‘Our words are stronger’ : re-enforcing boundaries through ritual work in a terrorist news event

2020

This article investigates the ritual work in terrorist news events, using the Berlin truck attack as a case in point. The article connects with the larger cluster of anthropologically inspired communication research on media events as public rituals in news media and applies digital media ethnography as its method. Fieldwork is conducted in 15 online news sites. The article identifies three key phases through which the ritual work was carried out: the rupture in the news event (ritualised as the strike), the liminal phase (ritualised as the manhunt) and the reconstitution of order following the attack (ritualised as the mourning). The article concludes with an interpretation of the broader …

Sixfold coordinated phosphorus by oxygen in AlPO4 quartz homeotype under high pressure.

2007

International audience; AlPO4 belongs to the berlinite quartz homeotype family, which has been the subject of intense high pressure research triggered by the supposed existence of reversible pressure induced amorphization. New x-ray diffraction experiments, complemented with ab initio calculations, demonstrate the existence of two high pressure crystalline polymorphs and show that AlPO4 share the same two stage densification mechanism as silica. In first place a compact hexagonal sublattice of oxygen atoms is formed. In a second step the cations redistribute in the interstices giving rise to a monoclinic distorted CaCl2 phase. The most outstanding feature of the new phase is that phosphorou…

La letteratura italiana racconta la caduta del muro di Berlino

2020

The fall of the wall is an event that sets a date and raises a symbolic watershed that separates the before from the after. The essay analyzes the Italian literary texts that were directly confronted with the events of 1989 by reviewing a period of time that goes from the day after the fall of the wall to the present day. From Fortini to Volponi, from Giudici to Arbasino, up to Lagioia, Affinati and Camilleri: for these writers talking about the Berlin Wall means reflecting on the crisis of ideologies, on the contradictions of history, on the relationship between literature and reality.

Resolved versus confirmed ARDS after 24 h: insights from the LUNG SAFE study

2018

Purpose: To evaluate patients with resolved versus confirmed ARDS, identify subgroups with substantial mortality risk, and to determine the utility of day 2 ARDS reclassification. Methods: Our primary objective, in this secondary LUNG SAFE analysis, was to compare outcome in patients with resolved versus confirmed ARDS after 24 h. Secondary objectives included identifying factors associated with ARDS persistence and mortality, and the utility of day 2 ARDS reclassification. Results: Of 2377 patients fulfilling the ARDS definition on the first day of ARDS (day 1) and receiving invasive mechanical ventilation, 503 (24%) no longer fulfilled the ARDS definition the next day, 52% of whom initial…

Hepatitis B virus and delta infection in male homosexuals

2008

— Six hundred and sixty-six homosexuals were analysed in respect of hepatitis B virus and delta infections. Evidence of ongoing or recent hepatitis B virus infection was found in 450/666 (67.6%) homosexuals; 44 were HBsAg positive. Anti-delta was found in two HBsAg-positive homosexuals. Both individuals had a non-replicative form of HBV infection and biochemical evidence of liver disease. The study confirms that HBV infection is frequent in homosexuals and indicates that delta-infection is rare in male homosexuals.
