Perceived barriers in the outdoor environment and development of walking difficulties in older people

2012

SIR—Older people with mobility limitations often report more barriers in their outdoor environment than people with intact mobility [1]. However, it is uncertain whether older people perceive their environment as problematic because of their mobility limitations or whether the environmental barriers precede incident mobility limitation, as most studies have been limited to cross-sectional analyses [2–5]. Only a few longitudinal studies have shown that barriers in the outdoor environment, such as poor street conditions, poor lighting and heavy traffic, increase the risk for overall functional loss [6, 7] and decrease physical activity participation [8]. More knowledge is needed about the cha…

Dynamical masses of the low-mass stellar binary AB Doradus B

2015

Context. ABDoradus is the main system of the ABDoradus moving group. It is a quadruple system formed by two widely separated binaries of pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars: ABDor A/C and ABDor Ba/Bb. The pair ABDor A/C has been extensively studied and its dynamical masses have been determined with high precision, thus making of ABDor C a benchmark for calibrating PMS stellar models. If the orbit and dynamical masses of the pair ABDor Ba/Bb can be determined, they could not only play a similar role to that of ABDor C in calibrating PMS models, but would also help to better understand the dynamics of the whole ABDoradus system. Aims. We aim to determine the individual masses of the pair ABDor Ba/B…

Radio detection of the young binary HD 160934

2013

Precise determination of dynamical masses of pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars is essential to calibrate stellar evolution models that are widely used to derive theoretical masses of young low-mass objects. Binary stars in young, nearby loose associations are particularly good candidates for this calibration since all members share a common age. Interestingly, some of these young binaries present a persistent and compact radio emission, which makes them excellent targets for astrometric VLBI studies. We aim to monitor the orbital motion of the binary system HD 160934, a member of the AB Doradus moving group. We observed HD 160934 with the Very Large Array and the European VLBI Network at 8.4 an…

Authentic leadership and team climate: testing cross-lagged relationships

2016

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationships between authentic leadership and team climate across 22 months. More specifically, three alternative causation models (normal, reversed, reciprocal) were tested. Design/methodology/approach – The longitudinal study was conducted among 265 Finnish municipal employees (87.5 per cent women, mean age 48.4 years). The participants completed a questionnaire three times: at baseline (T1), about 14 months after baseline (T2) and about eight months after the second questionnaire (T3). Findings – The cross-lagged analyses based on structural equation modelling lent support to the reversed causation model more than the normal causati…

Longitudinal study of age and order of eruption of primary teeth in Indian children

2010

Objective: To determine the chronological eruption parameters of primary teeth in Indian children. Study Design: A longitudinal study consisting of 135 healthy children (74 boys and 61 girls) attending three child health centres in the city of Hyderabad, India were randomly selected and followed from the emergence of the first to the last tooth. Ages and order of tooth eruption were studied for both genders. Results: Boys showed tendency towards earlier eruption for all teeth except maxillary second molar and maxillary/mandibular first molars which erupted earlier in girls. Comparison between maxillary and mandibular showed a tendency to earlier mandibular eruption of central incisors, late…

Multiobjective shape design in a ventilation system with a preference-driven surrogate-assisted evolutionary algorithm

2019

We formulate and solve a real-world shape design optimization problem of an air intake ventilation system in a tractor cabin by using a preference-based surrogate-assisted evolutionary multiobjective optimization algorithm. We are motivated by practical applicability and focus on two main challenges faced by practitioners in industry: 1) meaningful formulation of the optimization problem reflecting the needs of a decision maker and 2) finding a desirable solution based on a decision maker’s preferences when solving a problem with computationally expensive function evaluations. For the first challenge, we describe the procedure of modelling a component in the air intake ventilation system wi…

Constraining the nonstandard interaction parameters in long baseline neutrino experiments

2016

In this article we investigate the prospects for probing the strength of the possible non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI) in long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. We find that these experiments are sensitive to NSI couplings down to the level of 0.01-0.1 depending on the oscillation channel and the baseline length, as well as on the detector's fiducial mass. We also investigate the interference of the leptonic CP angle $\delta_{CP}$ with the constraining of the NSI couplings. It is found that the interference is strong in the case of the $\nu_{e}\leftrightarrow\nu_{\mu}$ and $\nu_{e}\leftrightarrow\nu_{\tau}$ transitions but not significant in other transitions. In our numeri…

Change of COPD maintenance medication over two years in a large real life cohort: The DACCORD study

2016

Introduction Database studies suggest a steady intensification of COPD maintenance medication, with the majority of patients eventually receiving a LABA/LAMA/ICS combination. However, such studies include generally only data on medication use. Here, we analysed data from the ongoing, non-interventional, observational DACCORD study to determine whether there was a correlation between baseline GOLD 2011 category and change in medication use over 2 years. Methods This abstract presents data on medication use at baseline and at 1 and 2 years, by baseline GOLD 2011 category (A,B,C and D with symptoms evaluated using the COPD Assessment Test). Results 3315 patients with COPD have completed the 2 …

Deceleration in the Expansion of SN 1993J

1997

A rarity among supernova, SN 1993J in M81 can be studied with high spatial resolution. Its radio power and distance permit VLBI observations to monitor the expansion of its angular structure. This radio structure was previously revealed to be shell-like and to be undergoing a self-similar expansion at a constant rate. From VLBI observations at the wavelengths of 3.6 and 6 cm in the period 6 to 42 months after explosion, we have discovered that the expansion is decelerating. Our measurement of this deceleration yields estimates of the density profiles of the supernova ejecta and circumstellar material in standard supernova explosion models.
