Toxicity of binary mixtures of Cu, Cr and As to the earthworm Eisenia andrei

2020

AbstractChromated copper arsenate (CCA) mixtures were used in the past for wood preservation, leading to large scale soil contamination. This study aimed at contributing to the risk assessment of CCA-contaminated soils by assessing the toxicity of binary mixtures of copper, chromium and arsenic to the earthworm Eisenia andrei in OECD artificial soil. Mixture effects were related to reference models of Concentration Addition (CA) and Independent Action (IA) using the MIXTOX model, with effects being related to total and available (H2O and 0.01 M CaCl2 extractable) concentrations in the soil. Since only in mixtures with arsenic dose-related mortality occurred (LC50 92.5 mg/kg dry soil), it wa…

An uptake and elimination kinetics approach to assess the bioavailability of chromium, copper, and arsenic to earthworms (Eisenia andrei) in contamin…

2019

The aim of this study was to determine the bioavailability of metals in field soils contaminated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA) mixtures. The uptake and elimination kinetics of chromium, copper, and arsenic were assessed in the earthworm Eisenia andrei exposed to soils from a gradient of CCA wood preservative contamination near Hartola, Finland. In soils contaminated with 1480–1590 mg Cr/kg dry soil, 642–791 mg Cu/kg dry soil, and 850–2810 mg Ag/kg dry soil, uptake and elimination kinetics patterns were similar for Cr and Cu. Both metals were rapidly taken up and rapidly excreted by Eisenia andrei with equilibrium reached within 1 day. The metalloid As, however, showed very slow uptak…

Corrección: una cuestión de estilo

2009

This paper is devoted to ask if Aesthetics today can be considered in the way of Baumgarten and Kant or it can be considered like a way to produce truth and truthfulness. Opposite to the ontological truth (aletheia) and the logic truth (homoisosis) the writer, from a point of view of Aesthetics, propose considering also truth like correctness, orthotés in classical Greek and rectitudo in Latin.

LRRK2 is expressed in areas affected by Parkinson's disease in the adult mouse brain.

2006

The leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) gene was recently found to have multiple mutations that are causative for autosomal dominant inherited Parkinson's disease (PD). Previously, we used Northern blot analysis to show that this gene was expressed in the cerebellum, cerebral cortex, medulla, spinal cord, occipital pole, frontal lobe, temporal lobe and caudate putamen. However, a more comprehensive map of LRRK2 mRNA localization in the central nervous system is still lacking. In this study we have mapped the distribution of the mRNA encoding for LRRK2 using nonradioactive in situ hybridization. We detected a moderate expression of this PD-related gene throughout the adult B2B6 mouse brain.…

The contribution traces the reason for the need to forget as a possibility of overcoming a civil conflict, through a selection of texts that starting from ancient testimonies leads to the reflection of moderns. In this perspective, particular attention is dedicated to the controversy of Seneca the Elder 10, 3

A Novel Chitin-binding Protein from the Vestimentiferan Riftia pachyptila Interacts Specifically with β-Chitin

2001

Abstract A cDNA from Riftia pachyptila was cloned. It encodes a novel 21.3-kDa protein from the worm protective tube, named RCBP (for Riftia chitin-binding protein). On the basis of partial tube-peptide sequences previously obtained, experiments using reverse transcriptase-mediated polymerase chain reaction and rapid amplification of cDNA ends led to the complete cDNA sequence. Analysis of its deduced amino acid sequence shows the presence of two chitin-binding domains. These domains are closely related to type 2 chitin-binding domains that are restricted to the animal kingdom. We showed by affinity assay and immunogold labeling that RCBP is the first protein so far known that binds specifi…

Revision ofHalisiphoniaAllman, 1888 (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa, Hebellidae), with comments on its taxonomic position

2006

The deep‐water genus Halisiphonia is reviewed, based on redescriptions of all available type specimens of its species. The genus includes four valid species, H. arctica, H. galatheae, H. megalotheca, and H. nana, and one species inquirenda, H. spongicola, for which the type could not be located.

Impact of Ag and Co engineered nanoparticles on soil microbial community structure in a soil perturbed by Lumbricus rubellus

2014

Knowledge on the impact of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) on both human and environment health is scarce. Several studies sustain that soil is the environmental compartment designed to be the major recipient of engineered nanoparticles (NPs). With the aim of investigating the impact of commercially relevant NPs on soil functioning, we compared the effect of Ag and Co NPs, as well as cobalt and silver ions, on soil microbial community in the presence of Lumbricus rubellus. Earthworms specimens were placed in a rich‐C soil and fed with horse manure spiked with Ag‐NPs, Co‐NPs, Ag+ and Co2+ for a total amount of 10 mg of single pollutant kg‐1 soil. At the end of acute exposure (4 weeks) to pol…

Emergent Collective Behaviors in a Multi-agent Reinforcement Learning Pedestrian Simulation: A Case Study

2015

In this work, a Multi-agent Reinforcement Learning framework is used to generate simulations of virtual pedestrians groups. The aim is to study the influence of two different learning approaches in the quality of generated simulations. The case of study consists on the simulation of the crossing of two groups of embodied virtual agents inside a narrow corridor. This scenario is a classic experiment inside the pedestrian modeling area, because a collective behavior, specifically the lanes formation, emerges with real pedestrians. The paper studies the influence of different learning algorithms, function approximation approaches, and knowledge transfer mechanisms on performance of learned ped…
