The Rotary Aero Engine from 1908 to 1918

2012

The rotary aero engine is a special type of air-cooled radial engine, where the cylinders are arranged like the spokes of a wheel and turn around the crankshaft. The propeller is connected to the cylinders, while the crankshaft is fixed to the frame. The rotary aero engine, developed in 1908, set new standards of power and light weight within the aircraft industry. It was adopted by many pioneer aviators and widely used to set records of endurance, speed and height. Many aero engine manufacturers produced different models and variants of this type of engine, which was extensively used until the end of the First World War. The latest evolution of the rotary engine was the counter-rotary arra…

Detector for monitoring potential bleeding during electron intraoperative radiotherapy

2018

Purpose: The aim of this work is to develop a bleeding detector integrated into the acrylic circular applicators for specific mobile linacs. Thus, a bleeding detector has been developed based on a capacitive sensor to be used with plastic applicators, as in the case of LIAC HWL from Sordina IORT Technologies SpA. According to the clinical impact, we have selected 0.5 cm as the minimum depth of fluid that should be detected. Methods: An experiment was developed using water-simulating blood. Two setups were considered: non-beveled applicators with 7 cm and 10 cm diameter. Measurements were done for applicators 0 degrees and 45 degrees tilted, both with respect to the horizontal surface, in or…

Effect of cavity preparation instruments (oscillating or rotating) on the composite-dentin interface in primary teeth.

2003

Abstract Objectives: To evaluate the effect of preparation of instruments on the interfacial integrity between cavity wall and composite restoration. Methods: Two class II slot preparations were done in 10 primary teeth either with SonicSys® or with a conventional bur. The cavities were filled using an adhesive system. One layer of a flowable composite and one layer of a condensable composite were applied. The specimens were analyzed by confocal laser scanning microscopy. Results: In the SonicSys® group the mean thickness of the hybrid layer was 6.12 (0.60) μm; in the control group it was 6.04 (0.63) μm. The difference was not statistically significant. Two fractures were observed in one to…

Influence of oblique edge blanking on the online punching quality after stretch bending

2018

The oblique edge punching was proposed to reduce the surrounding sag failure occurred under the large punching force during online punching after stretch bending. The finite element models under three different kinds of punches were stablished and the punching processes were simulated by using the DEFORM-3D software. Comparison between the flat-edge punch and the oblique edge punches were realized, and the optimal height of the oblique edge of the unilateral bevelled punch and the single-peak bevelled punch were obtained. Three kinds of punches were designed based on the simulation results, and the experiments for manufacturing the upper strip of the automobile door frame by the online punc…

Vulnerability of different nerves to intrafascicular injection by different needle types and at different approach angles: a mathematical model

2019

Background and objectivesWe assume that intrafascicular spread of a solution can only occur if a large enough portion of the distal needle orifice is placed inside the fascicle. Our aim is to present and evaluate a mathematical model that can calculate the theoretical vulnerability of fascicles, analyzing the degree of occupancy of the needle orifice in fascicular tissue by performing simulations of multiple positions that a needle orifice can take inside a cross-sectional nerve area.MethodsWe superimposed microscopic images of two routinely used nerve block needles (22-gauge, 15° needle and 22-gauge, 30° needle) over the microscopic images of cross-sections of four nerve types photographed…

Hereditary gingival fibromatosis: Characteristics and treatment approach

2017

Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) is a rare disorder characterized by a benign, non-hemorrhagic, fibrous gingival overgrowth that can appear in isolation or as part of a syndrome. Clinically, a pink gingiva with marked stippling can be seen to cover almost all the tooth, in many cases preventing eruption. HGF usually begins during the transition from primary to permanent teeth, giving rise to a condition that can have negative psychological effects at that age. As it does not resolve spontaneously, the treatment of choice is gingivectomy, which can be performed with an internal or external bevel incision, depending on each case and bearing in mind the changes that will take place at th…

ESRA19-0618 Vulnerability of different nerves to intrafascicular injection with different needle bevel types and needle angles: a mathematical model

2019

Background and aims Intrafascicular injection of a local anesthetic, its toxicity, and direct needle trauma to nerve tissue are generally considered the primary reasons for nerve injury after intraneural injection. We hypothesize that the only way that the local anesthetic can enter the fascicle is if at least 80% of the distal needle orifice is inside the fascicle. the aim of this study was to calculate the theoretical vulnerability of nerve fascicles given their actual sizes and that of different needle openings. Methods We superimposed microscopic images of two routinely used nerve block needles (a 22-G, 15 ‘StimuplexOD’ needleand a 22-G, 30 ‘StimuplexOUltra 360O’ needle) over microscopi…

Study and Simulation of Helicopter Gearboxes Noise

2010

International audience; Main gearbox is one of the main noise sources in helicopter cabin. In order to improve the comfort of customers and reduce the health impact, acoustic and vibration mechanisms of gearboxes have to be understood and simulated during development phases. Thus, we first present the global methodology chosen to compute main gearboxes noise in helicopter cabins. Secondly, we described the way we compute mechanical excitation sources induced from gear mesh, static transmission error and meshing stiffness. Depending on the type of gear, we compute those using either analytical specially developed code or EC codes. Thirdly, we propose a modeling to compute dynamic loads on be…
