BORDERS AND BORDER CROSSING BETWEEN ART WORLDS. Successful attempts and epic failures to enter new domains in recent British art

2016

The paper attempts to answer, whether it is possible for successful artists in one specific sector to access the domain of another artistic field at their free will. In doing so, this contribution analyses the possible existence of borders and gatekeepers between different art worlds. The aim is not just finding or defining boundaries between art fields, but rather understanding, if boundaries can be pierced through, as well as the conditions that might hinder acceptance. Moving from an art theoretical and philosophical perspective, the present paper will discuss the thesis of Pierre Bourdieu, Howard Becker, Berys Gaut and Joseph Margolis on boundary conditions in the arts. Subsequently the…

Influence of anxiety and anesthetic vasoconstrictors upon hemodynamic parameters during dental procedures in controlled hypertensive and non-hyperten…

2020

Background To determine the influence of dental anxiety and the vasoconstrictor used in local anesthesia upon different hemodynamic parameters - systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), heart rate (HR) and peripheral oxygen saturation (SatO2) - during dental extraction and oral hygiene. The safety of local anesthesia with vasoconstrictor in patients with medically controlled hypertension was also assessed. Material and methods A total of 159 patients were divided into two groups according to the dental treatment received: tooth extraction (n = 106) and oral hygiene (n = 53). The hemodynamic parameters (SBP, DBP, HR and SatO2) were recorded throughout dental treatment. Patient anxi…

Enhanced thermoelectric performance of PEDOT with different counter-ions optimized by chemical reduction

2014

This work reports on the synthesis of the intrinsically conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) doped with several counter-ions, ClO4, PF6 and bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (BTFMSI), by electro-polymerization and its thermoelectric properties. We show that, depending on the counter-ion size, the thermoelectric efficiency of PEDOT can be increased up to two orders of magnitude. A further chemical reduction with hydrazine optimizes the power factor (PF). By changing the counter-ions, we were able to increase the electrical conductivity (σ) of PEDOT by a factor of three, while the Seebeck coefficient remains at the same order of magnitude in the three polymers. The best…

New conducting radical salts based upon Keggin-type polyoxometalates and perylene

2004

Three new radical salts, Per6[PMo12O40]·CH2Cl2 (1), Per6[PMo12O40]·CH3CN (2), and Per9(NBu4)4[SiW12O40]2 (3) (Per = perylene), have been synthesised and their electrical and magnetic properties characterised. These three salts are diamagnetic and they behave as semiconductors with room temperature conductivities of 69, 3.6 and 0.85 S cm−1. While salt 2 presents hole-type conduction and 3 exhibits electron-dominated electrical transport properties, salt 1 shows at 150 K an abrupt change in the thermal dependence of the electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient suggesting a phase transition.

La traumatographie beckettienne

2018

The trauma of Beckett’s dramatic characters consists first of all of greater and greater disability of aging body, and of persvasive emptiness. In an indeterminated space characterized by catastrophy, man’s life was reduced to agony, being relieved by irony and poetry.

Thermoelectrics: From history, a window to the future

2019

Thermoelectricity offers a sustainable path to recover and convert waste heat into readily available electric energy, and has been studied for more than two centuries. From the controversy between Galvani and Volta on the Animal Electricity, dating back to the end of the XVIII century and anticipating Seebeck’s observations, the understanding of the physical mechanisms evolved along with the development of the technology. In the XIX century Ørsted clarified some of the earliest observations of the thermoelectric phenomenon and proposed the first thermoelectric pile, while it was only after the studies on thermodynamics by Thomson, and Rayleigh’s suggestion to exploit the Seebeck effect for …

Electrochemical Synthesis of an Organic Thermoelectric Power Generator.

2020

[EN] Energy harvesting through residual heat is considered one of the most promising ways to power wearable devices. In this work, thermoelectric textiles were prepared by coating the fabrics, first with multiple-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by using the layer-by-layer technique and second with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) deposited by electrochemical polymerization. Sodium deoxycholate and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) were used as stabilizers to prepare the aqueous dispersions of MWCNTs. The electrochemical deposition of PEDOT on the MWCNT-coated fabric was carried out in a three-electrode electrochemical cell. The polymerization of PEDOT on the fabric increased the…

Mixed Epidermal Cell Lymphocyte Reaction: HLA-DR+ Cells Exhibit a Greater Immunostimulatory Activity than CD1a+ Cells

1995

Induction and expression of immunity depends upon processing and presentation of antigens to T-cells by bone marrow derived HLA-DR+ antigen presenting cells (APC). In the induction of immunity to cutaneous antigens, the initial stages of this process begin within the skin itself, and both epidermis and dermis contain bone-marrow derived cells that have the capability of processing and presenting antigens. In normal epidermis, HLA-DR expression is believed to be confined to Langerhans cells with Birbeck granules and indeterminate cells without Birbeck granules. In diseased skin, particularly the inflammatory dermatoses, HLA-DR is commonly expressed by keratinocytes and has been related to th…

Vieras minä : abjekti Helene Schjerfbeckin ja Åke Mattaksen omakuvissa

2015
