Clinical and molecular diagnosis, screening and management of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome: An international consensus statement

Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS), a human genomic imprinting disorder, is characterized by phenotypic variability that might include overgrowth, macroglossia, abdominal wall defects, neonatal hypoglycaemia, lateralized overgrowth and predisposition to embryonal tumours. Delineation of the molecular defects within the imprinted 11p15.5 region can predict familial recurrence risks and the risk (and type) of embryonal tumour. Despite recent advances in knowledge, there is marked heterogeneity in clinical diagnostic criteria and care. Abstract This paper considers Mendelssohn’s attempt at a definition of Enlightenment in terms of Bildung, comprising the theoretical element of the enlightenment of reason with the practical requirements of culture. To avoid a possible dialectics of enlightenment, where the very methods one uses to enlighten harbour the seeds of new blindness, Mendelssohn advocates considering the lively connections between people, the role of traditions and personal relations in the formation of an individual self, and the connections we should have to our past, present, and future. Thus, his essay from 1784 can be read as an apt defence of a dialogical notion of freedom within the Enlightenment era.
Transformative Learning, Bildung and Biographical Research

The objective of this chapter, as the title states, is to relate transformative learning and Bildung within the context of biographical research. If processes of Bildung are defined as changes of attitude towards the world and the self, which is a consensus of Bildungs-oriented biographical research in Germany, and if one agrees furthermore that transformative learning and Bildung go together with fundamental changes of the self or the identity, it is rather surprising to note that both discourses have hardly ever been related.

E' un'idea largamente diffusa che la Grande Vienna sia stato uno dei cruciali laboratori del Novecento.Questo studio della Vienna tra fine Ottocento e avvento nazista, che mette assieme la storia, la storia della musica e la musicologia, la storia della cultura e quella sociale, lo riafferma. Ma lo riconsidera, guardandolo dalla prospettiva di una esperienza particolare. Si tratta del grandioso tentativo, da parte della socialdemocrazia e dei teorici dell'austromarxismo di fare del proletariato l'erede della tradizione musicale viennese, e attraverso questo, erede della cultura classica tedesca.
