Formalized classification of ephemeral wetland vegetation (Isoëto-Nanojuncetea class) in Poland (Central Europe)
2021
Formalized classification of the class Isoëto-Nanojuncetea has not been performed in Poland. We used 69,562 relevés stored in Polish Vegetation Database. Based on the literature and expert knowledge we selected 63 diagnostic species for the Isoëto-Nanojuncetea class. Unequivocal classification was applied in this work according to Cocktail method. A set of formal definitions was established using a combination of logical operators of total cover of species in case of high-rank syntaxa while sociological species groups and cover of particular species were used for logical formulas describing class, alliances and associations. An Expert System was prepared and applied to classify the whole da…
ALANINE/EPR DOSIMETRY APPLIED TO THE VALIDATION OF A TOTAL BODY IRRADIATION (TBI) PROTOCOL AND TREATMENT PLANNING DOSE CALCULATION USING A HUMANOID P…
2015
EPR DOSIMETRY WITH ALANINE FOR TOTAL BODY IRRADIATION USING AN ANTHROPOMORPHIC PHANTOM
2016
The Total Body Irradiation (TBI) is a radiation therapy technique widely used in clinical hemato-oncological treatment of patients that underwent bone marrow transplantation or peripheral stem cell transplantation. Typically, the administration of TBI treatment provides irradiations in 3 consecu-tive days with a double daily fractionation, although other dose fractionation modes have been widely adopted in the clinic procedures. Although this tech-nique allows to irradiate the whole body from head to toes, it has some limitations such as the lack of homogeneity of the dose distribution (which can show varia-tions of 20% in the different areas), irradiation of critical organs such as lungs, …
Functional connectivity modulation induced by transcranial direct current stimulation of the motor network investigated by resting state fMRI
2015
This study is aimed at measuring the variation of functional connectivity between cortical brain regions after tDCS along time. For this purpose we enrolled 20 healthy right-handed subjects.
THz spectroscopy study of amyloid fibrils
2013
In suitable conditions proteins can modify their native conformation and associate to form aggregates with different morphologies in dependence on the external physico-chemical conditions. This phenomenon, one of the most challenging in life sciences, is associated with widely diffused pathologies such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Creutzfeldt-Jacob’s diseases. Of particular relevance are ordered elongated aggregates with highly organized patterns of hydrogen-bonds, known as amyloid fibrils. While much biological and structural information are available about amyloids, and in spite of the fundamental paradigm of structure-dynamics-function relation in proteins, much less is known about th…
Historical buildings: luminescence dating of fine grains from bricks and mortar
2010
In the framework of a research program aimed to define the chronology of the structures of the architectonic complex of San Francesco alla Collina (Paternò, Italy), two luminescence dating techniques were applied: Thermoluminescence (TL) on terracotta bricks and Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) on mortars. Dating a historic building through the age of its bricks can be sometimes complex, for the possible gap between the age of the bricks themselves and that of the structure. Considering that the laying of mortar is contemporary to the construction, the principal objective of the work here presented is the verification of the possibility of solving chronological uncertainties of speci…
Grafting of (3-chloropropyl)-trimethoxy silane on halloysite nanotubes surface
2021
Modified halloysite nanotubes (HNTs-Cl) were synthesized by a coupling reaction with (3-chloropropyl) trimethoxysilane (CPTMS). The incorporation of chloro-silane onto HNTs surface creates HNTs-Cl, which has great chemical activity and is considered a good candidate as an active site that reacts with other active molecules in order to create new materials with great applications in chemical engineering and nanotechnology. The value of this work lies in the fact that improving the degree of grafting of chloro-silane onto the HNT’s surface has been accomplished by incorporation of HNTs with CPTMS under different experimental conditions. Many parameters, such as the dispersing media, the molar…
Oxadiazolyl-Pyridinium as Cationic Scaffold for Fluorinated Ionic Liquid Crystals
2021
The synthesis and characterization of a new class of 1,2,4-oxadiazolylpyridinium as a cationic scaffold for fluorinated ionic liquid crystals is herein described. A series of 12 fluorinated heterocyclic salts based on a 1,2,4-oxadiazole moiety, connected through its C(5) or C(3) to an N-alkylpyridinium unit and a perfluoroheptyl chain, differing in the length of the alkyl chain and counterions, has been synthesized. As counterions iodide, bromide and bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide have been considered. The synthesis, structure, and liquid crystalline properties of these compounds are discussed on the basis of the tuned structural variables. The thermotropic properties of this series of sa…
