This chapter considers Bernardi’s contribution to two different processes of traditional institutions revival in East Africa. He was the main ethnographer of the Mugwe, a traditional dignitary of the Meru of Kenya, that ceased to exist soon after his field work. He used the attribution ‘failing prophet’ in the title of the first edition of his book, changed into ‘blessing prophet’ in the following edition, having in the meanwhile registered a growing symbolic consideration for the institution. The author finds in Derrida's reflection on unconditional hospitality a deep bond with the duplication of reason in Kant. The unconditional hospitality appear also at the base of the painting Annunciazione by Alberto Savinio that the author reads trough Derrida's reflection. Reason and art appear to be governed by the same need of the reason.

Using now the cultural models, now those of organizational and structural theories, the Cosa Nostra studies risk sometimes to achieve results spoiled by approximation and partiality. L’eco mediatica che ha accompagnato la recente cattura di Bernardo Provenzano, induce ad un’attenta riflessione sull’effettivo ruolo svolto dal capo mafia corleonese all’interno dell’organizzazione criminale e nel nostro immaginario. Ma richiede anche un ripensamento sul significato attribuito alla parola mafia, spesso utilizzata in forme estensive e a-specifiche che ne amplificano o sottovalutano la reale portata, rendendo approssimativi e sfuggenti l’analisi e gli interventi. Da qui i rischi, quanto mai attuali, di forme di mitizzazione, fondate su letture apologetiche, su ottiche difensive, su strumentali omissioni.
