CERN's longest serving experimental facility

2004

The On-Line Isotope Separator ISOLDE has operated continuously at CERN since 1967. Today ISOLDE and its Post accelerator REX-ISOLDE, dedicated to the production of a large variety of radioactive ion beams with energies from 1 keV/u up to 3.1 MeV/u, are used for a great number of different experiments in the fields of nuclear and atomic physics, nuclear astrophysics, material physics and life sciences. The facility, originally located at the CERNs first accelerator Synchrocyclotron (SC), has been located at the Proton-Synchrotron Booster (PSB) since 1992. Long and outstanding operation of ISOLDE has had important impact on the evolution of nuclear physics and its applications. ISOLDE has bee…

Topologically Protected Twist Edge States for a Resonant Mechanical Laser-Beam Scanner

2019

We design a one-dimensional chain of two different alternating three-dimensional elastic chiral unit cells. The chain’s topological band gap, a result of the alternation of unit cells combined with their chirality and an effective mirror symmetry, guarantees a protected edge state, corresponding to a localized twist mode with an eigenfrequency inside the one-dimensional band gap. A small axial modulation at the one end of the beam can excite this resonant twist mode at the other end of the beam, via evanescent modes in the gap. The topological robustness of the edge state allows us to add a micromirror to the other end of the beam, turning the arrangement into a resonant mechanical laser-be…

Two-photon spectroscopy of mercury and velocity-selective double resonances

2009

Two-photon laser spectroscopy of the $6\text{ }{^{1}S}_{0}\ensuremath{-}7\text{ }{^{1}S}_{0}$ transition in mercury has been performed using two copropagating continuous-wave laser beams. One laser beam is at 254 nm wavelength and can be tuned to the $6\text{ }{^{1}S}_{0}\ensuremath{-}6\text{ }{^{3}P}_{1}$ resonance. The other laser beam is at 408 nm. Two very different regimes can be distinguished, one far off resonance and one near resonance with the one-photon resonance. A resonance which is not Doppler broadened has been observed for low Rabi frequencies. This velocity-selective double resonance in a three-level ladder system is analogous to the dark resonance in three-level $\ensuremat…

Experimental evidence of the real multimode nature of geometric parametric instability

2020

We show experimentally that geometric parametric instability in graded-index multimode fibers is composed by several multimode spectral components. The experimental observation is obtained by using a new 3D technique of high-resolution spatial and spectral analysis.

Cluster-transfer reactions with radioactive beams: A spectroscopic tool for neutron-rich nuclei

2015

An exploratory experiment performed at REX-ISOLDE to investigate cluster-transfer reactions with radioactive beams in inverse kinematics is presented. The aim of the experiment was to test the potential of cluster-transfer reactions at the Coulomb barrier as a mechanism to explore the structure of exotic neutron-rich nuclei. The reactions Li7(Rb98,αxn) and Li7(Rb98,txn) were studied through particle-γ coincidence measurements, and the results are presented in terms of the observed excitation energies and spins. Moreover, the reaction mechanism is qualitatively discussed as a transfer of a clusterlike particle within a distorted-wave Born approximation framework. The results indicate that cl…

Background Rejection of Charged Particles in the Simbol-X Telescope: Preliminary Study of Protons Scattering

2009

X-ray telescopes equipped with focusing optics in high eccentric orbit, as e.g. Newton-XMM and Chandra, showed a degradation of the detector performance and an important increase of the noise due to soft protons with energy between a few tens of keV and a few MeV, that are focused on the detector through the mirror module. It should be noted that the focusing of the protons by Wolter optics was an unexpected phenomenon. In Simbol-X a magnetic diverter will be implemented to deflect protons, in order to reduce the flux of charged particles impinging upon the focal plane. Obviously the design of the diverter should take into consideration the protons distribution at the exit of the mirror mod…

Developments on the 1.4 MeV/u Pulsed Gas Stripper Cell

2017

The GSI UNILAC in combination with SIS18 will serve as a high-current, heavy-ion injector for the FAIR facility. It must meet high demands in terms of beam brilliance at a low duty factor. As part of an UNILAC upgrade program dedicated to FAIR, a new pulsed gas stripper cell was developed, aiming for increased beam intensities inside the post-stripper. The pulsed gas injection is synchronized with the beam pulse timing, enabling a highly-demanded, increased gas density. First tests using uranium beams on a hydrogen target showed a 60%-increased stripping efficiency into the desired 28+ charge state. In 2015, the setup was improved to be able to deliver increased target thicknesses and enhan…
