Transcription factor NRF2 as a therapeutic target for chronic diseases: a systems medicine approach
2018
Systems medicine has a mechanism-based rather than a symptom- or organ-based approach to disease and identifies therapeutic targets in a nonhypothesis-driven manner. In this work, we apply this to transcription factor nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (NRF2) by cross-validating its position in a protein-protein interaction network (the NRF2 interactome) functionally linked to cytoprotection in low-grade stress, chronic inflammation, metabolic alterations, and reactive oxygen species formation. Multiscale network analysis of these molecular profiles suggests alterations of NRF2 expression and activity as a common mechanism in a subnetwork of diseases (the NRF2 diseasome). This netw…
Activation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related (Nrf2) system as a novel therapeutic approach in COPD
2019
Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is an inflammatory lung disease caused by chronic exposure to cigarette smoke. Oxidative stress is one of the most important mechanisms involved in the physiopathology of COPD. Nuclear Factor Erythroid 2-related (Nrf2) is critical in protection against oxidative stress by inducing expression of antioxidant genes and a decrease in its expression has been observed in COPD patients. Objective: The aim of this study was to characterise the effects of Bardoxolone, Omavexolone and Obacunone as antioxidant drugs in COPD. Methods: Peripheral blood neutrophils from COPD and healthy volunteers and Primary Human Bronchial Epithelial cells were i…

Fragmentation(s) and Realism(s): Has the Fragment Gone Mainstream?
2019
This article tackles what seems to be a revival of fragmentary fiction in English in the 21st century. It briefly traces the lineage of critical interest in the fragment from German Romanticism through Bertolt Brecht and Modernism to postmodern film studies, in an attempt to highlight not only the temporal, but also the spatial and visual dimension of discontinuity evinced by recent fragmentary fiction. Six novels published between 2005 and 2017 are discussed sequentially, in a manner redolent of cinematic movement: Tom McCarthy’s Remainder 2005, Anne Enright’s The Gathering 2007, Yaa Gyasi’s Homegoing 2016, Mohsin Hamid’s Exit West 2017, Ali Smith’s Autumn 2016, and George Saunders’s Linco…
Gli intellettuali e la riforma della scuola: un dibattito sulle pagine di «Rinascita»
2010
The author analyzes, from the Second World War, the debate around school reform born on the pages of «Rinascita». The protagonists were scholars of the caliber of Marchesi L. Lombardo Radice, Banfi and enlargement of the main issues focused around education for the working classes as a means of social ascent (and here he became interested Lombardo Radice). They discussed also the opportunity to bring the school post primary the model of classical humanistic culture or adapt to technical requirements of the manufacturing world. On the pages of «Rinascita» these issues were discussed for many years with great interest.
Sfida al principio di imputazione. Una conversazione con Philip Zimbardo
2020
"Are we born free or do we become free?" is the core question of this essay: a conversation between the author and Philip Zimbardo, the social psychologist who conducted the Stanford Prison Experiment, one of the most classical and debated experiment in social sciences. Zimbardo explored the so-called psychology of evil, isolating a number of situational factors that can induce the most abject actions in most human beings. The fact that murderers can be produced in the laboratory poses an insidious challenge to the classical categories of criminal law, in particular the assumption that imputability rests on the free will. The author compares her interlocutor's assertions with a number of le…
Letture gramsciane di Giuseppe Lombardo Radice (I parte)
2011
In Gramsci’s intellectual development is not a place on the periphery is occupied by the figure of Lombrado Root. Prominent character of pedagogy idealism and importer in Italy, activist of instances (even American), socialist “romantic, sentimental, unscientific.” Lombardo Radice was a careful student of the drama of the South and Gramsci was always very interested in the work of the Sicilian and there are many similarities (apparent) between the two intellectuals: 1) the focus on popular culture, 2) the combination between educational and political problems, and 3) the reference to the figure of Leonardo and other similarities yet. The author has done a thorough research work and signific…

2023
