Computational determination of the dominant triplet population mechanism in photoexcited benzophenone
2014
In benzophenone, intersystem crossing occurs efficiently between the S-1(n pi(star)) state and the T-1 state of dominant n pi(star) character, leading to excited triplet states after photoexcitation. The transition mechanism between S-1(n pi(star)) and T-1 is still a matter of debate, despite several experimental studies. Quantum mechanical calculations have been performed in order to assess the relative efficiencies of previously proposed mechanisms, in particular, the direct S-1 -> T-1 and indirect S-1 -> T-2(pi pi(star)) -> T-1 ones. Multiconfigurational wave function based methods are used to discuss the nature of the relevant states and also to determine minimum energy paths a…
Fragmentation Pathways of Polycyclic Polyisoprenylated Benzophenones and Degradation Profile of Nemorosone by Multiple-Stage Tandem Mass Spectrometry
2009
Nemorosone is a polycyclic polyisoprenylated benzophenone (PPBs) with strong cytotoxic activity. It is the major constituent of Clusia rosea floral resin and brown Cuban propolis. Other PPBs found in Cuban propolis are oxidized and cyclized derivatives of nemorosone. The instability of PPBs carrying an enolizable 1,3-diketone system has been suggested, and the elucidation of this aspect is very fundamental for the evaluation of their biologic activity. Electrospray ionization multistage tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MSn) was employed to shed light on the origin of these derivatives of nemorosone and to define the stability of this natural product. For this purpose, we initially performed MS…
Cytotoxicity and modes of action of four naturally occuring benzophenones: 2,2′,5,6′-Tetrahydroxybenzophenone, guttiferone E, isogarcinol and isoxant…
2012
Abstract Introduction The emergence of drug-resistant cancer cells drastically reduces the efficacy of many antineoplasic agents and, consequently, increases the frequency of therapeutic failure. Benzophenones are known to display many pharmacological properties including cytotoxic activities. The present study was aimed at investigating the cytotoxicity and the modes of action of four naturally occurring benzophenones 2,2′,5,6′-tetrahydroxybenzophenone ( 1 ), isogarcinol ( 2 ), isoxanthochymol ( 3 ) and guttiferone E ( 4 ) on a panel of eleven cancer cell lines including various sensitive and drug-resistant phenotypes. Methods The cytotoxicity of the compounds was determined using a resazu…
Mono- and di-nuclear 2,3-diazabutadiene and 2-azabutadiene complexes of Rhenium(I): Syntheses, luminescence spectra and X-ray structures
2008
Abstract Treatment of [Re(CO)3(THF)(μ-Br)]2 with 4,4-dichloro-1,1-diphenyl-2-azabuta-1,3-diene [Cl2C C(H)–N CPh2] (1a) yields the di-nuclear benzophenone azine-bridged compound [(OC)3Re(μ-Ph2C N–N CPh2)(μ-Br)2Re(CO)3] (2a), albeit in low yield. Alternatively, compounds [(OC)3Re(μ-Ph2C N–N CPh2)(μ-X)2Re(CO)3] (2a,b) (X = Br, Cl) are obtained in high yields by direct reaction of [Re(CO)3(THF)(μ-Br)]2 or [Re(CO)5Cl] with benzophenone azine. Nucleophilic attack of NaSPh on 1a affords the 2-azabutadiene derivative [(PhS)(Cl)C C(H)–N CPh2] (1b), which upon reaction with [Re(CO)3(THF)(μ-Br)]2 forms the S,N-chelate complex fac-[(OC)3ReBr{(PhS)(Cl)C C(H)–N CPh2}] (3). The crystal structures of 1b, 2…
Insertion Reactions of Neutral Phosphidozirconocene Complexes as a Convenient Entry into Frustrated Lewis Pair Territory
2016
International audience; Neutral phosphidozirconocene complexes [Cp2Zr(PR2)Me] (Cp=cyclopentadienyl; 1a: R=cyclohexyl (Cy); 1b: R=mesityl (Mes); 1c: R=tBu) undergo insertion into the Zr-P bond by non-enolisable carbonyl building blocks (O=CRR), such as benzophenone, aldehydes, paraformaldehyde or CO2, to give [Cp2Zr(OCRRPR2)Me] (3-7). Depending on the steric bulk around P, complexes 3-7 react with B(C6F5)(3) to give O-bridged cationic zirconocene dimers that display typical frustrated Lewis pair (FLP)/ambiphilic ligand behaviour. Thus, the reaction of {[Cp2Zr(-OCHPhPCy2)][MeB(C6F5)(3)]}(2) (10a) with chalcone results in 1,4 addition of the Zr+/P FLP, whereas the reaction of {[Cp2Zr(-OCHFcPCy…
An Easy Stereoselective Access to β,γ-Aziridino α-Amino Ester Derivatives via Mannich Reaction of Benzophenone Imines of Glycine Esters with N-Sulfon…
2007
Mannich-type addition of benzophenone imine glycinates across newly synthesized N-(p-toluenesulfonyl) alpha-chloroaldimines afforded gamma-chloro-alpha,beta-diamino ester derivatives with moderate diastereoselectivity as separable mixtures of anti and syn diastereomers. The gamma-chloro-alpha,beta-diamino esters were efficiently cyclized under basic conditions to the corresponding beta,gamma-aziridino alpha-amino ester derivatives, representing a new class of conformationally constrained heterocyclic alpha,beta-diamino acid derivatives. The relative configuration of the aziridines was determined via X-ray diffraction analysis. Mechanisms and intermediate transition states to explain the ste…
DFT study on the cycloreversion of thietane radical cations.
2011
The molecular mechanism of the cycloreversion (CR) of thietane radical cations has been analyzed in detail at the UB3LYP/6-31G* level of theory. Results have shown that the process takes place via a stepwise mechanism leading to alkenes and thiobenzophenone; alternatively, formal [4 + 2] cycloadducts are obtained. Thus, the CR of radical cations 1a, b(center dot+) is initiated by C2-C3 bond breaking, giving common intermediates INa,b. At this stage, two reaction pathways are feasible involving ion molecule complexes IMCa,b (i) or radical cations 4a,b(center dot+) (ii). Calculations support that 1a(center dot+) follows reaction pathway (leading to the formal [4 + 2] cycloadducts 5a). By cont…
Controlled UV-C light-induced fusion of thiol-passivated gold nanoparticles.
2011
Thiol-passivated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) of a relatively small size, either decorated with chromophoric groups, such as a phthalimide (Au@PH) and benzophenone (Au@BP), or capped with octadecanethiol (Au@ODCN) have been synthesized and characterized by NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy as well as transmission electron microscopy (TEM). These NPs were irradiated in chloroform at different UV-wavelengths using either a nanosecond laser (266 and 355 nm, ca. 12 mJ/pulse, 10 ns pulse) or conventional lamps (300 nmλ400 nm and ca. 240 nmλ280 nm) and the new AuNPs were characterized by X-ray and UV-vis spectroscopy, as well as by TEM. Laser irradiation at 355 nm led to NP aggregation and precipitation,…
(Photo)crosslinkable Smectic LC Main-Chain Polymers
2007
This paper presents the synthetic route to SmA LC main-chain polymers, that can be (photo)-crosslinked without solvent in the bulk phase. They are based on soluble polymalonates, in which higher ordered phases can be suppressed by copolymerization with a laterally brominated biphenyl. Two routes were developed to incorporate the crosslinkable groups into the polyester backbone. The first consists in the incorporation of phenols into the polyester. These phenols are not reactive enough to participate in the transesterification reaction used to build up the polymer, but they can be esterified afterwards with acrylates. Thermally or photochemically created radicals then start the crosslinking.…
N-(2-Benzoyl-4-chlorophenyl)-4-chlorobenzenesulfonamide
2008
The title compound, C19H13Cl2NO3S, is an N-arylsulfonyl derivative of 2-amino-5-chlorobenzophenone. The compound is biologically active and shows potential to be utilized as an inhibitor of CCR2 and CCR9 receptor functions. In the crystal structure, there is an intramolecular N—H...O hydrogen bond between the amide and carbonyl groups. The benzoyl and 4-chlorophenyl groups form intramolecular and intermolecular face-to-face contacts, with a dihedral angle of 10.6 (1)° between their mean planes in both cases, and centroid–centroid separations of 4.00 (1) and 4.25 (1) Å for the intra- and intermolecular interactions, respectively.
