A correction method for the analysis of continuous linear one-dimensional systems under moving loads
2008
A new correction procedure for dynamic analysis of linear, proportionally damped, continuous systems under traveling concentrated loads is proposed; both cases of non-parametric (moving forces) and parametric (moving mass) loads are considered. Improvement in the evaluation of the dynamic response is obtained by separating the contribution of the low-frequency (LF) modes from that of the high-frequency (HF) modes. The former is calculated, as usual, by classical modal analysis, while the latter is taken into account using a new series expansion of the corresponding particular solution. The advantage of the suggested method is immediately shown in the calculation of the stress distribution s…
<title>Spin-polarized electron kinetics under high-intensity picosecond excitation</title>
2003
ABSTRACT Spin-polarized electron kinetics is studied by time-resolved polarized photoemission with picosecond resolution. The re-sponse time of strained layer photocathodes is found to be in a range of a few picosecond offering an ultrafast response andhigh spin-polarization of emitted electrons. The studies of the sub-picosecond spin dynamics are facilitated in high-intensityexcitation regime when the length of the emission pulse is enlarged due to the dispersion of acceleration time and Coulombrepulsion ofthe electrons in their flight in the vacuum. Keywords: optical orientation, spin kinetics, strained semiconductor layer, time-resolved emission. 1. Bounds on transient phase plastic deformations in optimal design of steel frames subjected to cyclic loads
2009
A minimum volume multicriterion design of elastic perfectly plastic steel frames subjected to a combination of quasi-static fixed and cyclic loads, bounding the transient phase plastic deformations, is proposed. The problem is formulated according to a plastic shakedown criterion, so that incremental and instantaneous collapse are certainly prevented when the frame is subjected to very strongly amplified cyclic loads. The further condition that the structure must also behave elastically in serviceability conditions is imposed. Since the steady-state loading history is known it is possible to directly bound the steady-state plastic deformations. By applying a suitable own bounding theorem, i…
Shakedown optimal design of reinforced concrete structures by evolution strategies
2000
Approaches the shakedown optimal design of reinforced concrete (RC) structures, subjected to variable and repeated external quasi‐static actions which may generate the well‐known shakedown or adaptation phenomenon, when constraints are imposed on deflection and/or deformation parameters, in order to simulate the limited flexural ductility of the material, in the presence of combined axial stress and bending. Within this context, the classical shakedown optimal design problem is revisited, using a weak upper bound theorem on the effective plastic deformations. For this problem a new computational algorithm, termed evolution strategy, is herein presented. This algorithm, derived from analogy …
On the Post-Elastic Behavior of LRPH Connections
2019
The paper concerns the study of the post-elastic behavior of a recently proposed innovative device, named Limited Resistance Rigid Perfectly Plastic Hinge (LRPH). In particular, LRPH is a steel device of finite length realizing a moment connection between beam elements of a steel frame; it is designed in order to possess two main and independent requirements: its bending moment resistance must be suitably lower than the one of the connected beam element and its overall bending stiffness must be equal to that of the connected beam element characterized by the same length. In order to make the proposed device reliable, LRPH must be capable of realizing a full plastic hinge for the assigned be…
Fatigue of Mooring Chains Connected to Offshore Floating Structures Considering Out of Plane Bending Effects
2019
Abstract Reliability against fatigue fracture is an issue of major concern in the design of offshore mooring systems with chain segments. The present paper describes the investigation of the effect of OPB (out of plane bending) and IPB (in plane bending) loading modes on the fatigue performance of chain links in critical positions. The hang-off design at the floater is based on long rods with bearings at the connection points to the floating structure. The purpose of the paper is to shed some light on possible design improvements on the connection design when using the available design guidelines for calculation of combined Tension-Bending fatigue in the mooring line. A challenge when using…
Bending or buckling: Compression-induced phase transition in a semi-flexible polymer brush
2013
Molecular-dynamics simulations are presented for systems of densely grafted semiflexible macromolecules grafted to a planar non-adsorbing substrate, studying the case where the persistence length of the polymers is of the same order as their contour length so that the polymer brush may exhibit nematic order. We focus our attention on the case where the first bond must orient perpendicularly to the substrate (so the structure resembles a "Fakir's bed" for short chains and a "polymer bristle" for longer chains). When such layers are exposed to uniform compression, the pressure vs. distance relationship exhibits two stages: i) for very small compression the chains exhibit "buckling" yet mainta…
Universal monomer dynamics of a two dimensional semi-flexible chain
2013
We present a unified scaling theory for the dynamics of monomers for dilute solutions of semiflexible polymers under good solvent conditions in the free draining limit. Our theory encompasses the well-known regimes of mean square displacements (MSDs) of stiff chains growing like t^{3/4} with time due to bending motions, and the Rouse-like regime t^{2 \nu / (1+ 2\nu)} where \nu is the Flory exponent describing the radius R of a swollen flexible coil. We identify how the prefactors of these laws scale with the persistence length l_p, and show that a crossover from stiff to flexible behavior occurs at a MSD of order l^2_p (at a time proportional to l^3_p). A second crossover (to diffusive moti…
Grafted Rods: A Tilting Phase Transition
1996
A tilting phase transition is predicted for systems comprising rod like molecules which are irreversibly grafted to a flat surface, so that the non interacting rods are perpendicularly oriented. The transition is controlled by the grafting density $\rho$. It occurs as $\rho$ increases as a result of the interplay between two energies. Tilt is favoured by the van-der-Waals attraction between the rods. It is opposed by the bending elasticity of the grafting functionality. The role of temperature is discussed, and the tilting mechanism is compared to other tilting transitions reported in the literature.
Photoelastic Analysis of Edge Residual Stresses in Glass by Automated “Test Fringes” Methods
2011
Since the glass is a birefringent material, the analysis of residual stress in glass is usually carried out by means of photoelastic methods. This paper considers the automation of the “test fringes” method which is based on the use of a Babinet compensator or of a beam subjected to bending. In particular, two automated methods are proposed: the first one is based on the use of the centre fringe method in monochromatic light and the second one is based on the use of RGB photoelasticity in white light. The proposed methods have been applied to the analysis of membranal residual stresses in some tempered glasses, showing that they can effectively replace manual methods of photoelastic analysi…
