Growth pattern of underlithified strata during thrust-related folding

2004

Abstract Asymmetric anticlines with overturned or steeply dipping forelimbs and gently dipping backlimbs are generally interpreted as thrust-related folds. Fold asymmetry occurs as a consequence of forelimb rotation. If deformation takes place in environments dominated by submarine sedimentation, the limbs coincide with the slope (depositional surface) and rotation reflects slope steepening. If folds are nucleated in poorly or unlithified deposits, growth geometry also depends on the properties of the media, such as cohesion and the angle of internal friction. For cohesionless deposits, the tilting of the slope influences the equilibrium of the soft sediments, resulting in gravity-driven fl…

Positionless aspect based sentiment analysis using attention mechanism.

2021

Abstract Aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) aims at identifying fine-grained polarity of opinion associated with a given aspect word. Several existing articles demonstrated promising ABSA accuracy using positional embedding to show the relationship between an aspect word and its context. In most cases, the positional embedding depends on the distance between the aspect word and the remaining words in the context, known as the position index sequence. However, these techniques usually employ both complex preprocessing approaches with additional trainable positional embedding and complex architectures to obtain the state-of-the-art performance. In this paper, we simplify preprocessing by …

Testing Independence: A New Approach

2000

In time series analysis and modelling, testing for independence allows us to determine if the estimated model is correctly specified. In this work, we present a very simple method to test for serial independence, based on the two-dimensional embedding vectors (the so-called “2-histories”), and we analyse the power and size of such a procedure against a wide set of linear and nonlinear alternatives.

EMBER—Embedding Multiple Molecular Fingerprints for Virtual Screening

2022

In recent years, the debate in the field of applications of Deep Learning to Virtual Screening has focused on the use of neural embeddings with respect to classical descriptors in order to encode both structural and physical properties of ligands and/or targets. The attention on embeddings with the increasing use of Graph Neural Networks aimed at overcoming molecular fingerprints that are short range embeddings for atomic neighborhoods. Here, we present EMBER, a novel molecular embedding made by seven molecular fingerprints arranged as different “spectra” to describe the same molecule, and we prove its effectiveness by using deep convolutional architecture that assesses ligands&…

Deep Metric Learning for Histopathological Image Classification

2022

Neural networks demonstrated to be effective in multiple classification tasks with performances that are similar to human capabilities. Notwithstanding, the viability of the application of this kind of tool in real cases passes through the possibility to interpret the provided results and let the human operator take his decision according to the information that is provided. This aspect is much more evident when the field of application is bound to people's health as for biomed-ical image classification. We propose for the classification of histopathological images a convolutional neural network that, through metric learning, learns a representation that gathers in homogeneous clusters the …

The mosaic of the Frigidarium of “Villa Bonanno” in Palermo: mineralogical and petrographic analyses for in situ conservation and restoration interve…

2017

The topic of this study was the mineralogical and petrographic characterization of bedding mortars (made of different layers) and tesserae of Roman age (3rd Century A.D.), taken from the mosaic of the Frigidarium of “Villa Bonanno”, brought to light by archaeological excavations conducted in the historical centre of Palermo. The collected samples have been analysed by thin-section optical microscopy (PLM), and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS). The study was aimed to define the “recipe” (composition of temper and binder, temper size distribution, temper/binder ratio), in order to assess the provenance of raw materials (supply site/area) and t…

Anam-Net: Anamorphic Depth Embedding-Based Lightweight CNN for Segmentation of Anomalies in COVID-19 Chest CT Images.

2021

Chest computed tomography (CT) imaging has become indispensable for staging and managing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and current evaluation of anomalies/abnormalities associated with COVID-19 has been performed majorly by the visual score. The development of automated methods for quantifying COVID-19 abnormalities in these CT images is invaluable to clinicians. The hallmark of COVID-19 in chest CT images is the presence of ground-glass opacities in the lung region, which are tedious to segment manually. We propose anamorphic depth embedding-based lightweight CNN, called Anam-Net, to segment anomalies in COVID-19 chest CT images. The proposed Anam-Net has 7.8 times fewer parameters …

Analysis of a complex high-strain zone at Cap de Creus, Spain

1997

Abstract The structural analysis of a high-strain zone developed in medium- to high-grade metamorphic micaschists from the Cap de Creus area, Spain provides an example of the complex relationships between geometry, strain and kinematics to be found in deep crustal shear zones. This high-strain zone is composed of E-W trending structural domains characterized by different strain intensities and associated with syntectonic emplacement of pegmatite dykes. The main phase of deformation discussed here, D2, affects steeply dipping bedding, boudinaged quartz veins and S1 developed parallel to bedding. D2 deformation of these features and of syn-D2 pegmatite dykes gives rise to fold/boudin structur…

Directed random walk on the backbone of an oriented percolation cluster

2012

We consider a directed random walk on the backbone of the infinite cluster generated by supercritical oriented percolation, or equivalently the space-time embedding of the ``ancestral lineage'' of an individual in the stationary discrete-time contact process. We prove a law of large numbers and an annealed central limit theorem (i.e., averaged over the realisations of the cluster) using a regeneration approach. Furthermore, we obtain a quenched central limit theorem (i.e.\ for almost any realisation of the cluster) via an analysis of joint renewals of two independent walks on the same cluster.

Weighted samples, kernel density estimators and convergence

2003

This note extends the standard kernel density estimator to the case of weighted samples in several ways. In the first place I consider the obvious extension by substituting the simple sum in the definition of the estimator by a weighted sum, but I also consider other alternatives of introducing weights, based on adaptive kernel density estimators, and consider the weights as indicators of the informational content of the observations and in this sense as signals of the local density of the data. All these ideas are shown using the Penn World Table in the context of the macroeconomic convergence issue.
