A global perspective on effectiveness of aid for trade

2013

Recent global initiatives on debt relief and development assistance call for increasing aid for trade to the poorest countries. The paper applies a multi-country computable general equilibrium model to measure the effectiveness of alternative aid for trade categories. The findings show that aid for trade policies expand trade and alleviate international income inequalities in the recipient countries, that will benefit mainly from aid for trade adjustment and technical assistance.

The 1-Harmonic Flow with Values into $\mathbb S^{1}$

2013

We introduce a notion of solution for the $1$-harmonic flow, i.e., the formal gradient flow of the total variation functional with respect to the $L^2$-distance, from a domain of $\mathbb R^m$ into a geodesically convex subset of an $N$-sphere. For such a notion, under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, we prove both existence and uniqueness of solutions when the target space is a semicircle and the existence of solutions when the target space is a circle and the initial datum has no jumps of an “angle” larger than $\pi$. Earlier results in [J. W. Barrett, X. Feng, and A. Prohl, SIAM J. Math. Anal., 40 (2008), pp. 1471--1498] and [X. Feng, Calc. Var. Partial Differential Equations, 37…

Non-equilibrium Markov state modeling of periodically driven biomolecules

2019

Molecular dynamics simulations allow to study the structure and dynamics of single biomolecules in microscopic detail. However, many processes occur on time scales beyond the reach of fully atomistic simulations and require coarse-grained multiscale models. While systematic approaches to construct such models have become available, these typically rely on microscopic dynamics that obey detailed balance. In vivo, however, biomolecules are constantly driven away from equilibrium in order to perform specific functions and thus break detailed balance. Here we introduce a method to construct Markov state models for systems that are driven through periodically changing one (or several) external p…

Pre-conceptual design of EU DEMO balance of plant systems: Objectives and challenges

2021

Abstract The European Research Roadmap to the Realisation of Fusion Energy foresees that the DEMO reactor is going to succeed ITER in the pathway towards the exploitation of nuclear fusion, achieving long plasma operation time, demonstrating tritium self-sufficiency and producing net electric output on an industrial scale. Therefore, its design must be more oriented towards the Balance of Plant (BoP) than it is in ITER. Since the early pre-conceptual phase of the DEMO project, emphasis has been laid on identifying the main requirements affecting the overall architecture of the BoP. For instance, specific efforts and proper solutions have been envisaged to cope with the pulsed nature of the …

Preliminary design of EU DEMO helium-cooled breeding blanket primary heat transfer system

2018

Abstract The European DEMO conceptual design foresees four Breeding Blanket (BB) concepts that rely on different cooling and breeding technologies. As DEMO has been conceived to deliver net electricity to the grid, the choice of the blanket coolant plays a pivotal role in the reactor design having a strong influence on plant operation, safety and maintenance. Moreover, the machine pulsed operation makes the BB Primary Heat Transfer System (PHTS) the main hub of the DEMO Balance of Plant (BoP). Within this framework, a study has been carried out to design the Ex-Vessel PHTS of the Helium-Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB) BB concept. The paper describes criteria and rationale followed with the aim to …

Progress in EU Breeding Blanket design and integration

2018

Abstract In Europe (EU), in the frame of the EUROfusion consortium activities, four Breeding Blanket (BB) concepts are being developed with the aim of fulfilling the performances required by a near-term fusion power demonstration plant (DEMO) in terms of tritium self-sufficiency and electricity production. The four blanket options cover a wide range of technological possibilities, as water and helium are considered as possible coolants and solid ceramic breeder in combination with beryllium and PbLi as tritium breeder and neutron multipliers. The strategy for the BB selection and operation has to account for the challenging schedule of the EU DEMO, the ambitious operational requirements of …

Magnetic forces in 2D foams

2005

The asymptotic expression for the ponderomotive force in the magnetic liquid film is derived and a role of the disjoining pressure in 2D magnetic foam formation is considered. New equation for the force balance at the vertex of 2D magnetic foam is proposed and modified Plateau rule for the films is obtained. The theoretical relation for the angle between films fits the experimental data for small magnetic Bond numbers very well.

Peltier’s and Thomson’s coefficients of thermoelectric phenomena in the observable formulation

2011

Four transport coefficients characterize the thermoelectric properties of materials. Three of them are widely measured and studied. But the number of references on the Peltier coefficient are very limited. This unequal result is a consequence of the Onsager reciprocal relation (ORR). A review on the preciseness and accuracy of Peltier coefficient measurements has been developed in this paper. Thus we can appreciate a low level in the experimental confirmation for the ORR. In order to describe the thermoelectric processes in an advantageous way, the observable formulation has been used. This is characterized by the electric potential measured at the probe terminals and for the heat flux whic…

Comprehensive Study of Poly(2,3,5,6-tetrafluoroaniline): From Electrosynthesis to Heterojunctions and Ammonia Sensing.

2018

In this work, we report for the first time on a comprehensive study of poly(2,3,5,6-tetrafluoroaniline) (PTFANI). Contrary to the nonfluorinated polyaniline (PANI) or its analogues bearing one fluorine atom, PTFANI is a poorly conductive material. We present a comprehensive study of the electrosynthesized PTFANI from its monomer in an acidic aqueous medium. PTFANI was fully characterized by a potential-pH diagram, spectroelectrochemistry, and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) measurements, as well as by a morphological study. Combined with the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, it allowed us to understand the redox properties of this polymer compared to those …
