A longitudinal study of sleep disorders in early-stage chronic kidney disease

Few studies have addressed the problem of sleep disturbances in patients with early-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD). A total of 220 patients newly diagnosed with CKD and 220 patients newly diagnosed with chronic hepatitis C were studied within 1 month from the diagnosis. They were evaluated by using the Charlson Comorbidity Index, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Beck Depression Inventory. Patients with CKD were followed up for 4 years. Sleep disturbances affected 59.5% of patients with chronic hepatitis C and 84.6% of patients with CKD. Sleeping disorders that were severe and peculiar in early CKD improved significantly over time. Background: Depressive symptoms are a major complaint reported by cancer patients. Somatic and affective symptoms can contribute to depression. Patients and methods: We investigated the prevalence of somatic and affective depressive symptoms with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) in 213 hospitalized cancer patients prior to the start of chemotherapy. Results: Seventeen of 213 patients (8%) were screened positive for major depression; 40 (19%) had mild to moderate depressive symptoms. Abstract Background Since the current epidemiology of depression is not well documented in Latin America, we conducted a community-based survey study in Argentina. Methods The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and a general health questionnaire were completed by 1335 adult participants, representing most of the neighborhoods of Buenos Aires. Results Prevalence of high total BDI scores (≥ 13) indicating probable current clinically significant depression was 20.0% (women: 20.6%; men: 19.6%).
