Debating Europe: Effects of the “Eurovision Debate” on EU Attitudes of Young German Voters and the Moderating Role Played by Political Involvement

In the run-up to the elections to the European Parliament in 2014, EU citizens had the unprecedented opportunity to watch televised debates between the candidates running for president of the European Commission. The most important debate was the so-called "Eurovision debate", which was broadcasted in almost all EU member states. In this study we explore the responses of a sample of 110 young German voters, who watched this debate, to the candidates' messages and whether exposure to the debate caused a shift in the respondents' attitudes towards the EU. In times of educational expansion, privileged families are looking for new strategies of distinction. Referring to Pierre Bourdieu���s theory of distinction, we argue that choosing Latin at school ��� a language that is no longer spoken and therefore has no direct value ��� is one of the strategies of privileged families to set themselves apart from less privileged families. Based on two surveys we conducted at German schools, the paper analyzes the relationship between parents��� educational background and the probability that their child will learn Latin. Otto Blüh and Ernst Mach’s Legacy: Inheritance and Task

Otto Bluh (1902–1981) was a professor of physics who maintained a lifelong interest in Mach and contributed actively to previous commemorations. Dozent and first assistant at the German University of Prague, he was forced into exile as a result of the German occupation and held research and academic positions in Birmingham (UK), and the universities of British Columbia (Canada) and Vanderbilt (USA). Bluh not only was a pioneer in recognizing the relevance that physics teaching had in Mach’s ideas but developed many of them, highlighting critical thinking, the importance of history and philosophy in physics, bridging specialization and bringing humanism back to science. On the Relationship Between “Education” and “Critical Thinking”

In view of recent international efforts to identify and measure the ability “critical thinking,” this paper attempts to trace and reconstruct the core meaning of this concept in the light of its conceptual history in the German terminology of educational philosophy and research. In doing so, it becomes evident that it is necessary to clarify the relationship between “critical thinking” and “education,” both understood as terms designating a mental state. Abstract The authors of this section's article are of the opinion that the ‘pure’ philosophers in Scandinavia do not usually consider philosophy of education to be a philosophical discipline in line with other ‘hyphenated’ philosophies.
