Analysis of the Structure and Dynamics of European Flight Networks

2022

We analyze structure and dynamics of flight networks of 50 airlines active in the European airspace in 2017. Our analysis shows that the concentration of the degree of nodes of different flight networks of airlines is markedly heterogeneous among airlines reflecting heterogeneity of the airline business models. We obtain an unsupervised classification of airlines by performing a hierarchical clustering that uses a correlation coefficient computed between the average occurrence profiles of 4-motifs of airline networks as similarity measure. The hierarchical tree is highly informative with respect to properties of the different airlines (for example, the number of main hubs, airline participa…

Characterization of alanine EPR detectors response in clinical carbon ion beams

2012

Heavy-ions beams offer several advantages compared to other radiation such as low lateral scattering and high biological effectiveness (RBE) in the Bragg peak region, making them particularly attractive for the treatment of radio-resistant tumors localized close to organs at risk [1]. Although ion beam radiotherapy ultimately requires dose prescription in terms of biological dose or cell survival, absorbed dose is still the quantity mostly used in clinical quality assurance and to dosimetrically characterize the beam. Moreover, the nuclear projectile fragmentation of heavy ions because of inelastic nuclear interactions with medium produces secondary particles with lower Z. The detailed know…

Insulin-nanogels: preliminary study in mouse for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease

2016

A growing body of evidence shows that Insulin, Insulin Receptor (IR) and IR signalling are involved in brain cognitive functions and their dysfunction is implicated in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Thus, administration of insulin could be a strategy for AD treatment. For this aim we have designed, synthesized and characterized a nanogel system (NG) that has been conjugated to insulin molecules (NG-In) (1) as new therapeutic approach against AD. In our preclinical studies in mice, intraperitoneal injection of fluorescent-labeled NG has allowed to determine the biodistribution of NG vs time in the whole body and its clearance through the kidneys and bladder. Furthermore, we have observed that mic…

Protein-membrane interaction: insights from advanced microscopy

2017

The interaction between proteins and membranes is sub ject of renewed interest in biomedical and biotechnologi cal research for its implication in many functional and dys functional processes and for its pharmaceutical applications. It has been shown that the interaction between amyloido genic proteins and membranes results in mutually destruc tive structural perturbations. The study we present is focused on the interaction between synthetic model membranes and alpha-lactalbumin (α-La), widely studied for its biolog ical function since it can induce apoptosis in tumor cells. Upon α-La addition to giant vesicles (GVs) samples, the sys tem has been characterized by means of spectroscopy meth …

Qualitative screening of 116 veterinary drugs in feed by liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry: potential application to quantitati…

2014

Abstract Veterinarian and human pharmaceuticals may be intentionally added to animal feed to enhance animal production. Monitoring these substances is necessary for protecting the consumers. In this work, a screening method covering 116 human and veterinary drugs has been developed and validated in five types of animal feed at 0.02 and 0.2 mg kg−1. After a simple extraction and dilution, the samples were analysed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF MS). Nearly all compounds tested were detected at 0.02 mg kg−1, based on the presence of the accurate-mass (de)protonated molecule. However, the identification using a…

Effect of cholesterol on the interaction between amphyphylic peptides and liposomes

With the rise of antibiotic resistance, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have been proposed as an alternative novel class of therapeutic agents. They are polycationic, with a net positive charge of more than +2, and they are characterized by amphipathic structures, with both a hydrophobic and a hydrophilic domain. These characteristics allow them to selectively bind to negatively charged lipids (largely present in bacteria, not in mammalian cells), via hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions. Moreover, mammalian cells are characterized by a high content of cholesterol. For this reason, here we present an experimental study on the effect of the presence of cholesterol on the capability of am…
