A novel L1CAM mutation in a fetus detected by prenatal diagnosis

2010

X-linked hydrocephalus is due to mutations in the L1 neuronal cell adhesion molecule (L1CAM) gene. L1 protein plays a key role in neurite outgrowth, axonal guidance, and pathfinding during the development of the nervous system. We report on a familial case diagnosed by prenatal ultrasonographic examination, with cerebellar hypoplasia, agenesis of the corpus callosum, and the bilateral overlapping of the second and third fingers of the hand. Sequencing of the L1CAM gene showed a novel missense mutation in exon 14: transition of a guanine to cytosine at position 1777 (c.1777G > C), which led to an amino acid change of alanine to proline at position 593 (Ala593Pro) in the sixth immunoglobulin …

Dall’iperestetica all’anestetica: la negazione dell’umano nella società dell’apparenza

2021

We live in the "society of the image" that obtunds sensitivity and produces indifference. The essay focuses on the obsessive search for a shal…

Bello e Idea nell’estetica del Seicento

2007

The Beautiful and The Idea in 17th-Century Aesthetics In his renowned lecture on the Idea, which he delivered at the Academy of Saint Luke in 1664, Giovan Pietro Bellori asserts the superiority of ideal beauty against the slavish imitation of reality and the unbridled freedom of the imagination. However, an equally important, albeit lesser known, contributor to the formulation of this classicist aesthetic theory is Giovan Battista Agucchi, author of a Treatise on Painting that appeared in fragmentary form in 1646. In this work, Agucchi identifes beauty as the truest and highest aim of painting; he attributes to the artist the power to contemplate the Idea, and confers a profound cognitive v…

Pharmacological heterogeneity of γ-aminobutyric acid receptors during development suggests distinct classes of rat cerebellar granule cells in situ

2001

The gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor (GABA(A)R) represents a ligand-gated Cl(-)-channel assembling as heteropentamere from 19 known subunits. Cerebellar granule cells contain a unique subset, namely the alpha1-, alpha6-, beta2-, gamma2- and delta-subunits. We studied their GABAergic pharmacology in situ using whole-cell patch-clamp recordings in brain slices and a modified Y-tube application system. The distribution of the EC50s for GABA in young (P8-P14) and medium aged animals (P15-P28) could be fitted with the sum of two Gaussian distributions with means of 60 and 185 microM and 27 and 214 microM, respectively. In older animals (P29-P48) the observed homogeneous range of sensitivities fi…

Somatosensory event-related potentials in the rabbit cerebral and cerebellar cortices: a correspondence with mismatch responses in humans.

2001

Somatosensory event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded from the cerebellar (CerCx), somatosensory (SomCx) and visual (VCx) cortices in rabbits in two stimulus conditions. In the oddball condition, airpuffs to two different locations in the rabbit's muzzle corresponded to infrequently presented deviant stimuli (oddball-deviants) interspersed with frequently presented standard stimuli. In the deviant-alone condition, deviants (alone-deviants) were presented without standards. ERPs to oddball-deviants differed significantly from those to standards in CerCx and SomCx, but not in VCx. Furthermore, some of these differences were not found between ERPs to alone-deviants and those to standards…

Alberto Burri dalla pittura all’architettura

2019

2018

Alberto Burri’s Grande Cretto. A most original interpretative hypothesis is proposed here with regard to the extraordinary masterpiece by Alberto Burri (1915-1995), that is to say, the brilliant Grande Cretto, located near Gibellina vecchia (old Gibellina), in Sicily. This work, borrowing from Land Art, constitutes a unicum on the world scale, in terms of its vast size and profound significance. Built in cement over the rubble of the old Sicilian town, devastated by the1968 earthquake, it comprises, at the same time, sculpture, architecture and urban-planning. From an initial reading of the most authoritative critics, therefore, we reinterpret it in accordance with the thinking of Martin He…

Maturation of IgG avidity to individual rubella virus structural proteins.

2001

Background: the structural proteins of rubella virus, the capsid protein C and the envelope glycoproteins E1 and E2 were produced in lepidopteran insect cells using baculovirus expression vectors. The C-terminal ends of the corresponding proteins were fused to a polyhistidine tag for easy and gentle purification by metal ion affinity chromatography. Objectives: to investigate the maturation of natural and vaccinal IgG avidity against individual authentic and recombinant rubella virus (RV) structural proteins. Study design the analysis was carried out using a modified immunoblotting technique where the purified baculovirus-expressed proteins were compared with authentic rubella virus protein…

This paper examines the relationship between the theory of decorum and literary styles according to the rhetorical theory of Hermogenes in the De Oratione libri VII by Antonio Llull and their relationship in the conception of different types and pictorial ideals.
