Towards more learning-centred English-medium education: promoting the combination of backward design and community of practice in teacher training

2022

Purpose Teaching in English-medium education (EME) requires mastery of content and ability to teach in a multilingual setting, but also pedagogical expertise and didactic agility. However, there is an apparent lack of proper training of EME teachers, who are typically experts of their field, but not necessarily equipped to design and implement EME. Moreover, there is still an evident gap with respect to understanding how EME teachers turn curricula into actual teaching and students’ learning. By addressing this gap, the present study provides recommendations for EME teacher training. Approach Finland, with its long EME traditions, was the present study’s context. Data saturation, i.e. adequ…

NEAR INFRARED PICOSECOND PULSED BACKWARD SECOND-HARMONIC-GENERATION IN PERIODICALLY-POLED LITHIUM NIOBATE

2011

We report on backward second-harmonic-generation in bulk periodically-poled congruent lithium niobate with a 3.2μm period. A picosecond pulsed laser allowed us exciting a resonance at 1722nm. The resonances were also resolved by temperature tuning.

Effects of different strength training frequencies on maximum strength, body composition and functional capacity in healthy older individuals

2017

There is controversy in the literature regarding the dose-response relationship of strength training in healthy older participants. The present study determined training frequency effects on maximum strength, muscle mass and functional capacity over 6 months following an initial 3-month preparatory strength training period. One-hundred and six 64–75 year old volunteers were randomly assigned to one of four groups; performing strength training one (EX1), two (EX2), or three (EX3) times per week and a non-training control (CON) group. Whole-body strength training was performed using 2–5 sets and 4–12 repetitions per exercise and 7–9 exercises per session. Before and after the intervention, ma…

SIMULATION OF THERMAL EFFECTS IN OPTOELECTRONIC DEVICES USING COUPLED ENERGY-TRANSPORT AND CIRCUIT MODELS

2008

A coupled model with optoelectronic semiconductor devices in electric circuits is proposed. The circuit is modeled by differential-algebraic equations derived from modified nodal analysis. The transport of charge carriers in the semiconductor devices (laser diode and photo diode) is described by the energy-transport equations for the electron density and temperature, the drift-diffusion equations for the hole density, and the Poisson equation for the electric potential. The generation of photons in the laser diode is modeled by spontaneous and stimulated recombination terms appearing in the transport equations. The devices are coupled to the circuit by the semiconductor current entering the…

Continuous-wave backward frequency doubling in periodically poled lithium niobate

2010

We report on backward second-harmonic-generation in bulk periodically poled congruent lithium niobate with a 3.2 microns period. A tunable continuous-wave Ti:sapphire laser allowed us exciting two resonant quasi-phase-matching orders in the backward configuration. The resonances were also resolved by temperature tuning and interpolated with standard theory to extract relevant information on the sample.

DEGENERATE MATRIX METHOD FOR SOLVING NONLINEAR SYSTEMS OF DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS

1998

Degenerate matrix method for numerical solving nonlinear systems of ordinary differential equations is considered. The method is based on an application of special degenerate matrix and usual iteration procedure. The method, which is connected with an implicit Runge‐Kutta method, can be simply realized on computers. An estimation for the error of the method is given. First Published Online: 14 Oct 2010

Some improvements in solving radial distributions networks through the backward/forward method

2005

In the electrical radial distribution networks analysis, the backward/forward method shows good features in terms of robustness, independence from load nature, small use of hardware resources and limited calculation time. In the present paper, some procedures to improve the b/f method with the aim of reducing the calculation time are presented. The adopted procedures regard the choice of the initial values of the nodes voltages and the way in which the convergence criterion is applied. The results of some tests carried out on some electrical test systems here reported have shown the efficiency of the proposed methodology in terms of calculation time reduction, especially when solving heavil…

A space-division time-division multiple access scheme for high throughput provisioning in WLANs

2005

Directional antennas may dramatically increase the capacity of a Wireless LAN by allowing several stations to simultaneously communicate. Since deployment of directive/smart antennas on the customer's terminals is awkward (for technological, cost, robustness, and convenience reasons) it is of interest to deploy advanced antenna solutions only at the Access Point. When omnidirectional transmissions are used at the Mobile Stations, the asynchronous nature of the 802.11 MAC handshake structurally limits the possibility to exploit spatial reuse. Significant throughput enhancements can be achieved only at the expense of redesigning (part of) the 802.11 MAC protocol: mainly a form of synchronizat…

Towards a relation oriented service architecture

2010

Over the past three decades, the Internet has evolved from a point to point, open, academic network to an applications and services oriented critical infrastructure. The Internet has become a vital component of society today, from its simple origin as an academic research project. During this transition, numerous applications and usages of the network emerged that cannot be efficiently implemented by adhering to the original design tenets of the Internet. Some of the tenets have been broken, others diluted and new ones are emerging to accommodate new paradigms. Moreover, applications and services have been moving slowly but consistently towards a uniform model based on Service Oriented Appr…
