Can bayesian models play a role in dental caries epidemiology? Evidence from an application to the BELCAP data set

Objectives The aim of this study was to show the potential of Bayesian analysis in statistical modelling of dental caries data. Because of the bounded nature of the dmft (DMFT) index, zero-inflated binomial (ZIB) and beta-binomial (ZIBB) models were considered. Bayesian model averaging and weighted-average least squares: Equivariance, stability, and numerical issues

In this article, we describe the estimation of linear regression models with uncertainty about the choice of the explanatory variables. We introduce the Stata commands bma and wals, which implement, respectively, the exact Bayesian model-averaging estimator and the weighted-average least-squares estimator developed by Magnus, Powell, and Prüfer (2010, Journal of Econometrics 154: 139–153). Unlike standard pretest estimators that are based on some preliminary diagnostic test, these model-averaging estimators provide a coherent way of making inference on the regression parameters of interest by taking into account the uncertainty due to both the estimation and the model selection steps. We consider importance sampling (IS) type weighted estimators based on Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) targeting an approximate marginal of the target distribution. In the context of Bayesian latent variable models, the MCMC typically operates on the hyperparameters, and the subsequent weighting may be based on IS or sequential Monte Carlo (SMC), but allows for multilevel techniques as well. One of the major topics in primate evolution is the phylogenetic position of the bizarre Daubentonia madagascariensis (DMA, aye-aye). The principal points that have been discussed for many decades are whether the aye-aye is: (i) the sister group of primates; (ii) the sister group of strepsirhines; or (iii) the sister group of lemurs. Bayesian analysis of a Gibbs hard-core point pattern model with varying repulsion range

A Bayesian solution is suggested for the modelling of spatial point patterns with inhomogeneous hard-core radius using Gaussian processes in the regularization. The key observation is that a straightforward use of the finite Gibbs hard-core process likelihood together with a log-Gaussian random field prior does not work without penalisation towards high local packing density. Instead, a nearest neighbour Gibbs process likelihood is used. This approach to hard-core inhomogeneity is an alternative to the transformation inhomogeneous hard-core modelling. On implementation of the Gibbs sampler for estimating the accuracy of multiple diagnostic tests

Implementation of the Gibbs sampler for estimating the accuracy of multiple binary diagnostic tests in one population has been investigated. This method, proposed by Joseph, Gyorkos and Coupal, makes use of a Bayesian approach and is used in the absence of a gold standard to estimate the prevalence, the sensitivity and specificity of medical diagnostic tests. The expressions that allow this method to be implemented for an arbitrary number of tests are given.
