Investigation of the effect of intensive milling in a planetary ball mill on the thermal decomposition of basic nickel carbonate
2011
The kinetics of thermal decomposition of basic nickel carbonate NiCO3Ni?(OH)2?nH2O and the effect of intensive milling in a planetary ball mill on its parameters, have been investigated. The values of the reaction heat and of the activation energy of thermal decomposition have been determined. Investigations of the thermal decomposition of the products of ball milling of investigated compound revealed a distinct effect of milling on the reaction temperature and heat consumed during the thermal decomposition of investigated compound.
Experimental investigation and multi-scale modelling of the behavior of mechanically activated metallic powders : from binary systems to High Entropy…
2021
Generally, metal alloys consist of a main element associated with other elements present in smaller quantities such as iron, nickel, aluminum or copper alloys. The precise composition of an alloy is adjusted according to the required performance: high temperature behavior, corrosion resistance, mechanical properties, durability ... In 2004, a Taiwanese scientist, JW Yeh, had the idea of making an alloy base of several elements, at least 5, whose composition in the alloy varies between 5% and 30% at. Yeh invented the high entropy alloy (HEA). Mixed on a microscopic scale, the metals form a remarkably stable solid solution. The explanation is thermodynamic. An alloy is all the more stable as …
Microstructure-process relationship and reactivity at the nanoscale : a molecular dynamics study of Ni, Ni-Al, and Ti-Al metallic systems
2023
The process-microstructure relationship is central in materials science because the microstructure will determine the properties of the materials developed by the processes. In our work, we focused on different metallurgical processes by adopting a description at the atomic scale. This approach allows us to detect the elementary mechanisms that are at the origin of the observed microstructures without having to postulate macroscopic mechanisms or estimate the associated parameters. In this respect, molecular dynamics simulations provide a tool for "in-situ" observation of metallic systems as long as an atomic interaction potential is available. The originality of our approach consists in mo…
Effect of the milling conditions on the degree of amorphization of selenium by milling in a planetary ball mill
2007
The effect of the milling parameters (rotation speed of the milling device and duration of milling) on the phase composition of the products of milling of fully crystalline selenium has been investigated. The milling was conducted using a planetary micromill and the phase composition of the milling products was determined by differential thermal analysis. It has been found that ball milling leads to the partial amorphization of the starting crystalline material. The content of amorphous phase in the milling products depends, in a rather complicated way, on the milling parameters. At the milling parameters adopted in the present study, the milling product was never fully amorphous. The compl…
Investigation of the effect of intensive ball milling in a planetary ball mill on the thermal decomposition of cadmium carbonate and basic zinc carbo…
2007
The kinetics of thermal decomposition of cadmium carbonate CdCO3 and basic zinc carbonate ZnCO3?nZn(OH)2 and the effect of intensive milling in a planetary ball mill on its parameters, have been investigated. The values of the reaction heat and of the activation energies of thermal decomposition have been determined for both the compounds. Investigations of the thermal decomposition of the products of ball milling of investigated compounds revealed a slight effect of milling conditions on the reaction temperature and heat consumed during the thermal decomposition of ZnCO3?nZn(OH)2. No effect of ball milling on the thermal decomposition of CdCO3 has been found.
Luminescence properties of neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet obtained by the co-precipitation method combined with the mechanical process.
2005
Nanopowders of yttrium aluminium garnet Y3Al5O12 (YAG) doped with neodymium ions were obtained by the co-precipitation method from the reaction of aluminium and yttrium nitrate and neodymium oxide with ammonia. After washing and drying the hydroxide precursors were calcined at 500, 700, 800 and 900 °C for 1 hour and at 1000 °C for 3 hours. This product was treated by ball milling in a zirconia vial for 0.5, 1.5 and 10 h in order to achieve smaller nanoparticles. The structure, microstructure, morphology and optical properties were investigated by means of diffractometric, microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. The course of the amorphous-to-crystalline transformation was complete after c…
Ball-milling and AlB2 addition effects on the hydrogen sorption properties of the CaH2 + MgB2 system
2011
Abstract Among the borohydrides proposed for solid state hydrogen storage, Ca(BH 4 ) 2 is particularly interesting because of its favourable thermodynamics and relatively cheap price. Composite systems, where other species are present in addition to the borohydride, show some advantages in hydrogen sorption properties with respect to the borohydrides alone, despite a reduction of the theoretical storage capacity. We have investigated the milling time influence on the sorption properties of the CaH 2 + MgB 2 system from which Ca(BH 4 ) 2 and MgH 2 can be synthesized by hydrogen absorption process. Manometric and calorimetric measurements showed better kinetics for long time milled samples. …
Correlation between milling parameters and microstructure characteristics of nanocrystalline copper powder prepared via a high energy planetary ball …
2007
The microstructure evolution of Cu-nanostructured powders versus the ball milling conditions was investigated by whole peak profile powder pattern modeling method. This method allows defining in some approach the characteristics of as-milled Cu powder microstructure in terms of crystallite size, type and density of dislocations and twin faults density. It is shown that the change of microstructure characteristics of as-milled Cu powder versus the ball milling conditions (under constant time of the ball milling) depend on only some energy parameters of the milling, for example, average size of crystallite is uniquely defined by energy of the shock, whereas the portion of edge and screw compo…
Local structure of ball-milled LaNi5 hydrogen storage material by Ni K-edge EXAFS
2010
Abstract Local structure of the nanostructured LaNi5 hydrogen storage alloys, prepared by ball-milling, has been studied using Ni K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. Results indicate that the ball-milling up to 100 h results in the production of nanoparticles characterized by large atomic disorder and slightly reduced unit-cell volume, compared to the bulk LaNi5. High temperature annealing appears to help in partial recovery of atomic order in the ball-milled samples; however, long-time ball-milled samples retain large disorder even after the high temperature annealing. The results suggest that the large disorder and the reduced unit-cell volume might be causing a …
Effect of Ni content on the structure and hydrogenation property of mechanically alloyed TiMgNix ternary alloys
2017
Abstract In this study, TiMgNix samples (x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1) have been prepared by mechanical alloying using a planetary high-energy ball mill. The structural transformations were characterized by XRD and indicated that all the as-milled TiMgNix alloys consist of mixtures of crystalline Mg and amorphous Ti-Ni-(Mg) phase. TEM analyses also show that nanocrystallites and amorphous phases coexist in the as-milled TiMgNi alloy. Electrochemical test shows that the TiMgNi composition yields the highest discharge capacity. The discharge capacities and activation properties of TiMgNix alloys linearly increase with increasing Ni content. The MgTiNi0.8 composition boasts the best cycling prope…
