The Banat has been one of Europe’s most multilingual regions since the 18th century. From the 19th century European intellectuals have been engaged in building nations, which has resulted in the marginalization of multilingualism in many forms. The monolingual literary novel has been described as one of the important instruments in this process. A trianoni békeszerződés által feldarabolt Bánság etnikailag talán legtarkább vidéke napjainkban a Romániához csatolt területeknek. Ezen a vidéken volt lehetőségem terepmunkát végezni három nyári tanulmányút keretében (1998–2000). A finn–magyar terepmunkacsoport érdeklődési köre több területre terjedt ki. Kutatási területünk a romániai Bánságon belül az Arad, Lippa és Temesvár alkotta háromszög volt. Engem nyelvészként természetszerűen a többnyelvűség kérdése érdekelt, magyarul beszélőkkel készítettem interjúkat. A tanulmány a magyar nyelvi standarddal foglalkozik. A használt elméleti keret a nyelvi ideológiák kutatása, amelyet kiegészítettem a társalgáselemzés módszertanával. A nyelvi standard jellegzetesen ideológiai fogalom. A magyar nyelvészetben is nyelven kívüli jegyekkel definiálják a magyar nyelvi standard kifejezést. A magyar kultúra standard központú nyelvi kultúra, amelynek fő ismerve az, hogy a magyar nyelv alapjelentésben egyenlő standard változatával. Ez ellen a próbál tenni határtalanítás címen a szociólingvisták és a határon túli nyelvészek egy csoportja. This is an introduction to a compilation of six articles on language ideologies in the Romanian Banat. My dissertation was initiated by fieldwork in the area, resulting to a database of interviews among the Hungarian and German inhabitants. This data is compared to intellectual writings. With regards to researcher position, I identify myself as a traveler in the area and as a foreign scholar. The analytical framework of this study draws from the study of Language Ideologies and Conversation Analysis.Here, language ideologies are broadly defined as metalinguistic discourse or talk about language.
