Costs-benfits trade-off in the intercation between Medicago truncatula and Pseudomonas fluorescens C7R12 across atmospheric carbon dioxide modulation

2011

The interactions between plants and soil microorganisms are mainly based on trophic relationships. The compounds exchanged represent cost for the organism produces them but a benefit for the one who receive those compounds. A mutualistic relation leads to stability in the cost-benefit balance resulting from a co-evolution between the two organisms. The cost corresponding for the release of carbon compounds by the plant would be offset by benefits in return corresponding for the activities of microorganisms that use them. We tested by an experimental way the effect of CO2 concentration on the interaction between M. truncatula and the bacterium P. fluorescens C7R12. The results allowed a best…

Soil as support of biodiversity and functions

2015

Chapitre 11 Section 3 EA SPE EcolDur GenoSol; The soil is a major reservoir of biological diversity on our planet. It also shelters numerous biological and ecological processes and therefore contributes to the production of a considerable number of ecosystem services. Among the ecological, social and economic services identified, the role of soil as a reservoir of diversity has now been well established, along with its role in nutrient cycling, supporting primary productivity, pollution removal and storing carbon. Since the development of industrialization, urbanization and agriculture, soils have been subjected to numerous variations in environmental conditions, which have resulted in modi…

Need adapted use of medication in the open dialogue approach for psychosis : a descriptive longitudinal cohort study

2022

Background The open dialogue (OD) approach includes the need-adapted use of psychiatric medication in treating first-episode psychosis (FEP), but there is limited information on how psychiatric medications are actually used in OD-based services. This study aims to analyse long-term medication dispensing patterns among FEP cohort treated according to the OD. Methods The OD cohort consisted of people who received treatment for FEP in the Finnish Western Lapland catchment area at a time of OD implementation (n=61). The comparison group included people whose FEP treatment commenced outside the catchment area during the mid-1990s (n=1378). Data were gathered from national registers from onset to…

2018

Masteroppgave samfunnskommunikasjon KOM500 - Universitetet i Agder 2018 PurposeThe aim of this qualitative study was to obtain a better overview over the perceptions towards benefit realization in small online education projects, in the specialist health care services.Design/Methodology/ApproachThe study was based on two case projects involving online patient education. In total, 6 in-depth interviews were conducted, with 2 project managers and 4 project participants. The response from these interviews were then coded and categorized using Grounded Theoryto describe the most essential themes.FindingsThe vast majority of the literature on benefit realization is based on projects with moderat…

Strategies to Improve the Potential Functionality of Fruit-Based Fermented Beverages

2021

It is only recently that fermentation has been facing a dynamic revival in the food industry. Fermented fruit-based beverages are among the most ancient products consumed worldwide, while in recent years special research attention has been granted to assess their functionality. This review highlights the functional potential of alcoholic and non-alcoholic fermented fruit beverages in terms of chemical and nutritional profiles that impact on human health, considering the natural occurrence and enrichment of fermented fruit-based beverages in phenolic compounds, vitamins and minerals, and pro/prebiotics. The health benefits of fruit-based beverages that resulted from lactic, acetic, alcoholic…

An inter-laboratory comparison to evaluate the suitability of EN 1787 standard to detect irradiation in plant-origin foods with health benefits

2020

Abstract This paper reports the results of a study carried out to verify the applicability of the EN 1787 method, which uses the Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) technique for the identification of irradiated plant-origin foods with health benefits. The method was tested on samples of herbal ingredients of Plant Food Supplements (PFSs), nuts and fresh blueberries. Untreated and irradiated samples of Camellia sinensis (leaves) Ginkgo biloba (leaves), Glycine max (seeds), Silybum marianum (fruits), Vaccinium myrtillus (fruits), almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, pistachios, walnuts and fresh blueberries were analysed. The work includes an inter-laboratory blind test involving five Italian laboratories…

Economic assessment of sicilian loquat orchards

2015

The majority of Italian production of loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) derives from the Palermo province, along the northern Sicilian coast. However, this area is characterized by family orchards, traditional cultural techniques, and inadequate commercial organization. These appear to affect negatively the production costs and reduce the farmers’ income, decreasing the competitiveness of Sicilian loquat orchards. This study evaluates the economic viability of Sicilian loquat orchards by means of cost-benefit analysis (CBA). In particular, for the investment assessment some financial indicators have been calculated such as net present value (NPV), discounted payback time (DPBT), and internal r…

Algae biomass: characteristics and applications. Towards algae-based products

2018

This book is a compendium of knowledge on the useful properties of algae in the context of application as a useful component of innovative natural products. It presents all aspects of industrial applications of macroalgae biomass derived from the natural environment. Despite many interesting characteristics, algae are still regarded as undervalued raw material, therefore, present in the following chapters are not only environmental benefits arising from the development of excessive algal biomass, but also the distribution and biology of algae in natural conditions in reservoirs, methods of obtaining extracts from biomass of algae for industrial purposes. Furthermore, it also includes topics…
