Degradation of the minor Fusarium mycotoxin beauvericin by intracellular enzymes of Saccharomyces cerevisiae

2013

Abstract Beauvericin (BEA) is a cyclic depsipeptide with antibiotic and insecticidal effects. It was discovered for the first time from the fungus Beauveria bassiana , but more significantly, is produced by several Fusarium strains, and considered a contaminant of several cereals like corn, wheat and barley. This study investigated the degradation of BEA by intracellular raw enzymes of four strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae , named LO9, YE5, A34, and A17. The BEA at 25 mg/kg in a model solution and in corn flour was co-incubated with the raw enzymes from the four yeast strains, respectively. The reduction of BEA was evaluated using liquid chromatography coupled to a diode array detector (…

Mitigation of enniatins in edible fish tissues by thermal processes and identification of degradation products.

2017

Emerging mycotoxins, such as enniatins and beauvericin, are common contaminants in vegetal matrices, but recently, the occurrence of mycotoxins in foodstuffs from animal origin has been also reported as they can be present in edible tissues of animals fed with contaminated feedstuffs. Sea bass, sea bream, Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout from aquaculture analyzed in the present survey showed contamination by emerging Fusarium mycotoxins enniatins (ENs). ENs were extracted from raw and cooked fish with acetonitrile and analyzed by Liquid Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry. In this study, the stability of ENs was evaluated during food processing by the application of different cooki…

Genetic diversity and local population structure in Ambrosina bassii (Araceae, Ambrosineae), a Mediterranean relict species

2009

The effects of habitat fragmentation on the genetic structure of Ambrosina bassii are analyzed. The species, whose reproductive biology is mostly unknown, is the only representative of its genus and tribe and it is endemic to the central Mediterranean area. The selected study area was the island of Sicily, in which wild populations show a wide morphological variability and ecological amplitude. Patterns of within- and among-population genetic diversity in eleven Sicilian populations, occurring in six disjunct areas, were examined by means of allozyme electrophoresis. High levels of genetic diversity were found as shown by the mean expected heterozygosity (He ¼ 0.263), the percentage of poly…

Nutritional Characterization of Sea Bass Processing By-Products

2020

The consumption of functional foods and nutraceuticals is gaining more importance in modern society. The exploration of alternative sources and the utilization of by-products coming from the food industry are gaining more importance. The present study aimed to characterize the nutritional value and potential use of sea bass by-products as a source of high-added-value compounds for the development of supplements. The chemical composition (moisture, protein, fat, and ash contents) and profiles of amino acids (high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a scanning fluorescence detector), fatty acids (gas chromatography coupled to a flame ionization detector), and minerals (inductively co…

A comparative epizootiologic study of the two fish-pathogenic serovars ofVibrio vulnificusbiotype 2

2010

Vibrio vulnificus biotype 2 is subdivided into two main serovars, serovar E, able to infect fish and humans, and serovar A, only virulent for fish. Serovar E emerged in 1976 as the causative agent of a haemorrhagic septicaemia (warm-water vibriosis) affecting eels cultured in brackish water. Serovar A emerged in 2000 in freshwater-cultured eels vaccinated against serovar E, causing warm-water vibriosis with fish showing a haemorrhagic intestine as the main differential sign. The aim of the present work was to compare the disease caused by both serovars in terms of transmission routes, portals of entry and host range. Results of bath, patch-contact and oral-anal challenges demonstrated that …

About the Ambassador Vich Palace s distribution and some thoughts on its patio

2019
