Posterior One-Trocar-Assisted Pyeloplasty
2019
Introduction Ureteropelvic junction obstruction is the most common pediatric obstructive uropathy. Retroperitoneal lap- aroscopic-assisted dismembered pyeloplasty (OTAP) combines the advantages of a retroperitoneal approach with the high success rate of the open technique. A modification of the OTAP, using a posterior muscle-sparing incision to approach the kidney, is described. Surgical technique With the patient placed in prone position, a transverse 15-mm-long skin incision is made. A 12-mm bal- loon Hasson trocar with operative telescope is inserted after the Gerota’s fascia has been opened. The ureteropelvic junction is exteriorized and a traditional dismembered pyeloplasty is performe…
Does velocity of dilatation influence the result of dilatation? A postmortem study.
1988
We evaluated the influence of velocity of dilatation on the success of and the vascular damage produced by dilatation. Nonatheroslerotic segments of distal superficial femoral arteries were dilated "fast" (n = 69) or "slow" (n = 45) under standard conditions with balloon catheters. The arterial wall was overstretched between 1% and more than 60%. The success of dilatation rose continuously with increasing overstretching during dilatation. The damage to the arterial wall by dilatation increased discontinuously with increasing overstretching. Dilatation success and damage patterns did not differ in the "slow" and "fast" groups.
LONG-TERM RESULTS AFTER ENDOSCOPIC DILATION OF POST-OPERATIVE COLO-COLONIC ANASTOMOTIC STENOSES. OUR EXPERIENCE IN 42 PATIENTS.
2013
The aim of this study is to evaluate long-term complications and patient's quality of life after the endoscopic treatment of benign anastomotic colo-colonic strictures. From January 2000 to November 2008,, 42 patients who had undergone surgery for colorectal cancer were endoscopically treated for a postoperative symptomatic stricture. The dilation were performed using a 20-30 mm pneumatic dilator. The clinical results were classified in relation to the abdominal symptomatology reported by the patients, and were evaluated in the short-term (one-week) and long-term (mean follow-up.36 months)period. Results: 15 patients underwent a total of 22 dilating sessions; 9 patients had a single dilatin…
DISPERSAL OF STEGODYPHUS DUMICOLA (ARANEAE, ERESIDAE): THEY DO BALLOON AFTER ALL!
2001
Abstract There has been some controversy about whether adult females of social Stegodyphus disperse by ballooning. Here we show that adult Stegodyphus dumicola (Eresidae) Pocock 1898 are able to gain up-lift by releasing a very large number of threads. The threads fan out widely from the spider's body and form a triangular sheet. This previously unknown ballooning mechanism, enables even large spiders to disperse over large distances.
P3691Intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation in takotsubo syndrome complicated by cardiogenic shock: short- and long-term results from a cohort of 2250…
2019
Abstract Background Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is featured by an acute and reversible left ventricular dysfunction and can be complicated by cardiogenic shock. Intra-aortic balloon pumping (IABP) use in this setting is controversial, and few data are available from large populations. Aim of this study was therefore to evaluate short- and long-term impact of IABP on mortality in TTS complicated by cardiogenic shock. Methods The GEIST registry is a multicenter, international registry on TTS involving 38 centers from Germany, Italy and Spain. Between 2006 and 2017, 2250 consecutive patients with TTS were enrolled. Results Of the 2250 patients, 211 (9%) experienced cardiogenic shock during hospit…

Bioresorbable vascular scaffold use for coronary bifurcation lesions: A substudy from GHOST EU registry
2016
Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate midterm outcomes of bioresorbable vascular scaffolds (BVS) implanted in bifurcation lesions. Background BVS have emerged as an alternative to conventional metallic drug-eluting stents for the treatment of coronary complex lesions. Methods Between November 2011 and January 2014, 1189 patients underwent percutaneous coronary intervention with BVS at 10 European centers (GHOST EU registry). Of these, 289 consecutive patients (302 bifurcation lesions) treated with either single-stenting (n = 260) or double-stenting (n = 42) were evaluated. Results True bifurcations were treated in 44.7%. Intravascular ultrasound and optical coherence tomography w…
Apical thrombus in a patient with takotsubo cardiomyopathy
2008
We report a case of apical thrombus formation among a group of 15 patients with takotsubo cardiomyopathy who were referred for a suspected acute coronary syndrome over a 2.5-year period. To the best of our knowledge, no data are available regarding the treatment of this syndrome. According to current literature and our reported experience, the use of anticoagulant therapy administered until complete resolution of wall motion abnormalities appears to be appropriate to treat apical thrombus formation and any possible subsequent embolism. © 2008 Italian Federation of Cardiology.
European experiences with push-and-pull enteroscopy in double-balloon technique (double-balloon enteroscopy).
2006
This article describes research concerning push-and-pull enteroscopy. Clear and possible indications for this technique are highlighted.
B-MINE, the balloon-borne microcalorimeter nuclear line explorer
2001
B-MINE is a concept for a balloon mission designed to probe the deepest regions of a supernova explosion by detecting Ti-44 emission at 68 keV with spatial and spectral resolutions that are sufficient to determine the extent and velocity distribution of the Ti-44 emitting region. The payload introduces the concept of focusing optics and microcalorimeter spectroscopy to nuclear line emission astrophysics. B-MINE has a thin, plastic foil telescope multilayered to maximize the reflectivity in a 20 keV band centered at 68 keV and a microcalorimeter array optimized for the same energy band. This combination provides a reduced background, an energy resolution of 50 eV and a 3sigma sensitivity in …
