Time-to-event analysis of mastitis at first-lactation in Valle del Belice ewes

2007

A time-to-event study for mastitis at first-lactation in Valle del Belice ewes was conducted, using survival analysis with an animal model. The goals were to evaluate the effect of lambing season and level of milk production on the time from lambing to the day when a ewe experienced a test-day with a recorded SCC greater than or equal to 750,000 cells/ml, and to estimate, for this trait, its heritability and the percentage of variation explained by the flock-year of lambing effect. A dataset with 2468 first-lactation records, collected from 1998 to 2003 in Valle del Belice ewes allocated in 17 flocks, was used. The Cox model used included lambing season and total milk yield adjusted for lac…

A New Technique for Vibration-Based Diagnostics of Fatigued Structures Based on Damage Pattern Recognition via Minimization of Misclassification Prob…

2017

Vibration-based diagnostics provide various methods to detect, locate, and characterize damage in structural and mechanical systems by examining changes in measured vibration response. Research in vibration-based damage recognition has been rapidly expanding over the last few years. The basic idea behind this technology is that modal parameters (notably frequencies, mode shapes, and modal damping) are functions of the physical properties of the structure (mass, damping, and stiffness). Therefore, changes in the physical properties will cause detectable changes in the modal properties. In investigations, many techniques were applied to recognize damage in structural and mechanical systems, b…

Do categorical representations modulate early automatic visual processing? A visual mismatch-negativity study.

2021

Perceptual categorization is an important cognitive function. In the auditory domain, categorization already occurs within the first 200 ms of information processing, as indexed by the mismatch negativity. Here, we assessed the characteristics of the visual mismatch negativity (vMMN) elicited during the categorization of previously unknown visual stimuli. To examine this, we used five-dot patterns with characteristics that allow for the formation of categories through rotation and reflection but not through other physical properties. To assess whether or not between-category and within-category vMMN differ in amplitude, the data was analyzed with the Bayesian approach. We observed that both…

ELM Regularized Method for Classification Problems

2016

Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) is a recently proposed algorithm, efficient and fast for learning the parameters of single layer neural structures. One of the main problems of this algorithm is to choose the optimal architecture for a given problem solution. To solve this limitation several solutions have been proposed in the literature, including the regularization of the structure. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are no works where such adjustment is applied to classification problems in the presence of a non-linearity in the output; all published works tackle modelling or regression problems. Our proposal has been applied to a series of standard databases for the evaluation o…

A BMA Analysis to Assess the Urbanization and Climate Change Impact on Urban Watershed Runoff

2016

Abstract A reliable planning of urban drainage systems aimed at the mitigation of flooding, should take into account the possible change over time of impervious cover in the urban watershed and of the climate features. The present study proposes a methodology to analyze the changing in runoff response for a urban watershed accounting several plausible future states of new urbanization and climate. To this aim, several models simulating the evolution scenario of impervious watershed area and of climate change were adopted. However, it is known that an evolution scenario represents only one of all possible occurrence and it is not necessary the true future state, therefore it is needed to fin…

Detection of Internet robots using a Bayesian approach

2015

A large part of Web traffic on e-commerce sites is generated not by human users but by Internet robots: search engine crawlers, shopping bots, hacking bots, etc. In practice, not all robots, especially the malicious ones, disclose their identities to a Web server and thus there is a need to develop methods for their detection and identification. This paper proposes the application of a Bayesian approach to robot detection based on characteristics of user sessions. The method is applied to the Web traffic from a real e-commerce site. Results show that the classification model based on the cluster analysis with the Ward's method and the weighted Euclidean metric is very effective in robot det…

Non-Technological Aspects on Web Searching Success

2008

This paper studies the influence of social, cultural and emotional background of typical Web users into the web searching process. Several variables, describing such aspects, are represented and statistically analyzed with well known clustering and classifying algorithms such, as COBWEB, J48, Bayes classification, and Correspondence analysis. Results indicate that the efficiency of the complete process of Information Retrieval will not be fully understood without considering subjectivity and personality facts.

Analysis and modeling of wind directions time series

2013

This work aims at studying some aspects of wind directions in Italy and supplying appropriate models. A comparison is presented between independent mixture and Hidden Markov models, which seem to be appropriate as far as the series we studied.

Isolating Wine Yeasts that are Specific to the Apold Region and Identifying them through RFLP Genetic Methods

2015

The present study aims at isolating, identifying and selecting autochthonous wine yeast strains with a view to establish a crop bank specific to the Apold area. 569 wine yeast strains were isolated during the alcoholic fermentation of must from the Apold area, 458 were identified through cultural methods and with the help of the API 20 C AUX test (Biomeriux, France). Six yeast strains (A87, A169, A296, A314, A132 and A413) were genetically identified through the PCR-ITS RFLP method of the 5.8S-ITS segment; the resulting four strains were Saccharomyces cerevisiae - A87, A169, A296, A314 - and two Saccharomyces bayanus strains - A132 și A413. The strains we identified constitute a base for t…
