On Lp resolvent estimates for Laplace–Beltrami operators on compact manifolds

2014

In this article we prove Lp estimates for resolvents of Laplace–Beltrami operators on compact Riemannian manifolds, generalizing results of Kenig, Ruiz and Sogge (1987) in the Euclidean case and Shen (2001) for the torus. We follow Sogge (1988) and construct Hadamard's parametrix, then use classical boundedness results on integral operators with oscillatory kernels related to the Carleson and Sjölin condition. Our initial motivation was to obtain Lp Carleman estimates with limiting Carleman weights generalizing those of Jerison and Kenig (1985); we illustrate the pertinence of Lp resolvent estimates by showing the relation with Carleman estimates. Such estimates are useful in the constructi…

Historical Origins of the nine-point conic -- The Contribution of Eugenio Beltrami

2020

In this paper, we examine the evolution of a specific mathematical problem, i.e. the nine-point conic, a generalisation of the nine-point circle due to Steiner. We will follow this evolution from Steiner to the Neapolitan school (Trudi and Battaglini) and finally to the contribution of Beltrami that closed this journey, at least from a mathematical point of view (scholars of elementary geometry, in fact, will continue to resume the problem from the second half of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century). We believe that such evolution may indicate the steady development of the mathematical methods from Euclidean metric to projective, and finally, with Beltrami, with the use of quadrat…

Improved Hölder regularity for strongly elliptic PDEs

2019

We establish surprising improved Schauder regularity properties for solutions to the Leray-Lions divergence type equation in the plane. The results are achieved by studying the nonlinear Beltrami equation and making use of special new relations between these two equations. In particular, we show that solutions to an autonomous Beltrami equation enjoy a quantitative improved degree of H\"older regularity, higher than what is given by the classical exponent $1/K$.

Quantitative uniqueness estimates for pp-Laplace type equations in the plane

2016

Abstract In this article our main concern is to prove the quantitative unique estimates for the p -Laplace equation, 1 p ∞ , with a locally Lipschitz drift in the plane. To be more precise, let u ∈ W l o c 1 , p ( R 2 ) be a nontrivial weak solution to div ( | ∇ u | p − 2 ∇ u ) + W ⋅ ( | ∇ u | p − 2 ∇ u ) = 0  in  R 2 , where W is a locally Lipschitz real vector satisfying ‖ W ‖ L q ( R 2 ) ≤ M for q ≥ max { p , 2 } . Assume that u satisfies certain a priori assumption at 0. For q > max { p , 2 } or q = p > 2 , if ‖ u ‖ L ∞ ( R 2 ) ≤ C 0 , then u satisfies the following asymptotic estimates at R ≫ 1 inf | z 0 | = R sup | z − z 0 | 1 | u ( z ) | ≥ e − C R 1 − 2 q log R , where C > 0 depends …

Milton’s conjecture on the regularity of solutions to isotropic equations

2003

Abstract We present examples showing that the threshold for the integrability of the gradient of solutions to isotropic equations is 2K/(K−1). The main tools are p-laminates and Beltrami Operators.

Manifolds of quasiconformal mappings and the nonlinear Beltrami equation

2014

In this paper we show that the homeomorphic solutions to each nonlinear Beltrami equation $\partial_{\bar{z}} f = \mathcal{H}(z, \partial_{z} f)$ generate a two-dimensional manifold of quasiconformal mappings $\mathcal{F}_{\mathcal{H}} \subset W^{1,2}_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb{C})$. Moreover, we show that under regularity assumptions on $\mathcal{H}$, the manifold $\mathcal{F}_{\mathcal{H}}$ defines the structure function $\mathcal{H}$ uniquely.

Markovian Connection, Curvature and Weitzenböck Formula on Riemannian Path Spaces

2001

Abstract We shall consider on a Riemannian path space P m o ( M ) the Cruzeiro–Malliavin's Markovian connection. The Laplace operator will be defined as the divergence of the gradient. We shall compute explicitly the associated curvature tensor. A Weitzenbock formula will be established. To this end, we shall introduce an “inner product” between the tangent processes and simple vector fields.
