Random effects elliptically distributed in unbalanced linear models

In linear mixed effects models, random effects are used for modelling the variance-covariance structure of the response variable. These models are based on the assumption that the random effects are normally distributed, but in literature alternative random effect distributions have been proposed and the consequences of misspecification are investigated. These studies consider only balanced designs. Aim of this paper is to study an unbalanced linear mixed model with random effects elliptically distributed.

English translation of the Quran by women: the challenges of “gender balance” in and through language

This paper aims to explore and discuss how women translators of the Quran have dealt with the patriarchal linguistic elements in the source text by focusing on two main challenges of translation. First the problem of gender agreement differences between the target and the source language. Because Arabic is highly gendered and English is not, many feminine nouns, pronouns and verbs become invisible in English and as result the “gender balance” created in original could be lost in the translation. Quantification of the Raf-C1 Interaction With Solid-Supported Bilayers

By use of the quartz crystal microbalance technique, the interaction of the Raf-Ras binding domain (RafRBD) and the cysteine-rich domain Raf-C1 with lipids was quantified by using solid-supported bilayers immobilized on gold electrodes deposited on 5 MHz quartz plates. Solid-supported lipid bilayers were composed of an initial octanethiol monolayer chemisorbed on gold and a physisorbed phospholipid monolayer varying in its lipid composition as the outermost layer. Adhesion of liposomes: a quartz crystal microbalance study

Three different systems are presented, exploring the adhesion of liposomes mediated by electrostatic and lipid–protein interactions as well as molecular recognition of ligand receptor pairs. Liposomes are frequently used to gain insight into the complicated processes involving adhesion and subsequent events such as fusion and fission mainly triggered by specific proteins. Changes in personal work goals in relation to the psychosocial work environment: A two-year follow-up study

Associations between changes in the psychosocial work environment and changes in personal work goals were investigated in a two-wave, two-year longitudinal study. Psychosocial work environment was studied within the context of the Effort–Reward Imbalance model (ERI; Siegrist, 1996). The participants consisted of 423 young Finnish managers. Their most important personal work goals were categorized into seven content categories of competence, progression, well-being, job change, job security, organization, and finance at both measurement times. Evolution of osmosensing signal transduction in Metazoa: stress-activated protein kinases p38 and JNK.

Sponges (Porifera) represent the most basal branch of the Metazoa alive today. We show that two central stress-activated protein kinases involved in the osmosensing pathway, p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and JNK, can complement for the ancestral MAPK Hog1 in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. S. cerevisiae mutants lacking Hog1 (hog1-Delta 1) have been complemented with the sponge SDJNK and SDp38 genes. Western blotting has revealed that, after transformation, the hog1-Delta 1+ SDJNK(sense) and hog1-Delta 1+ SDp38(sense) clones express the sponge proteins. Drawing the Materials Balance for an MBT cycle from Routine Process Measures in a Plant located in Venice

An observation term was carried on in an MBT plant owned and run by a public Company to treat MSW left by separate collection. All observations and measurements were made without interfering with the ordinary operation rules, in order to assess the efficiency of one process cycle for a given batch of waste. Analytical data came from both a) process instruments and b) physical analysis of a batch of waste entering / exiting from a selected bio-cell. International audience; In the light of studies published in the last ten years, we have suspected a differential influence of the sides of hemispheric cerebral lesions on posture and balance.
