Transport coefficients in desalting processes by electrodialysis

2011

Abstract In this work a thermodynamic analysis on the transport equations in the processes of electrodiffusion (EF) and electrodialysis (ED) has been developed. The transport equations are classified in two sets according to the information they contain: i ) fundamental and ii ) complementary. We determine that there are four fundamental transport coefficients needed to characterize these membrane systems. We also conclude that this number is not reduced to three when the Onsager reciprocal relation (ORR) is assumed. I have also obtained a new expression for the concentration rate in EF and ED processes from the mass and volume balance. This relation provides a new way for evaluating the ap…

Evaluation of building heating loads with dimensional analysis: Application of the Buckingham π theorem

2017

Abstract A detailed assessment of building energy performance requires a large amount of input data concerning building typology, environmental conditions, envelope thermophysical properties, geometry, control strategies, and several other parameters. Notwithstanding, the use of specialized software tools poses many challenges in regards to the retrieval of reliable and detailed information, setting a steep learning curve for engineers and energy managers. To speed up the preliminary assessment phase, it might be more convenient to resort to a simplified model that allows the evaluation of heating energy demand with a good level of accuracy and without excessive computational cost or user e…

Thermodynamic and Kinetic Modeling of Co-utilization of Glucose and Xylose for 2,3-BDO Production by Zymomonas mobilis

2021

Prior engineering of the ethanologen Zymomonas mobilis has enabled it to metabolize xylose and to produce 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO) as a dominant fermentation product. When co-fermenting with xylose, glucose is preferentially utilized, even though xylose metabolism generates ATP more efficiently during 2,3-BDO production on a BDO-mol basis. To gain a deeper understanding of Z. mobilis metabolism, we first estimated the kinetic parameters of the glucose facilitator protein of Z. mobilis by fitting a kinetic uptake model, which shows that the maximum transport capacity of glucose is seven times higher than that of xylose, and glucose is six times more affinitive to the transporter than xylose.…

Comparaison de deux méthodes de correction atmosphérique des données thermiques de Landsat TM

1996

The high resolution of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) thermal infrared data can be interesting in applications such as energy balance and crop water stress studies. However, surface temperature measurements are strongly affected by atmospheric effects, particularly by water vapour absorption, therefore a correction method is absolutely necessary. The impossibility of applying a split-window equation and the difficulty of having temporarily coincident radiosondes produce a slight use of Landsat TM data to obtain surface temperature. Vidal et al. show that in a zone with homogeneous climatic conditions, atmospheric correction can be evaluated by using energy balance equation and standard meteor…

CARTOGRAPHY OF AGROCLIMATIC INDICES AT MESOSCALE LEVEL: METHODOLOGY AND CASE STUDY OF BORDEAUX WINEGROWING AREA. Implications on vine development and…

2007

Climate spatial variability knowledge is essential in agronomy and forestry, in order to characterize production potential or to assess pest development risks. In viticulture, climate mainly governs grapevine development rate and berry ripening. The aim of the present work is to characterise climate spatial variability at mesoscale level, using several spatialization techniques at daily time step, applied to climate variables and agroclimatic indices, in order to evaluate its consequences on grapevine development and grape ripening. This study was led in the Bordeaux winegrowing region. Six variables were studied: minimum and maximum temperatures, solar radiation, reference evapotranspirati…

Évolution du bilan hydrique à l'échelle de bassins versants en contexte de changement climatique – mise place d’une méthodologie

2014

Assessment of hydric balance at the catchment scale, under climate change scenario Face to climate change, public policies must implement adaptation strategies. This implies that the effects of climate change are plainly identified on territories. However, in the current state, data and knowledge at the local level are limited or not available to decision makers. This work proposes to well characterize the local impacts of climate change and to develop synergies between researchers and territorial actors to prepare the public decision.

Psychomotor disadaptation syndrome

2020

Psychomotor disadaptation syndrome (PDS) was first described by the Geriatrics School of Dijon (France), three decades ago, under the name «psychomotor regression syndrome». Over time, the original clinical features remained unchanged. However, progress has been made in its pathophysiology understanding and care, hence the new name, PDS, appeared in the 1990s. The PDS is also called sub-cortico-frontal dysfunction syndrome since the 2000s. It corresponds to a decompensation of posture, gait and psychomotor automatisms, related to an alteration of the postural and motor programming, which is a consequence of sub-cortico-frontal lesions. The clinical features of PDS associate backward disequi…

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation leads to physiological gains enhancing postural balance in the pre‐frail elderly

2015

International audience; Physiological aging leads to a progressive weakening of muscles and tendons, thereby disturbing the ability to control postural balance and consequently increasing exposure to the risks of falls. Here, we introduce a simple and easy-to-use neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) training paradigm designed to alleviate the postural control deficit in the elderly, the first hallmarks of which present as functional impairment. Nine pre-frail older women living in a long-term care facility performed 4 weeks of NMES training on their plantarflexor muscles, and seven nontrained, non-frail older women living at home participated in this study as controls. Participants w…

How abrupt change in surface temperature impacts water balance over France? A case-study of bread wheat cultivated areas.

2022

Agricultural risk management is a major challenge for decision makers, public authorities and agricultural insurance companies, as crop losses linked to climate hazard are expected to increase in the context of climate change (Boucher et al., 2019). The present work is part of a PhD in partnership between Groupama insurance company (Domaine Assurance Récolte) and Biogeosciences laboratory (University of Burgundy). This collaborative research aims at depicting how, with the abrupt surface temperature warming, climate hazard evolution has affected water balance over France, and related agro-climatic risks.Since 1980s over western Europe, the warming trend intensifies strongly, consistent with…
