Effect of Production Phase on Bottle-Fermented Sparkling Wine Quality

2015

This review analyzes bottle-fermented sparkling wine research at each stage of production by evaluating existing knowledge to identify areas that require future investigation. With the growing importance of enological investigation being focused on the needs of the wine production industry, this review examines current research at each stage of bottle-fermented sparkling wine production. Production phases analyzed in this review include pressing, juice adjustments, malolactic fermentation (MLF), stabilization, clarification, tirage, lees aging, disgorging, and dosage. The aim of this review is to identify enological factors that affect bottle-fermented sparkling wine quality, predominantly …

Shot-clay MX-80 bentonite: An assessment of the hydro-mechanical behaviour

2014

This study presents the results of an experimental study conducted to characterise the hydro-mechanical behaviour of shot-clay MX-80 bentonite. In the shot-clay process, granular bentonite was mixed continuously with water and shot on the walls of a tunnel section at the Grimsel Underground Research Laboratory (URL), in Switzerland. The shot-clay was placed to create a layer of bentonite in direct contact with the host rock to avoid preferential water and/or gas flow along the tunnel wall. Samples for an experimental programme were collected during the shooting. The index properties, microstructural features, swelling potential and water retention properties of the shot-clay were analysed. …

Bentonite-ionic liquid composites for Congo red removal from aqueous solutions

2021

Abstract Clay-organic composites have attracted great interest due to their ability to remove various contaminants from wastewater. The surfactants are the most commonly used organic compounds for clay modification. However, cationic surfactants are toxic and can be environmentally hazardous. Ionic liquids are a new promising alternative to the cationic surfactants due to lesser toxicity and appropriate thermal stability. The research aim is to prepare an environmentally friendly new class of clay sorbents modified with ionic liquids for potential applications in wastewater treatment from the textile industry. Imidazolium-based ionic liquids with different lengths of alkyl chains were inter…

Flow and thixotropy of non-contaminating oil drilling fluids formulated with bentonite and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose

2007

Abstract A study has been made of low-contaminating oil drilling mud in water base, composed of bentonite, at concentrations in the range of 6–12% (w/w), and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose at two different concentrations. Flow analysis yielded an empirical formula indicating shear stress as a function of the formulation concentrations of bentonite and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, stirring time and shear rate. To study the thixotropy of the different formulations the cycles' method has been used. Calculations were made of the thixotropic areas, obtaining a semi-empirical equation for these areas. The results are analyzed on the base of relative thixotropic area and total relative thixotro…

Hydro-mechanical behaviour of shot-clay bentonite

2015

The shot-clay was placed to create a layer of bentonite in direct contact with the host rock to avoid preferential water and/or gas flow along the tunnel wall. Results from an experiment, conducted under controlled total suction to analyse the hydro-mechanical behaviour of the material, are shown.

Influence of bentonite fining on protein composition in wine

2017

Abstract Bentonite is the only fining agent which can stabilize wine and prevent protein haze formation after bottling. Currently many approaches are used to find an alternative because of bentonite's negative influence on color and aroma compounds. Nevertheless, the interaction of bentonite with wine proteins is not fully understood. Therefore, we analyzed the influence of a NaCa-combined bentonite on the protein content and composition of different wines showing a partial selectivity on protein adsorption. For example, glycosylated proteins were not removed by bentonite in notable amounts. Performing mass spectrometry we were able to demonstrate that 96% of class IV chitinase was adsorbed…

Control of Bactrocera oleae and Ceratitis capitata in Organic Orchards: Use of Clays and Copper Products.

2010

Tests on the effect of clays (kaolin and bentonite) and copper products (hydroxide and oxychloride) in the control of olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae (Rossi), and Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), were carried out from 2003 to 2006 in olive groves and in organic citrus orchards (satsuma, clementine, ‘Navelina’ orange). Results demonstrate an efficacy of kaolin products in reducing attacks of B. oleae on olives and those of C. capitata on citrus fruits; in olive groves the clays gave similar or better results than copper hydroxide. Bentonite AG/8W showed a significant reduction in punctures by C. capitata. Bentonite products and BPLK kaolin are washed off by rainfall…
