Ultrasound as a Promising Tool for the Green Extraction of Specialized Metabolites from Some Culinary Spices

Spices are a popular food of plant origin, rich in various phytochemicals and recognized for their numerous properties. The aim of the study was to evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, as well as the content of specialized metabolites, of aqueous extracts of three spice species––garlic (Allium sativum L.), ginger (Zingiber officinalle L.) and turmeric (Curcuma longa L.)––prepared by green extraction methods. Ultrasound treatment increased the chromaticity parameter b value of turmeric and ginger extracts, thus indicating a higher yellow color predominantly due to curcuminoids characteristic of these species. Physiological pharmacokinetic model for ceftazidime disposition in the rat and its application to prediction of plasma concentrations in humans

Abstract A physiological pharmacokinetic model for the disposition of ceftazidime in the rat was developed. The model is composed of 10 compartments which represent most of the organs and tissues of the body. Ceftazidime concentration-time profiles in the organs and tissues represented in the model were simulated and compared with the observed concentration-time data after i.v. administration of 5 and 20 mg of antibiotic. The model gave an acceptable description of the observed data. Safety of micafungin in prospective and retrospective clinical trials

Summary Managing fungal diseases remains a major challenge for clinicians despite the improved armamentarium of antifungal agents. This review identified 19 publications reporting safety data on micafungin. Two of these publications were spin off publications, the remaining 17 (15 prospective, two retrospective) were included in the main assessment. Major adverse events reported which occurred in more than 2% in the study populations were infusion-related, gastro-intestinal and hepatic (LFT parameters elevations). Effect of pH and nitrite concentration on nitrite oxidation rate

The effect of pH and nitrite concentration on the activity of the nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) in an activated sludge reactor has been determined by means of laboratory batch experiments based on respirometric techniques. The bacterial activity was measured at different pH and at different total nitrite concentrations (TNO 2). The experimental results showed that the nitrite oxidation rate (NOR) depends on the TNO 2 concentration independently of the free nitrous acid (FNA) concentration, so FNA cannot be considered as the real substrate for NOB. Characterisation and Anaerobic Batch Degradation of Materials Accumulating in Anaerobic Digesters Treating Poultry Slaughterhouse Waste

We characterised materials accumulating in two failed mesophilic semi-continuous anaerobic digesters treating poultry slaughterhouse waste and, for reference, materials in the two well-performing digesters, to find the anaerobic degradability of these materials and the factors affecting their degradation. We also studied materials accumulating and stratifying in various layers in one of the two well-performing digesters. Sulphate-Reducing Laboratory-Scale High-Rate Anaerobic Reactors for Treatment of Metal- and Sulphate-Containing Mine Wastewater

Upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors were used in this study to evaluate the feasibility of the sulphate-reducing, anaerobic high-rate process to treat metal- and sulphate-containing mining wastewater (MWW). Four simultaneous reactors, inoculated with different inocula (mesophilic granular sludge from two UASB reactors, one treating sugar refinery wastewater and the other board mill wastewater) and operated with different loadings, were for 95 days fed with synthetic feed consisting of glucose and sulphate. Vacuum impregnation as a tool to introduce biopreservatives in gilthead sea bream fillets (Sparus aurata)

Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the possible technological uses of biopreservation and vacuum impregnation techniques to extend shelf life of gilthead sea bream fillets. Two impregnation media were studied: a solution containing lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and a nisin solution. Vacuum impregnation was carried out at 4 °C.
