance: Text Mining of Shanghai Public Service Hotline Data

2019

Background: On March 1st, 2017, the Amendment of Regulations of Shanghai Municipality on Smoking Control in Public Places was formalized in Shanghai. Since then, this comprehensive smoke-free law prohibits smoking in indoor public places, workplaces, and public transport. To reinforce this law, the "12345 hotline" platform was introduced as an avenue for residents to report smoking violations. Methods: Throughout March 2017, the hotline back-end server had logged a total of 6,937 telephone text records. All records were collected, and text data were analyzed by natural language processing. The analysis of text data has gone through several steps, namely data masking, missing data deletion, …

Proteinaceous and oligosaccharidic elicitors induce different calcium signatures in the nucleus of tobacco cells.

2005

We previously reported elevated cytosolic calcium levels in tobacco cells in response to elicitors [D. Lecourieux, C. Mazars, N. Pauly, R. Ranjeva, A. Pugin, Analysis and effects of cytosolic free calcium elevations in response to elicitors in Nicotiana plumbaginifolia cells, Plant Cell 14 (2002) 2627-2641]. These data suggested that in response to elicitors, Ca2+, as a second messenger, was involved in both systemic acquired resistance (RSA) and/or hypersensitive response (HR) depending on calcium signature. Here, we used transformed tobacco cells with apoaequorin expressed in the nucleus to monitor changes in free nuclear calcium concentrations ([Ca2+](nuc)) in response to elicitors. Two …

In vivo imaging of an elicitor-induced nitric oxide burst in tobacco

2000

A growing body of evidence suggests that nitric oxide (NO), an important signalling and defence molecule in mammals, plays a key role in activating disease resistance in plants, acting as signalling molecule and possibly as direct anti-microbial agent. Recently, a novel fluorophore (diaminofluorescein diacetate, DAF-2 DA) has been developed which allows bio-imaging of NO in vivo. Here we use the cell-permeable DAF-2 DA, in conjunction with confocal laser scanning microscopy, for real-time imaging of NO in living plant cells. Epidermal tobacco cells treated with cryptogein, a fungal elicitor from Phytophthora cryptogea, respond to the elicitor with a strong increase of intracellular NO. NO-i…
