Some aspects regarding the static behavior of basalt in the machine building industry

2017

Basalt is a material available in big quantities in nature. It has a low price and can be used in various domains. It can be relatively easily extracted from natural deposits and processed by means of melting. Melted and recrystallized basalt has demonstrated promising behavior with regards of its use in manufacturing, as reported in the literature. This work aims to present some aspects regarding the opportunity of using basalt in manufacturing the subassemblies of machine-tools. The research was made using grey cast iron and steel parts as reference for a comparative study. The researches presented in this work were focused on analyzing the behavior of basalt parts submitted to static str…

Study on Experimental Determination of the Elasticity Modulus of Casted Basalt

2020

Basalt is a material available in big quantities in nature. It has a low price and can be used in various domains. It can be relatively easily extracted from natural deposits and processed by means of melting. Melted and recrystallized basalt has demonstrated promising behavior with regards of its use in manufacturing, as reported in the literature. This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the determination of the modulus of elasticity of molten and recrystallized basalt by the method of resistive electrical tensometry and to validate the result and by simulation using finite elements method. Testing methodology, experimental test, data records, data processing and result…

Some aspects regarding the thermic behaviour of a basalt parts in machine building industry

2019

This work aims to present some aspects regarding the opportunity of using basalt in manufacturing the subassemblies of machine tools. Melted and recrystallized basalt has demonstrated promising behavior with regards of its use in manufacturing, as reported in the literature. The researches presented in this work were focused on analyzing the behavior of basalt parts for machine tools submitted to thermic stress. The tests were made using grey cast iron and steel parts as reference for a comparative study. Testing methodology, specific measuring apparatus used, experimental test data records, data processing and resulting conclusions regarding the possibility of using basalt in machine tools…

A mechanism forming silicic segregations from basaltic magma discovered in igneous rocks of Western Sicily

1983

Summary. Mechanisms forming silicic segregations from basaltic magmas are considered of primary importance when dealing with magmatic problems. However, the processes which give rise to silicic segregations from basaltic magmas are so far obscure. Fortunately, the discovery of spheroidal felsic masses in some basic rocks of Western Sicily throws light on this subject. To clarify the relationships between felsic and basic fractions particular attention has been paid to the interactions which occurred at their contact. Textural evidence indicates that the accretion mechanism of the Sicilian felsic segregations tends to obliterate the silicate liquid immiscibility effects and suggests that the…

Fe-rich Dunite Xenoliths from South African Kimberlites: Cumulates from Karoo Flood Basalts

2007

Fe-rich dunite xenoliths within the Kimberley kimberlites comprise olivine neoblasts with minor elongated, parallel-oriented ilmenite, and rarely olivine porphyroclasts and spinel. Compared with typical mantle peridotites, olivines in the Fe-rich dunites have lower forsterite (Fo87^89) and NiOcontents (1300^2800 ppm), which precludes a restitic origin for the dunites. Chrome-rich spinels are remnants of a metasomatic reaction that produced ilmenite and phlogopite.Trace element compositions differ between porphyroclastic and neoblastic olivine, the latter having higherTi, V, Cr and Ni and lower Zn, Zr and Nb contents, documenting their different origins. The dunites have high Os/Os ratios (0 …

GEOCHEMICAL CONSTRAINTS ON THE ORIGIN OF CALCALKALINE AND ALKALINE MAGMAS OF THE EASTERN TRANS-MEXICAN VOLCANIC BELT

1988

Metamorphism and melting of picritic crust in the early Earth

2014

Abstract Partial melting experiments with models of Archean oceanic crust (MAOC; with 11, 13 and 15 wt.% MgO) are used to investigate the role of metamorphism and melting of primary picritic compositions in the formation of TTG-like melts and continental crust on the early Earth. The approach investigates the possibility that the average early crust composition was comparatively MgO-rich and evolved to lower magnesium content during the secular cooling of the Earth. High-pressure partial melting experiments indicate a transition of melt compositions from aluminous basaltic melts in MAOC 15 to predominantly tonalitic melts in MAOC 11 and higher melting temperatures with increasing magnesium …

Petrology of mafic lavas within the Onega plateau, central Karelia: evidence for 2.0 Ga plume-related continental crustal growth in the Baltic Shield

1998

The Onega plateau constitutes part of a vast continental flood basalt province in the SE Baltic Shield. It consists of Jatulian-Ludikovian submarine volcanic, volcaniclastic and sedimentary sequences attaining in places 4.5 km in thickness. The parental magmas of the lavas contained ∼10% MgO and were derived from melts generated in the garnet stability field at depths 80–100 km. The Sm-Nd mineral and Pb-Pb whole-rock isochron ages of 1975 ± 24 and 1980 ± 57 Ma for the upper part of the plateau and a SHRIMP U-Pb zircon age of 1976 ± 9 Ma for its lower part imply the formation of the entire sequence within a short time span. These ages coincide with those of picrites in the Pechenga-Imandra b…

Syn- and post-eruptive mechanism of the Alaskan Ukinrek Maars in 1977

2008

The two alkali olivine basaltic Ukinrek Maars (East Maar and West Maar) and one scoria cone within East Maar erupted within eleven days (March 30–April 9, 1977) on the Alaskan Peninsula, 13 km north of Mt. Peulik, an andesite volcano of the Aleutian Range. The East Maar, with a diameter of 300 m, is located within a small graben system striking N 1100 E, oblique to the Aleutian trench in a distance of 350 km. On these tensional faults two eruption centres occur: The East Maar and a scoria cone on the southeastern margin of its crater bottom. The scoria cone was active more or less during the whole eruption activity of East Maar. The West Maar, with a diameter of 140 m, is located just west …
