Quantitative analysis of the effect of controlled-release formulation on nonlinear gastrointestinal absorption of P-glycoprotein substrate talinolol …

2020

Abstract Oral absorption of talinolol, a substrate of P-glycoprotein (P-gp), from a sustained-release (SR) formulation was reportedly decreased compared to that from an immediate-release (IR) formulation. The aim of this study was to predict and understand the effect of controlled-release formulation on the oral absorption of P-gp substrates by developing a physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) absorption model incorporating multiple kinetic parameters obtained from in vitro studies, using talinolol as a model substrate. Simulation analysis using the developed PBPK absorption model indicated that the clinically observed marked decrease in the plasma concentration of talinolol adminis…

FLEXIBLE AND TENACIOUS GOAL PURSUIT IN RELATION TO OUTDOOR MOBILITY IN OLD AGE

2018

Goal pursuit may affect older people’s outdoor mobility, a correlate of quality of life. This study investigated associations of flexible and tenacious goal pursuit with perceived autonomy in participation outdoors and life-space mobility. Participants were community-dwelling older people aged 79–93 years (n=185). Tenacious goal pursuit (TGP) and flexible goal adjustment (FGA) were self-reported with separate scales (ranges 5–25). Perceived autonomy in participation was assessed with the Impact on Participation and Autonomy ‘outdoors’-subscale (range 0–20), and life-space mobility with the Life-Space Assessment (range 0–120). Two-step cluster analysis was used to create data-driven goal pur…

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Modelling-Oriented Workshops for Engineering Undergraduates in the Field of Thermally Activated Phenomena

2017

Two 20-h modelling-based workshops focused on the explanation of ther- mally activated phenomena were held at the University of Palermo, Italy, during the Academic Year 2014–2015. One of them was conducted by applying an inquiry-based approach, while the other, still based on laboratory and modelling activities, was not focused on inquiry. Seventy-two students belonging to the Undergraduate Program for Chemical Engineering attended the two workshops. The related content was focused on an à la Feynman unifying approach to thermally activated phenomena. Question- naires were administered to the students of both groups, before and post instruction. Responses were analysed using k-means cluster…

Action research as a school-based strategy in intercultural professional development for teachers

2011

Abstract Teacher professional development is a key factor for transforming professional and school culture. This article describes a case study undertaken in a Spanish school during the 2007–2008 academic year. Our aim is to explain how action research methodology was applied to encourage professional and school culture towards an intercultural and inclusive approach. Our results show that the training process challenged teachers’ pre-existing deficit theory perspectives and empowered them as leaders for school change. The conclusions identify the key factors that enabled teachers to engage in critical reflection, and to implement strategies for collaborative work and community participatio…

gNOMO: a multi-omics pipeline for integrated host and microbiome analysis of non-model organisms

2020

The study of bacterial symbioses has grown exponentially in the recent past. However, existing bioinformatic workflows of microbiome data analysis do commonly not integrate multiple meta-omics levels and are mainly geared toward human microbiomes. Microbiota are better understood when analyzed in their biological context; that is together with their host or environment. Nevertheless, this is a limitation when studying non-model organisms mainly due to the lack of well-annotated sequence references. Here, we present gNOMO, a bioinformatic pipeline that is specifically designed to process and analyze non-model organism samples of up to three meta-omics levels: metagenomics, metatranscriptomic…

From Laboratory Mixes Evaluation to Full Scale Test: Fatigue Behavior of Bio-Materials Recycled Asphalt Mixtures

2020

The present paper describes the full-scale accelerated test, carried out on asphalt pavements made up with bio-materials, especially designed to help reusing Reclaimed Asphalt (RA) by re-activating the aged binder. Four pavement sections were evaluated: three pavement sections with innovative bio-materials (bio-recycled asphalt mixtures), and a reference section with a conventional, high modulus asphalt mix (EME2). In this study, fatigue resistance was first evaluated in laboratory, with two-points bending test, and then at full scale under heavy traffic loading, with the IFSTTAR accelerated pavement testing facility. The evolution of bio-materials recycled asphalt mixture characteristics, …

The aim of this paper is to present new proje…

Tectonic evolution of the Sicilian Thrust System (central Mediterranean)

2012

The Sicilian Thrust System (STS) is a south-verging (Africa-verging) fold-and-thrust belt including a Mesozoic-Paleogene sedimentary sequence. This thrust stack owes its origin to the deformation of pre-orogenic strata deposited in different palaeogeographic domains belonging to passive margins of the African plate. The STS was deformed during the Neogene, following the closure of the Tethys Ocean and the continental collision between the Sardo-Corso Block and the North Africa margins. The thrust pile was detached from the underlying basement during the Miocene-Pleistocene. The regional-scale structural setting recognized allows us to reconstruct the tectonic evolution of the STS as follows…
