Abstract Background The life cycle of the brachylaimid trematode species Renylaima capensis, infecting the urinary system of the shrew Myosorex varius (Mammalia: Soricidae: Crocidosoricinae) in the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve, South Africa, has been elucidated by a study of its larval stages, epizootiological data in local snails and mammals during a 34-year period, and its verification with mtDNA sequencing. Chromosomal Localization of 18S-28S rDNA and (TTAGGG)n Sequences in Two South African Dormice of the Genus Graphiurus (Rodentia: Gliridae).

Classical cytogenetics and mapping of 18S-28S rDNA and (TTAGGG)<>n sequences by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was performed on Graphiurus platyops (GPL) and Graphiurus ocularis (GOC) metaphases with the aim to characterize the genomes. In both species, inverted DAPI karyotypes showed the same diploid number, 2n = 46, and hybridization of the (TTAGGG)<>n probe revealed interstitial telomeric sequences (ITSs) at the centromeres of almost all bi-armed chromosomes. iNOS-derived nitric oxide mediates the increase in TFF2 expression associated with gastric damage: role of HIF-1.

Trefoil (TFF) peptides are involved in gastrointestinal mucosal restitution. An hypoxia inducible factor 1 (HIF-1)-dependent induction of TFF genes has been reported in gastric epithelial cells. Nitric oxide (NO) is associated with mucosal damage and modulates HIF-1 activity. The aim of the present study was to analyze the role of iNOS-derived NO in HIF-1alpha stabilization and TFF gene expression in damaged gastric mucosa. Aspirin caused gastric injury that peaked 6 h after dosing and returned to normality at 24 h. iNOS mRNA expression occurs in the corpus in parallel with damage. Gnathostomatid nematodes identified morphologically as Spiroxys japonica Morishita, 1926 were collected from the dark-spotted frog Pelophylax nigromaculatus (Hallowell) (Amphibia: Ranidae) in China. Light and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the morphology of this species in detail. Previously unreported morphological features are revealed and others corrected. Vitamin E activates CRABP-II gene expression in cultured human fibroblasts, role of protein kinase C

The treatment of human fibroblasts with different tocopherols in the presence of retinol caused an increase in cytoplasmic retinoic acid binding protein II (CRABP-II) mRNA and protein. The possibility of an involvement of protein kinase C (PKC) in the response to tocopherols was supported by the results obtained with the PKC-specific inhibitors, calphostin C and bisindolylmaleimide I. The effect of alpha-tocopherol was prevented by okadaic acid, suggesting that a protein phosphatase is responsible for PKC dephosphorylation produced by the presence of tocopherols. Microbial Succession in the Gut: Directional Trends of Taxonomic and Functional Change in a Birth Cohort of Spanish Infants

In spite of its major impact on life-long health, the process of microbial succession in the gut of infants remains poorly understood. Here, we analyze the patterns of taxonomic and functional change in the gut microbiota during the first year of life for a birth cohort of 13 infants. We detect that individual instances of gut colonization vary in the temporal dynamics of microbiota richness, diversity, and composition at both functional and taxonomic levels. Detection of translocations affecting the BCL6 locus in B cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma by interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization

Structural alterations in 3q27 affecting the BCL6 locus are among the most frequent changes in B-NHL. The aim of the present study was to establish an interphase-FISH assay for the detection of all diverse BCL6 translocations in B-NHL. Two different approaches were tested, one using a PAC-clone spanning the major breakpoint region (MBR) of BCL6 (span-assay), and another using two BAC clones flanking the MBR (flank-assay). Interphase FISH with the span-assay detected the various BCL6 translocations in seven B-NHL cell lines.
