Learning Bayesian Metanetworks from Data with Multilevel Uncertainty
2006
Managing knowledge by maintaining it according to dynamic context is among the basic abilities of a knowledge-based system. The two main challenges in managing context in Bayesian networks are the introduction of contextual (in)dependence and Bayesian multinets. We are presenting one possible implementation of a context sensitive Bayesian multinet-the Bayesian Metanetwork, which implies that interoperability between component Bayesian networks (valid in different contexts) can be also modelled by another Bayesian network. The general concepts and two kinds of such Metanetwork models are considered. The main focus of this paper is learning procedure for Bayesian Metanetworks.
Natural induction: An objective bayesian approach
2009
The statistical analysis of a sample taken from a finite population is a classic problem for which no generally accepted objective Bayesian results seem to exist. Bayesian solutions to this problem may be very sensitive to the choice of the prior, and there is no consensus as to the appropriate prior to use.
A Bayesian spatio‐temporal analysis of markets during the Finnish 1860s famine
2022
We develop a Bayesian spatio-temporal model to study pre-industrial grain market integration during the Finnish famine of the 1860s. Our model takes into account several problematic features often present when analysing multiple spatially interdependent time series. For example, compared with the error correction methodology commonly applied in econometrics, our approach allows simultaneous modelling of multiple interdependent time series avoiding cumbersome statistical testing needed to predetermine the market leader as a point of reference. Furthermore, introducing a flexible spatio-temporal structure enables analysing detailed regional and temporal dynamics of the market mechanisms. Appl…
Insights into the derivative-based method for nonlinear mediation models
2022
Associational mediation analysis has generally relied on the linearity of models to estimate the indirect effect as a product of regression coefficients. Very few examples of generalisations to nonlinear settings have been proposed, including a derivative-based method that, however, is far from being widely spread among scholars. In this paper, we clarify some aspects of such an approach to nonlinear mediation models, which have not been addressed by the previous literature. In addition, we run a simulation study to compare confidence intervals for the indirect effect obtained through different approaches.

Identifying territories using presence-only citizen science data : An application to the Finnish wolf population
2022
Citizens, community groups and local institutions participate in voluntary biological monitoring of population status and trends by providing species data e.g. for regulations and conservation. Sophisticated statistical methods are required to unlock the potential of such data in the assessment of wildlife populations. We develop a statistical modelling framework for identifying territories based on presence-only citizen science data. The framework can be used to jointly estimate the number of active animal territories and their locations in time. Our approach is based on a data generating model which consists of a dynamic submodel for the appearance/removal of territories and an observatio…
