Is backward disequilibrium in the elderly caused by an abnormal perception of verticality? A pilot study

2007

International audience; OBJECTIVE: We hypothesised that backward disequilibrium (BD), defined by a posterior position of the centre of mass with respect to the base of support, could be caused by a backward tilt in the perception of verticality. METHODS: The relationship between BD, the perception of verticality, and the history of falls in 25 subjects aged 84.5+/-7.4 years was analysed. An original ordinal scale, the BD scale (BDS), was used to quantify BD. Postural (PV) and haptic verticals (HV) were measured in sagittal plane. RESULTS: BDS scores closely correlated with the number of falls (r = 0.81, p =10(-5)). The more the PV was tilted backward, the greater the BDS scores (r = -0.95, …

Treatment with a new nutraceutical compound on patients suffering from balance disorders: Dizziness handicap inventory scores

2019

Objective: Purpose: To investigate whether treatment with citicoline, in association with vitamin B6, ginger, melissa and ViNitrox, could improve Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) scores in patients affected by dizziness and vertigo. Materials and methods: Fifty-five consecutive subjects (ranging from 49 to 71 years of age) who complained of dizziness and vertigo of unknown origins were treated with citicoline (500 mg) along with ginger (200 mg), vitamin B6 (2.1 mg), melissa (300 mg) and ViNitrox (150 mg) twice per day for a two-month period. Patients underwent pure tone audiometry (PTA) and a neurotological visit including spontaneous nystagmus testing, bedside examination and the Romberg…

Study of postural control and body balance in subjects with Down syndrome

2020

Purpose. Body imbalance and poor postural control have negative impact on gait and may increase the risk of falling in healthy individuals as well as those with Down syndrome (DS). Since people with DS have lower physical levels than people who do not present this condition, the purpose of our research was to compare features of postural control and body balance between subjects affected by DS and a control sample. Methods. Participants enrolled were divided into the following two groups: A DS group (DSG; n = 22; 9 females and 13 males; age range: 16-36 years) and an age-matched control group (CG; n = 25; 11 females and 14 males; age range: 16-36 years). All participants were subjected to t…

CFD Simulation of Particle Distribution in Stirred Vessels

2000

In this work the particle concentration distribution in two-phase stirred tanks is simulated on the basis of information on the three-dimensional flow field, as obtained by numerical solution of the flow equations (CFD) using the well known k –ɛ « turbulence model. Two modelling approaches are attempted. In the simpler method the flow field is first simulated neglecting the influence of the solid phase; on the basis of the resulting flow field a very simple sedimentation model is employed for solving the solids mass balance equations in order to compute the particle concentration field. In this case no inertial effects on the solid particles are considered, so that the convective and diffus…

Contribution of a new dynamic climate regionalization protocol for estimating the water balance of Douglas-fir forests

2022

Quantifying the regionalized impacts of climate change on forests is a major ecologicaland socio-economic issue. The decline of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) has been observed forabout 20 years and should be accelered. Recent work shows that regionalized estimation of waterbalance under forest canopy is hampered by the ability of regional climate models to correctlysimulate precipitation amount and seasonal cycle. Here we evaluate the ability of a new climateregionalization protocol to simulate a realistic precipitation regime required for the calculation offorest soil water balance.

Testing for external sustainability under a monetary integration process. Does the Lawson doctrine apply to Europe?

2015

Monetary integration, and more specifically, the creation of a monetary union in Europe, raises new economic questions concerning its functioning and governance. In particular, we focus on the implications of high and persistent current account deficits for the economic performance of monetary union members in the medium term. Recent literature has argued that conventional measures of external sustainability are misleading because they omit the effects of capital variations on net foreign asset positions due to, among others, stock or debt market crises. In this paper we revisit external sustainability making use of the database developed by Lane and Milesi-Ferretti (2007) that includes the…

Effects of Fatigue on Postural Sway and Electromyography Modulation in Young Expert Acrobatic Gymnasts and Healthy Non-trained Controls During Uniped…

2022

This study investigated whether expert acrobatic gymnasts respond differentially than their non-trained counterparts during a single-legged stance task performed before and after a protocol designed to induce fatigue in the ankle plantarflexor muscles in terms of (a) postural steadiness and (b) electromyography (EMG) activation. We hypothesized that neuromuscular adaptation due to training would lead to different behavior of center of pressure (COP) and EMG quantifiers after fatigue. Twenty eight female volunteers (aged 11 to 24 years) formed two groups: expert acrobatic gymnastics athletes (GYN, n = 14) and age-matched non-gymnasts [control (CTRL), n = 14]. Fatigue of the ankle plantarflex…

The value relevance of accounting information during the global financial crisis: evidence from Norway

2013

This study investigates how the recent financial crisis influenced the value relevance of accounting information. The empirical analyses show that the book values of equity explained most of the cross-sectional variation in stock prices during the crisis. Still, the earnings response coefficient increased significantly during the period of the crisis. The analysis suggests a separation between the information content of book values and earnings in a crisis situation. The findings are consistent with book values being highly relevant as a proxy variable for liquidation values in a crisis, whereas earnings, in contrast to the balance sheet, capture information about the future earning capabil…

West African Monsoon water cycle: 1. A hybrid water budget data set

2010

International audience; This study investigates the West African Monsoon water cycle with the help of a new hybrid water budget data set developed within the framework of the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analyses. Surface water and energy fluxes are estimated from an ensemble of land surface model simulations forced with elaborate precipitation and radiation products derived from satellite observations, while precipitable water tendencies are estimated from numerical weather prediction analyses. Vertically integrated atmospheric moisture flux convergence is estimated as a residual. This approach provides an advanced, comprehensive atmospheric water budget, including evapotranspiration,…

Results from the Fourth WMO Filter Radiometer Comparison for aerosol optical depth measurements

2018

Abstract. This study presents the results of the Fourth Filter Radiometer Comparison that was held in Davos, Switzerland, between 28 September and 16 October 2015. Thirty filter radiometers and spectroradiometers from 12 countries participated including reference instruments from global aerosol networks. The absolute differences of all instruments compared to the reference have been based on the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) criterion defined as follows: 95% of the measured data has to be within 0.005 ± 0.001∕m (where m is the air mass). At least 24 out of 29 instruments achieved this goal at both 500 and 865 nm, while 12 out of 17 and 13 out of 21 achieved this at 368 and 412 nm,…
