Mediterranean Diet and Gene-Mediterranean Diet Interactions in Determining Intermediate Cardiovascular Disease Phenotypes
2012
According to European statistics, 2008 for CVD, the leading causes of death in Europe are coronary heart disease and stroke. In Europe, deaths from these diseases are 4.3 million each year. Nearly half (48%) of all deaths are due to CVD (54% of deaths in women and 43% of deaths in men). Regional variations in cardiovascular mortality have been observed both between and within countries in Europe (Sans et al., 1997; Muller et al., 2004). Coronary heart disease mortality patterns showed a clear north–east to south–west gradient in CVD mortality (1990–1992; 45–74 years age-adjusted) with the lowest rates for both men and women in France, Spain, Switzerland, and Italy (Sans et al., 1997). Many …
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall: Machine Predictions and Self-Fulfilling Prophecies
2021
We show that disclosing machine predictions to affected parties can trigger self-fulfilling prophecies. In an investment game, we experimentally vary investors’ and recipients’ access to a machine prediction about recipients’ likelihood to pay back an investment. Recipients who privately learn about an incorrect machine prediction alter their behavior in the direction of the prediction. Furthermore, when recipients learn that an investor has disregarded a machine prediction of no-repayment, this further lowers the repayment amount. We interpret these findings as evidence that transparency regarding machine predictions can alter recipients’ beliefs about what kind of person they are and what…
Complex Adaptive Systems and Agent-Based Modelling
2015
In a labour–education market system, there are many individuals and firms with adaptive behaviour. As we have seen in the previous chapter, networks are prevalent in LEMS and play an important role in many decisions of its actors. Thus, LEMS can be analysed as a complex adaptive system (CAS). Agent-based modelling (ABM) is typically used for such purposes, and the next chapter will dig into details of various ways of applying ABM in modelling LEMS. To be ready for it, we first have to understand the motivation behind and the details of this method. This is what will be discussed here.
Water retention behaviour and microstructural evolution of MX-80 bentonite during wetting and drying cycles
2014
MX-80 bentonite used in engineered barrier systems would be subjected to wetting and drying cycles. To assess the response of the material under such circumstances, a comprehensive experimental characterisation of the water retention behaviour of compacted MX-80 granular bentonite was performed in this study. A new methodology is proposed to investigate this behaviour under a constant volume condition for specimens prepared at different dry densities. The material was subjected to different hydraulic paths, including cyclic variations of the water content. As a result, an irreversible modification of the retention behaviour was observed when the material approached a fully saturated state …

How perceived security appears in the commercialisation of internet banking
2005
Security has been widely recognised as one of the main barriers to the adoption of internet innovation. Many studies suggest that firms operating on the internet must first convince their customers about the security of internet as a medium. This paper presents empirical evidence that Finnish internet customers do not consider internet banking as unsecured as past literature suggests. In fact, our research findings suggest that Finnish internet banking services are considered secured in all our target groups, which present a vast sample of today's Finnish internet customers. However, mobile banking customers seem to have somewhat more security concerns than internet banking customers. Our e…
On the moving load problem in Euler–Bernoulli uniform beams with viscoelastic supports and joints
2016
This paper concerns the vibration response under moving loads of Euler–Bernoulli uniform beams with translational supports and rotational joints, featuring Kelvin–Voigt viscoelastic behaviour. Using the theory of generalized functions to handle the discontinuities of the response variables at the support/joint locations, exact beam modes are obtained from a characteristic equation built as determinant of a (Formula presented.) matrix, for any number of supports/joints. Based on pertinent orthogonality conditions for the deflection modes, the response under moving loads is built in the time domain by modal superposition. Remarkably, all response variables are built in a closed analytical for…

Taking advantage of the functional synergism between carbon nanotubes and graphene nanoplatelets to obtain polypropylene-based nanocomposites with en…
2020
Carbon Nanotubes (CNT) and Graphene Nanoplatelets (GNP) were incorporated in Polypropylene (PP) as single filler (CNT=1, 2 and 4 %wt. and GNP=2, 4, and 6 %wt.) and in hybrid form (CNT:GNP weight ratio 2:2, 2:4 and 4:2) using a prototype miniature Twin Screw Extruder (TSE) coupled with a double slit rheological die, in order to assess in-line the extent of nanofiller dispersion and to deliver PP-based nanocomposites with enhanced thermo-oxidative stability. The morphological, electrical and mechanical properties, as well as the resistance to thermal and photo degradation of the composites containing single nanofillers (PP/CNT and PP/GNP) were compared with those of hybrid PP based nanocompos…

2023
The Zoology and Animal Ecology section of the conference covers a broad range of topics, ranging from the distribution of animal species and the different aspects of species' interactions with the environment to animal genetics and physiology, including behaviour, conservation and other topics where study objects are animals.
